Book Synopsis Pious Imperialism by : Cornelius Conover
Download or read book Pious Imperialism written by Cornelius Conover and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes Spanish rule and Catholic practice from the consolidation of Spanish control in the Americas in the sixteenth century to the loss of these colonies in the nineteenth century by following the life and afterlife of an accidental martyr, San Felipe de Jésus. Using Mexico City–native San Felipe as the central figure, Conover tracks the global aspirations of imperial Spain in places such as Japan and Rome without losing sight of the local forces affecting Catholicism. He demonstrates the ways Spanish religious attitudes motivated territorial expansion and transformed Catholic worship. Using Mexico City as an example, Conover also shows that the cult of saints continually refreshed the spiritual authority of the Spanish monarch and the message of loyalty of colonial peoples to a devout king. Such a political message in worship, Conover concludes, proved contentious in independent Mexico, thus setting the stage for the momentous conflicts of the nineteenth century in Latin American religious history.
Book Synopsis Organización, identidad e imagen de las colectividades vascas de la emigración (siglos XVI-XXI) by : Óscar Álvarez Gila
Download or read book Organización, identidad e imagen de las colectividades vascas de la emigración (siglos XVI-XXI) written by Óscar Álvarez Gila and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Holy Organ or Unholy Idol? by : Lauren G. Kilroy-Ewbank
Download or read book Holy Organ or Unholy Idol? written by Lauren G. Kilroy-Ewbank and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy Organ or Unholy Idol? focuses on the significance of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its accompanying imagery in eighteenth-century New Spain. Lauren G. Kilroy-Ewbank considers paintings, prints, devotional texts, and archival sources within the Mexican context alongside issues and debates occurring in Europe to situate the New Spanish cult within local and global developments. She examines the iconography of these religious images and frames them within broader socio-political and religious discourses related to the Eucharist, the sun, the Jesuits, scientific and anatomical ideas, and mysticism. Images of the Heart helped to champion the cult’s validity as it was attacked by religious reformers.

Book Synopsis Women in Convent Spaces and the Music Networks of Early Modern Barcelona by : Ascensión Mazuela-Anguita
Download or read book Women in Convent Spaces and the Music Networks of Early Modern Barcelona written by Ascensión Mazuela-Anguita and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first study of music in convent life in a single Hispanic city, Barcelona, during the early modern era. Exploring how convents were involved in the musical networks operating in sixteenth-century Barcelona, it challenges the invisibility of women in music history and reveals the intrinsic role played by nuns and lay women in the city’s urban musical culture. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, this innovative study offers a cross-disciplinary approach that not only reveals details of the rich musical life in Barcelona’s nunneries, but shows how they took part in wider national and transnational networks of musical distribution, including religious, commercial, and social dimensions of music. The connections of Barcelona convents to networks for the dissemination of music in and outside the city provide a rich example of the close relationship between musical networks, urban society, and popular culture. Addressing how music was understood as a marker of identity, prestige, and social status and, above all, as a conduit between earth and heaven, this book provides new insights into how women shaped musical traditions in the urban context. It is essential reading for scholars of early modern history, musicology, history of religion, and gender studies, as well as all those with an interest in urban history and the city of Barcelona. The book is supported by additional digital appendices, which include: Records of inquiries into the lineage of Santa Maria de Jonqueres nuns Development of the collections of choir books belonging to the convents of Santa Maria de Jonqueres and Sant Antoni i Santa Clara

Book Synopsis Cultural Encounters by : Mary Elizabeth Perry
Download or read book Cultural Encounters written by Mary Elizabeth Perry and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than just an expression of religious authority or an instrument of social control, the Inquisition was an arena where cultures met and clashed on both shores of the Atlantic. This pioneering volume examines how cultural identities were maintained despite oppression. Persecuted groups were able to survive the Inquisition by means of diverse strategies—whether Christianized Jews in Spain preserving their experiences in literature, or native American folk healers practicing medical care. These investigations of social resistance and cultural persistence will reinforce the cultural significance of the Inquisition. Contributors: Jaime Contreras, Anne J. Cruz, Jesús M.
