O Capítulo 1 apresenta os fundamentos da tecnologia de separação por membranas; nele os profissionais que não tiveram contato com o tema poderão conhecer os principais aspectos técnicos sobre membranas. Os Capítulos 2 e 3 versam sobre o uso de membranas no tratamento para potabilização e dessalinização de água. O uso crescente de membranas, em estações de tratamento de águas urbanas no mundo, tem aumentado vertiginosamente, seja para substituir os processos físicoquímicos convencionais, seja para complementá-los. O tratamento de águas salobras e salgadas (marinhas) utilizando membranas tem tido um crescimento muito expressivo em regiões onde há escassez de água doce. Os Capítulos 4, 5 e 6 abordam os usos industriais dos PSM, e três tipos de indústrias são apresentados: laticínios, têxtil e do petróleo. O Capítulo 7 discute essencialmente as oportunidades de reúso de água com o auxílio da aplicação de PSM. Há uma tendência mundial muito forte de fechar os circuitos de água nas indústrias no intuito de conservar água e recuperar insumos, e as membranas podem ter um papel importante na viabilização desses objetivos. Espera-se que esta publicação venha preencher uma pequena lacuna de conhecimento de membranas no Brasil, bem como de seus usos para tratamento e reúso de águas e efluentes.

Book excerpt: A Avicultura nacional passou por grandes transformações na década de 70, que levaram ao aumento de produção e organização dos sistemas produtivos, principalmente na região Sul. No Estado de Santa Catarina, essas transformações impulsionaram a instalação de diversas indústrias frigoríficas de abate e processamento de aves, que consolidaram essa atividade econômica no mesmo, a ponto de algumas dessas indústrias serem as maiores e mais importantes do ramo no País. A cadeia produtiva do frango confere ao Brasil os títulos mundiais de segundo maior produtor e o primeiro lugar em exportações de carne de frango. As indústrias frigoríficas, como as demais indústrias de alimentos, consomem grande volume de água que é fundamental ao processo e, portanto, também são grandes produtoras de efluentes industriais. A política nacional de recursos hídricos, seguindo uma tendência mundial, prevê o maior controle das fontes naturais de água e da emissão de poluentes no meio ambiente. Atualmente no Brasil, a captação privada de água está sendo licenciada através de outorgas e em um futuro próximo será taxada. As questões de disponibilidade e escassez de água estão cada vez mais importantes e a busca de formas alternativas de suprimento e tratamento estão sendo pesquisadas. O reuso de águas é uma dessas alternativas, propondo o tratamento de esgotos/efluentes para fins potáveis ou não-potáveis. Efluentes tratados possuem diversas possibilidades de aplicação, em especial, na indústria. Os processos de separação com membranas, sendo uma tecnologia relativamente nova, promissora e bastante eficiente, apresentam-se como alternativas viáveis para o tratamento de efluentes industriais visando a sua reutilização. Neste trabalho, membranas poliméricas de PVDF (Polifluoreto de Vinilideno) foram preparadas utilizando a técnica de inversão de fases e coagulação do polímero em solução homogênea em banho de não-solvente. Estas membranas foram utilizadas no tratamento de três diferentes efluentes de uma indústria frigorífica de abate e processamento de frangos: Água de resfriamento, de escaldagem e o efluente oriundo da estação de tratamento de efluentes (ETE). A água de resfriamento foi preliminarmente tratada com membrana em célula de filtração de bancada com fluxo perpendicular, para a investigação das condições operacionais ótimas, que resultassem em maiores fluxos permeados e baixos parâmetros físico-químicos, principalmente turbidez, cor e D.Q.O. Estes ensaios preliminares indicaram a pressão de 2 bar e a temperatura de 40ðC, como condições favoráveis a um maior fluxo permeado. Desta forma, tanto a água de resfriamento, como a de escaldagem e o efluente da ETE foram filtrados em equipamento em escala piloto operando em fluxo tangencial, inicialmente utilizando-se estas mesmas condições experimentais, embora outras condições também tenham sido testadas. A ultrafiltração com membranas apresentou eficiência na redução da condutividade elétrica, cor, turbidez e D.Q.O. das suspensões tratadas. De uma forma geral, os efluentes apresentaram expressiva redução de cor e eliminação quase total da turbidez. Para a água de resfriamento alcançaram-se redução superior a 77% na D.Q.O. e fluxos permeados de até 140 L/h.m2, enquanto para a água de escaldagem, fluxos permeados de até 50 L/h.m2 e redução de 65% na D.Q.O. foram obtidos. Para o efluente misto, houve uma redução na D.Q.O. de no máximo 75% e fluxo permeado de 40 L/h.m2.O depósito de material retido sobre a membrana durante uma filtração, foi quantificado e observou-se um aumento gradual a uma taxa praticamente constante até aproximadamente 2 horas depois de iniciado o processo. As membranas novas (sem uso) foram submetidas ao teste de histerese e verificou-se uma compactação importante quando submetidas a um ciclo de pressão crescente e decrescente. Esta compactação foi quantificada pela redução de fluxo permeado para as diferentes suspensões filtradas. Após o uso, foi testado um programa de limpeza das membranas. Os resultados foram variáveis em função das suspensões utilizadas na ultrafiltração. Para um melhor entendimento do processo de colmatagem das membranas, utilizou-se da técnica de FTIR (Espectroscopia na Região do Infravermelho), onde se constatou que somente a limpeza física da membrana foi capaz de eliminar parte expressiva do material adsorvido em sua superfície.

Book excerpt: In 1982 the International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control (IAWPRC), as it was then called, established a Task Group on Mathematical Modelling for Design and Operation of Activated Sludge Processes. The aim of the Task Group was to create a common platform that could be used for the future development of models for COD and N removal with a minimum of complexity. As the collaborative result of the work of several modelling groups, the Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) was published in 1987, exactly 25 years ago. The ASM1 can be considered as the reference model, since this model triggered the general acceptance of wastewater treatment modelling, first in the research community and later on also in practice. ASM1 has become a reference for many scientific and practical projects, and has been implemented (in some cases with modifications) in most of the commercial software available for modelling and simulation of plants for N removal. The models have grown more complex over the years, from ASM1, including N removal processes, to ASM2 (and its variations) including P removal processes, and ASM3 that corrects the deficiencies of ASM1 and is based on a metabolic approach to modelling. So far, ASM1 is the most widely applied. Applications of Activated Sludge Models has been prepared in celebration of 25 years of ASM1 and in tribute to the activated sludge modelling pioneer, the late Professor G.v.R. Marrais. It consists of a dozen of practical applications for ASM models to model development, plant optimization, extension, upgrade, retrofit and troubleshooting, carried out by the members of the Delft modelling group over the last two decades.
