Book excerpt: The modification of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the size of the modifications differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We demonstrate a fully data-driven method for separating quark and gluon contributions to jet observables using a statistical technique called topic modeling. We will also demonstrate that jet substructures, such as jet shapes and jet fragmentation function, could be extracted using this data-driven method. This proof-of-concept study is based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the PYQUEN generator with statistics accessible in Run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider. These results suggest the potential for an experimental determination of quark- and gluon-jet spectra and their substructures.

Book excerpt: Jet shapes at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV have been measured by CDF at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The jet shape is mainly formed by parton emission before hadronization. The jet shapes may also be used to differ between quark and gluon jets. Two approaches are tried. Jet shape variables are input to a feed forward neural network trained on QCD Monte Carlos. We observe a variation of the quark content of jets as a function of jet transverse energy. The second approach consists of constructing a likelihood function, based on Monte Carlo predictions, with the Mellin moments of the momentum of charged tracks in jets. Differences are found between gluon-like jets in 2-jet events and quark-like jets in photon-jet events.

Book excerpt: We suggest a procedure, based on the kinematics of qg-scattering in high-p/sub T/ events, whereby it is possible to obtain enriched samples of quark and gluon jets. At SppS energies this could be used to indicate whether quark and gluon jet fragmentation agree or not. At higher energies the application would rather be to study the differences in the parton cascades, i.e. jet substructure.

Book Synopsis Probing the Quark-gluon Plasma at the LHC with Z0-tagged Jets in CMS. by :
Download or read book Probing the Quark-gluon Plasma at the LHC with Z0-tagged Jets in CMS. written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important tool in quark-gluon plasma studies at RHIC has been the measurement of dijets investigated via leading hadron correlations. With much higher rates for hard processes at the Large Hadron Collider, studies of Z°-tagged jets become possible. A clear experimental signature is provided by the measurement of muon pairs from the Z° decays, for which CMS is an ideally suited detector. Instead of measuring back-to-back correlations of two strongly interacting particles, one side is replaced by an electromagnetic probe which propagates through the plasma undisturbed and provides a measurement of the energy of the initial hard scattering. We propose to use lepton-pair tagged jets to study medium-induced partonic energy loss and to measure in-medium parton fragmentation functions. The lepton pairs from semileptonic decays of heavy meson pairs (B{bar B} and D{bar D}) are a background source for the tagged dilepton-jet signal. We present the calculated signal rates (using PYTHIA) and background rates (using HVQMNR). We also discuss strategies for maximizing the signal-to-background ratio.

Book Synopsis Quark-gluon Discrimination in the Search for Gluino Pair Production at the LHC. by :
Download or read book Quark-gluon Discrimination in the Search for Gluino Pair Production at the LHC. written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, we study the impact of including quark- and gluon-initiated jet discrimination in the search for strongly interacting supersymmetric particles at the LHC. Taking the example of gluino pair production, considerable improvement is observed in the LHC search reach on including the jet substructure observables to the standard kinematic variables within a multivariate analysis. In particular, quark and gluon jet separation has higher impact in the region of intermediate mass-gap between the gluino and the lightest neutralino, as the difference between the signal and the standard model background kinematic distributions is reduced in this region. We also compare the predictions from different Monte Carlo event generators to estimate the uncertainty originating from the modelling of the parton shower and hadronization processes.

Download or read book Direct Photon Production in Association with a Heavy Quark written by Tzvetalina P. Stavreva and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In this Thesis we present the Next-To-Leading-Order calculation, O(alpha alpha_s^2), of the inclusive cross section for a photon and a heavy quark (charm or bottom), p bar p / pp -> gamma +Q +X, (Q=c, b) at hadron colliders. We include fragmentation effects through the Next-To-Leading-Order. This calculation is performed with the use of a phase space slicing technique so that the effects of experimental cuts can be easily included. We study in detail the characteristics of this process at both the Tevatron and the LHC. Results for the ratios of the charm and bottom cross sections are presented and the systematics of the various subprocesses are compared and contrasted. The theory predictions are compared to experimental measurements from the DO collaboration at Fermilab. A brief overview of the LO massive calculation is also presented, and compared to the NLO massless case. We predict that the investigation of this process and our results will be relevant in the study of heavy quark PDFs at the LHC.
