Having been atta oked from three different sides and by forces three times superior to her own, Serbia was obliged to evacuate all her territory, to retire her army and a great number of civilian fugitives through the barren mountains of Alba nia to the Adriatic sea, and to live in exile for three years. During this pe riod she lost one third of her population and half her national wealth. It is true that she has come out of this war with. Book Synopsis Developing Cultural Identity in the Balkans by : Raymond Detrez
Download or read book Developing Cultural Identity in the Balkans written by Raymond Detrez and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental contrast between convergent and divergent tendencies in the development of Balkan cultural identity can be seen as an important determinative both in the contradictory self-images of people in the Balkans and in the often biased perceptions of Balkan societies held by external observers, past and present. In bringing together case studies from such heterogeneous lines of research as linguistics, anthropology, political, literary and cultural history, each presenting insightful analyses of micro- as well as macro-level aspects of identity construction in the Balkans, this collection of essays provides a forum for the elucidation and critical evaluation of an intriguing paradox which continues to characterize the cultural situation in the Balkans and which, moreover, is of undeniable relevance for our understanding of recent political developments. As such, it also provides a window into the actual state of scholarly interest in the rich interdisciplinary field of Balkan studies. This book contains a selection of papers presented at the international conference «Developing Cultural Identity in the Balkans: Convergence vs. Divergence», organized by the Center for Southeast European Studies at Ghent University on 12 and 13 December 2003 in Ghent.
Book Synopsis The Balkan Route by : Florian Riedler
Download or read book The Balkan Route written by Florian Riedler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume approaches the topic of mobility in Southeast Europe by offering the first detailed historical study of the land route connecting Istanbul with Belgrade. After this route that diagonally crosses Southeast Europe had been established in Roman times, it was as important for the Byzantines as the Ottomans to rule their Balkan territories. In the nineteenth century, the road was upgraded to a railroad and, most recently, to a motorway. The contributions in this volume focus on the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. They explore the various transformations of the route as well as its transformative role for the cities and regions along its course. This not only concerns the political function of the route to project the power of the successive empires. Also the historical actors such as merchants, travelling diplomats, Turkish guest workers or Middle Eastern refugees together with the various social, economic and cultural effects of their mobility are in the focus of attention. The overall aim is to gain a deeper understanding of Southeast Europe by foregrounding historical continuities and disruptions from a long-term perspective and by bringing into dialogue different national and regional approaches.
