Par une méthode sociologique et historique prenant le temps et l'espace comme moyens et objets d'analyse, il produit des connaissances qui bouleversent l'ensemble des représentations et des pratiques concernant notre système éducatif. D'abord sont dissipées nombre d'illusions sur la prétendue rationalité scolaire. Ce livre montre que l'Ecole ne peut exister qu'en étant un temps et un espace fermés et en opposition permanente avec la société environnante ; bien loin de servir cette société, l'Ecole ne fonctionne qu'en la détruisant par une éducation adverse qui crée une autre société en symbiose avec un projet politique. Puis l'ouvrage découvre les erreurs de l'actuelle politique française d'éducation. Celle-ci, pour remédier aux difficultés socio-économiques de la " crise ", croit pouvoir adapter l'Ecole aux demandes des usagers scolaires et des acteurs de son environnement ; elle impose ainsi à l'Ecole une ouverture à l'espace-temps social qui pulvérise les structures nécessaires à l'enseignement scolaire. Dans cette contradiction, ni l'Ecole ni la politique actuelle ne peuvent s'accomplir ; au contraire, elles s'anéantissent réciproquement. Ce livre met ainsi en évidence le choix vital qui s'impose à tous : soit séparer totalement l'Ecole de son environnement social, pour qu'elle survive et agisse ; soit la désintégrer entièrement pour donner à tous les acteurs sociaux un rôle dans un système d'enseignement conforme aux vœux de la politique actuelle. Face à ce grave problème, l'originalité, la rigueur et la richesse de cette enquête, unanimement louées par les plus éminents spécialistes (de Jean-Claude Passeron à Roger Establet), apportent des résultats et des solutions indispensables pour tous ceux qui sont concernés par notre système éducatif et par la survie de notre société. " La radicalité de la thèse [que l'auteur] soutient sur la position aujourd'hui intenable de l'Ecole entre "fermeture et ouverture" justifie qu'une telle réflexion soit divulguée plus largement : radicalité de l'analyse certes "provocatrice", mais en ce sens qu'elle "provoque à penser" " (Jean-Claude Passeron).

Book excerpt: In 1944 Horkheimer and Adorno warned that industrial society turns reason into rationalization, and Polanyi warned of the dangers of the self-regulating market, but today, argues Stiegler, this regression of reason has led to societies dominated by unreason, stupidity and madness. However, philosophy in the second half of the twentieth century abandoned the critique of political economy, and poststructuralism left its heirs helpless and disarmed in face of the reign of stupidity and an economic crisis of global proportions. New theories and concepts are required today to think through these issues. The thinkers of poststructuralism Lyotard, Deleuze, Derrida must be re-read, as must the sources of their thought, Hegel and Marx. But we must also take account of Naomi Klein's critique of Milton Friedman and the Chicago School and her account of the 'shock doctrine'. In fact, argues Stiegler, a permanent 'state of shock' has prevailed since the beginning of the industrial revolution, intensified by the creative destruction brought about by the consumerist model. The result has been a capitalism that destroys desire and reason and in which every institution is undermined, above all those institutions that are the products par excellence of the Enlightenment the education system and universities. Through a powerful critique of thinkers from Marx to Derrida, Stiegler develops new conceptual weapons to fight this destruction. He argues that schools and universities must themselves be transformed: new educational institutions must be developed both to take account of the dangers of digitization and the internet and to enable us to take advantage of the new opportunities they make available.

New ideas and approaches are needed to tackle the severe and wicked problems with which contemporary societies are struggling. Especially in times of economic crisis, social innovation is regarded as one of the crucial elements needed to move forward. Our knowledge of its dynamics has significantly progressed, thanks to an abundance of studies on social innovation both general and sector-specific. However, despite the valuable research conducted over the past years, the systematic analysis of social innovation is still contested and incomplete. The questions asked in the book will be the following: 1. What is the nature of social innovations? 2.What patterns can be identified in social innovations emerging at the local level? 3.How is the emergence and spread of social innovations related to urban governance? More precisely, which conditions and arrangements facilitate and hinders social innovation? We explore these questions using different types of data and methods, and studying different contexts. In particular, we focus on innovations that aim at solving problems of the young unemployed, single parents and migrants. This analysis is based on original research carried out in the period 2010-2013 in the framework of a European project with a specific empirical research strategy. Research was carried out in 20 cities in 10 different European countries.

Book excerpt: The Violence of Modernity turns to Charles Baudelaire, one of the most canonical figures of literary modernism, in order to reclaim an aesthetic legacy for ethical inquiry and historical critique. Works of modern literature are commonly theorized as symptomatic responses to the trauma of history. In a climate that tends to privilege crisis over critique, Debarati Sanyal argues that it is urgent to rethink literary experience in terms that recall its contestatory potential. Examining Baudelaire's poems afresh, she shifts the focus of critical attention toward an account of modernism as an active engagement with violence, specifically the violence of history in nineteenth-century France. Sanyal analyzes a literary current that uses the traditional hallmarks of modernism—irony, intertextuality, self-reflexivity, and formalism—to challenge the historical violence of modernity. Baudelaire and the committed ironists writing in his wake teach us how to read and resist the violence of history, and thereby to challenge the melancholy tenor of our contemporary "wound culture." In a series of provocative readings, Sanyal presents Baudelaire's poetry as an aesthetic form that contests historical violence through rhetorical strategies of complicity, counterviolence, and critique. The book develops a new account of Baudelaire's significance as a modernist by dislodging him both from his traditional status as a practitioner of "art for art's sake" and from his more recent incarnation as the poet of trauma. Following her extended analysis of Baudelaire's poetry, Sanyal in later chapters considers a number of authors influenced by his strategies—including Rachilde, Virginie Despentes, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre—to examine the relevance of their interventions for our current climate of trauma and terror. The result is a study that underscores how Baudelaire's legacy continues to energize literary engagements with the violence of modernity.
