Book Synopsis Hemodynamic Monitoring by : Michael R. Pinsky
Download or read book Hemodynamic Monitoring written by Michael R. Pinsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, part of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine textbook series, teaches readers how to use hemodynamic monitoring, an essential skill for today’s intensivists. It offers a valuable guide for beginners, as well as for experienced intensivists who want to hone their skills, helping both groups detect an inadequacy of perfusion and make the right choices to achieve the main goal of hemodynamic monitoring in the critically ill, i.e., to correctly assess the cardiovascular system and its response to tissue oxygen demands. The book is divided into distinguished sections: from physiology to pathophysiology; clinical assessment and measurements; and clinical practice achievements including techniques, the basic goals in clinical practice as well as the more appropriate hemodynamic therapy to be applied in different conditions. All chapters use a learning-oriented style, with practical examples, key points and take home messages, helping readers quickly absorb the content and, at the same time, apply what they have learned in the clinical setting. The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine has developed the Lessons from the ICU series with the vision of providing focused and state-of-the-art overviews of central topics in Intensive Care and optimal resources for clinicians working in Intensive Care.
Book Synopsis Lung Ultrasound in the Critically Ill by : Daniel A. Lichtenstein
Download or read book Lung Ultrasound in the Critically Ill written by Daniel A. Lichtenstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a pioneer in critical care ultrasound, this book discusses the basic technique and “signatures” of lung ultrasound and explains its main clinical applications. The tools and clinical uses of the BLUE protocol, which allows diagnosis of most cases of acute respiratory failure, are first described in detail. Careful attention is then devoted to protocols derived from the BLUE protocol – the FALLS protocol for diagnosis and management of acute circulatory failure, the Pink protocol for use in ARDS, and the SESAME protocol for use in cardiac arrest – and to the LUCI-FLR program, a means of answering clinical questions while reducing radiation exposure. Finally, the book discusses all the possible settings in which lung ultrasound can be used, discipline by discipline and condition by condition. Lung Ultrasound in the Critically Ill comprehensively explains how ultrasound can become the stethoscope of modern medicine. It is a superb complement to the author’s previous book, Whole Body Ultrasonography in the Critically Ill.
Book Synopsis Sepsis Management in Resource-limited Settings by : Arjen M. Dondorp
Download or read book Sepsis Management in Resource-limited Settings written by Arjen M. Dondorp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. It constitutes a unique source of knowledge and guidance for all healthcare workers who care for patients with sepsis and septic shock in resource-limited settings. More than eighty percent of the worldwide deaths related to sepsis occur in resource-limited settings in low and middle-income countries. Current international sepsis guidelines cannot be implemented without adaptations towards these settings, mainly because of the difference in local resources and a different spectrum of infectious diseases causing sepsis. This prompted members of the Global Intensive Care working group of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU, Bangkok, Thailand) - among which the Editors – to develop with an international group of experts a comprehensive set of recommendations for the management of sepsis in resource-limited settings. Recommendations are based on both current scientific evidence and clinical experience of clinicians working in resource-limited settings. The book includes an overview chapter outlining the current challenges and future directions of sepsis management as well as general recommendations on the structure and organization of intensive care services in resource-limited settings. Specific recommendations on the recognition and management of patients with sepsis and septic shock in these settings are grouped into seven chapters. The book provides evidence-based practical guidance for doctors in low and middle income countries treating patients with sepsis, and highlights areas for further research and discussion.
Book Synopsis Essentials of Shock Management by : Gil Joon Suh
Download or read book Essentials of Shock Management written by Gil Joon Suh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to offer the reader first-rate guidance on shock management in the real world. Comprehensive, evidence-based, and up-to-date instruction is provided on optimal care of patients with different types of shock – septic, hemorrhagic, cardiogenic, anaphylactic, and obstructive – at all stages from initial response through to ICU admission. As well as management, the coverage encompasses pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and emerging trends. A further key feature is the use of a scenario-based approach to present a series of cases based on real-life experiences. Here, a narrative style and Q&A form are employed to vividly convey scenarios that may be encountered in clinical practice and to elucidate decision making in complex circumstances. When readers experience difficulty in answering the questions, the earlier sections can be consulted to identify the correct response. This book will be of great value for all health care professionals. In particular, it will be very helpful for novice or inexperienced practitioners in emergency medicine, critical care medicine, and traumatology.

Book Synopsis Whole Body Ultrasonography in the Critically Ill by : Daniel A. Lichtenstein
Download or read book Whole Body Ultrasonography in the Critically Ill written by Daniel A. Lichtenstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades it has been increasingly recognized that whole-body ultrasound is an invaluable tool in the critically ill. In addition to offering rapid whole-body assessment, it has the advantage of being a bedside approach that is available at all times and can be repeated at will. Accordingly, it permits the immediate institution of appropriate therapeutic management. Whole-Body Ultrasound in the Critically Ill is the sequel to the author’s previous books on the subject, which were first published in French in 1992 and 2002 and in English in 2004. This new volume reflects the latest state of knowledge by including a variety of improvements, revised definitions, and updated algorithms. Findings in respect of individual organs are clearly presented, and a particular feature is the in-depth coverage of the lungs, traditionally regarded as an area unsuitable for ultrasound. Throughout, the emphasis is on the practical therapeutic impact of the technique. Its value in a variety of settings, including unexplained shock, management of hemodynamic instability, acute respiratory failure (the BLUE protocol), and the critically ill neonate, is carefully explained. Interventional ultrasound and less widely recognized applications, such as mesenteric infarction, pneumoperitoneum, and intracranial hypertension, are also described. Pitfalls of the technique receive due attention. Today, whole-body ultrasound touches upon every area of critical care. This book, from the chief pioneer in the field, shows that the technique enables critical care physicians to detect therapeutically relevant signs easily and quickly. It will serve as an invaluable guide to the practice of a form of visual medicine.
Book Synopsis Controversies in Acute Kidney Injury by : J.A. Kellum
Download or read book Controversies in Acute Kidney Injury written by J.A. Kellum and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious and as yet incompletely understood disorder in which sudden impairment of kidney function occurs secondary to one or more of a variety of underlying conditions. This disorder is very common in (elderly) ICU patients and is associated with very high mortality. Many of those who survive suffer from permanent kidney failure and other long-term morbidities, which may include cardiovascular disease and immune dysfunction. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that AKI is not a single disease, but a syndrome comprised of multiple, often coexisting, etiologies. Being usually part of multiorgan failure syndrome, it calls for multiple organ support therapy. The publication at hand contains sections on prerenal azotemia syndromes, dying ‘of’ or ‘with’ AKI, pathophysiology of sepsis-induced acute kidney injury, developments in prevention / treatment / rehabilitation, and renal support. Reporting the latest recommendations from experts, it provides valuable information for those that are interested in understanding the disorder and its treatment options.

This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of patients treated for hematological malignancies is increasing steadily. To maximize cure rates, aggressive treatments have been introduced, including high-dose chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and targeted therapies. As a result, overall and disease-free survival rates have improved substantially, but at the price of life-threatening toxic and infectious complications that chiefly target the lung. This book provides clinicians caring for patients with hematological malignancies with detailed, up-to-date information on all relevant aspects of pulmonary involvement. Individual sections are devoted to epidemiology, diagnostic strategy, lung infections, non-infectious pulmonary involvement, and treatment, including decision making in patients with acute respiratory failure. Each of these sections contains a number of chapters, all written by leading international experts. In addition, the reader’s attention is drawn to important "pearls" relating to each condition.

Book Synopsis Clean Hands Save Lives by : Thierry Crouzet
Download or read book Clean Hands Save Lives written by Thierry Crouzet and published by Thaulk. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may not know it, but an innovation has made our world a better place. The use of alcohol-based handrubs protects us from infectious diseases and saves millions of lives each year through safer health care. Here is the story of this revolutionary formulation, made available without patent and offered as a gift to humanity by Professor Didier Pittet and his team at Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG). From bush doctors to giant pharmaceutical corporations, everyone can now produce effective handrubs, cheaply and easily. Didier Pittet’s medical odyssey has taken him to the four corners of the Earth. It also reveals a new path open to human society, one that pro- mises a radical shift from a predatory economic system to an economy of peace. Thierry Crouzet — blogger, essay writer, and novelist — is fascinated by contemporary issues located at the nexus of technology, politics, and lite- rature. A former journalist, his published works in French include Le Peuple des connecteurs [The Connected People], a reflection on our networked society; J’ai débranché [How I Unplugged], a tale of digital burnout; and La Quatrième Théorie [The Fourth Theory], a political techno-thriller.
