Book Synopsis An Algebraic Introduction to Complex Projective Geometry by : Christian Peskine
Download or read book An Algebraic Introduction to Complex Projective Geometry written by Christian Peskine and published by . This book was released on 1843 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this introduction to commutative algebra, the author choses a route that leads the reader through the essential ideas, without getting embroiled in technicalities. He takes the reader quickly to the fundamentals of complex projective geometry, requiring only a basic knowledge of linear and multilinear algebra and some elementary group theory. The author divides the book into three parts. In the first, he develops the general theory of noetherian rings and modules. He includes a certain amount of homological algebra, and he emphasizes rings and modules of fractions as preparation for working with sheaves. In the second part, he discusses polynomial rings in several variables with coefficients in the field of complex numbers. After Noether's normalization lemma and Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, the author introduces affine complex schemes and their morphisms; he then proves Zariski's main theorem and Chevalley's semi-continuity theorem. Finally, the author's detailed study of Weil and Cartier divisors provides a solid background for modern intersection theory. This is an excellent textbook for those who seek an efficient and rapid introduction to the geometric applications of commutative algebra.

Book Synopsis The Colossus of Rhodes by : Nathan Badoud
Download or read book The Colossus of Rhodes written by Nathan Badoud and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colossus of Rhodes is both the most famous and the least well-known monument of Ancient Greece. Numbered among the Seven Wonders of the World, this bronze statue of the god Helios, thirty-four metres in height, was created by the sculptor Chares of Lindos between the years 295 and 283 BC, only to be destroyed by an earthquake in 227 BC. The legends that have spread after its collapse seem so strange and contradictory that, from an archaeological point of view, it has become a minor and almost neglected object, which specialists in Greek sculpture barely mention in their work. In The Colossus of Rhodes, the first comprehensive examination of the Colossus, Nathan Badoud mobilises a large array of sources, ranging from antiquity to the present day, proposing an intellectual excavation through the layers of the literary, artistic, and scientific tradition to discover the historical Colossus. It envisages the statue in its religious, political, and topographical contexts, exploring its function, its technique, its appearance, its meaning, and its location. Badoud reconsiders the beginnings of the Hellenistic world, marked by the emergence of Rhodes as an imperial power, embodied by the Colossus.

Book Synopsis Pliny the Elder and the Emergence of Renaissance Architecture by : Peter Fane-Saunders
Download or read book Pliny the Elder and the Emergence of Renaissance Architecture written by Peter Fane-Saunders and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naturalis historia by Pliny the Elder provided Renaissance scholars, artists and architects with details of ancient architectural practice and long-lost architectural wonders - material that was often unavailable elsewhere in classical literature. Pliny's descriptions frequently included the dimensions of these buildings, as well as details of their unusual construction materials and ornament. This book describes, for the first time, how the passages were interpreted from around 1430 to 1580, that is, from Alberti to Palladio. Chapters are arranged chronologically within three interrelated sections - antiquarianism; architectural writings; drawings and built monuments - thereby making it possible for the reader to follow the changing attitudes to Pliny over the period. The resulting study establishes the Naturalis historia as the single most important literary source after Vitruvius's De architectura.
