Book Synopsis Serenity: It's A God Deal by : Bill Hanks
Download or read book Serenity: It's A God Deal written by Bill Hanks and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Bill H., and I'm, well...complicated! Clinically, I'm a recovering drug addicta "with Attention Deficit Disorder to boota "who, after twenty-two years of consuming a plethora of mind-bending toxins, is very much grateful to be alive. In 1996, Bill recognized a problem with drugs and alcohol, and subsequently checked himself into a treatment center. As a result, Bill, in a volunteer capacity, taught weekly classes on recovery for ten years at the rehab center that helped him to help himself. Having personally worked with approximately eight thousand patients in recovery, he provided Twelve-Step based support and teachings to those in need. One of the objectives of this book is to incorporate into the mainstream the author's understanding of the Twelve-Step Program of Recovery. Although this book was written from the perspective of a recovering addict, the reality is that you don't have to be a drug addict or alcoholic to benefit from a spiritual pilgrimage that has led millions to peace of minda "from desperation and despair, to hope and then Serenity. After all, the only difference between the people of 'mainstream America' and those with addiction(s) are the ways in which they handle their problems. Peace of mind resides within these pages. This book is Bill's effort to reach out and, through lessons learned from his own experiences, help those in need find their way to Sobriety, Sanity and Serenity. Through his teachings and stories (some funny, some not so funny), the author hopes to touch every emotion, and perhaps feelings you didn't know you had."

Book Synopsis The Utopia Reader, Second Edition by : Gregory Claeys
Download or read book The Utopia Reader, Second Edition written by Gregory Claeys and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Utopia Reader compiles primary texts from a variety of authors and movements in the history of theorizing utopias. Utopianism is defined as the various ways of imagining, creating, or analyzing the ways and means of creating an ideal or alternative society. Prominent writers and scholars across history have long explored how or why to envision different ways of life. The volume includes texts from classical Greek literature, the Old Testament, and Plato’s Republic, to Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, to George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and beyond. By balancing well-known and obscure examples, the text provides a comprehensive and definitive collection of the various ways Utopias have been conceived throughout history and how Utopian ideals have served as criticisms of existing sociocultural conditions. This new edition includes many historically well-known works, little known but influential texts, and contemporary writings, providing an even more expansive coverage of the varieties of approaches and responses to the concept of utopia in the past, present, and even the future. In particular, the volume now includes feminist writings and work by authors of color, and contends with current concerns, such as the exploration of the ecological ideals of Utopia. Furthermore, Claeys and Sargent highlight twenty-first century trends and popular narrative explorations of Utopias through the genres of young adult dystopias, survivalist dystopias, and non-print utopias. Covering a range of original theories of utopianism and revealing the nuances and concerns of writers across history as they attempt to envision different, ideal societies, The Utopia Reader is an essential resource for anyone who envisions a better future.

Book Synopsis Secular Steeples 2nd edition by : Conrad Ostwalt
Download or read book Secular Steeples 2nd edition written by Conrad Ostwalt and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of secularization in America, this book provides students with an innovative way of understanding the relationship between religion and secular culture. In Secular Steeples, Conrad Ostwalt challenges long-held assumptions about the relationship between religion and culture and about the impact of secularization. Moving away from the idea that religion will diminish as secularization continues, Ostwalt identifies areas of popular culture where secular and sacred views and objectives interact and enrich each other. The book demonstrates how religious institutions use the secular and popular media of television, movies, and music to make sacred teachings relevant. From megachurches to sports arenas, the Bible to Harry Potter, biker churches to virtual worship communities, Ostwalt demonstrates how religion persists across cultural forms, secular and sacred, with secular culture expressing religious messages and sometimes containing more authentic religious content than official religious teachings. An ideal text for anyone studying religion and popular culture, each chapter provides questions for discussion, a list of important terms and guided readings.

Book Synopsis Commentary on the Song of Songs by : Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
Download or read book Commentary on the Song of Songs written by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – August 20, 1153) was a French abbot and the primary builder of the reforming Cistercian order. The Song of Songs is a book of the Hebrew Bible—one of the megillot (scrolls)—found in the last section of the Tanakh, known as the Ketuvim (or "Writings"). It is also known as Canticle of Canticles or simply Canticles from the Vulgate title Canticum Canticorum (Latin, "Song of Songs"). The protagonists of Song of Songs are a woman (identified in one verse as "the Shulamite") and a man, and the poem suggests movement from courtship to consummation. For instance, the man proclaims: "As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters." The woman answers: "As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste."Additionally, the Song includes a chorus, the "daughters of Jerusalem." (from wikipedia.com) This book contains 43 beautiful sermons that St. Bernard wrote on this book. He interprets the song of songs in reference to the love between God and the soul. God is deeply in love with us, and wills our love in return. This love between the soul and God, which is the most intimate love possible, is expressed in the analogy of bride and bridegroom, where the intimacy of love is especially expressed.
