Book excerpt: Following a nuclear war that drove the survivors to seek refuge underground for 100 years, humanity is finally making a comeback—or so it appears. As people work together to rebuild their communities, both big and small, little do they realize they’re facing an even bigger threat than the one that nearly doomed their civilization. And this time the danger isn’t from Earth. Fleeing a deadly global conflict on their own planet, a steady stream of refugees from Venus is showing up on our planet, wreaking havoc wherever they go. An elite group known as Sentry is charged with fighting the aliens and keeping their existence a secret from the general public. While Sentry has been successful so far, the Venusians are about to raise the stakes. Foremost amongst the Sentry agents is Ryland Ambrose, an elite warrior with exceptional abilities who was recruited into the program as a young child. As he battles against the increasingly dire alien menace, Ryland is also wrestling with a host of internal demons. If he fails to overcome them, not only could his own life be in peril, he could also jeopardize the entire mission, plunging Earth once more into a fiery maelstrom of chaos and death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if Adolf Hitler didn’t die in 1945? That’s the premise of the thrilling new novel Hexenkessel: The Second Coming. Peter Thomas McDougall’s stunning book interweaves two stories. The first tells the journey of Hitler up until 1945, and the assistance given by the mysterious Dr Vorshung. The second story follows his two chief protagonists from the future, Petersen and Wagner, who want to piece together evidence proving Hitler did not die by suicide in the final days of World War II. In the second part of the book, the space/time locations are reversed. Hitler travels forward in time to present day to lead a fanatical band of Nazi terrorists unleashing war in the Middle East, before crippling the Internet and destroying the populations of Eastern Europe through genetically engineered viruses. The novel relates the incredible number of times Hitler narrowly avoided assassination attempts, his rise and fall from power, and his radical transformation after he is transported to modern times, when he again develops a deadly and daring plan to take over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pete Anderson, the only Canadian officer to escape from a World War I POW camp and other adventures in the Russian revolution Pete Anderson was a genuine Canadian hero. Canadians generally agree that heroes are celebrated less in their culture than in some others. This treatment of heroes does little to recognize and value the many ordinary men and women who went before to attain extraordinary achievements. Pete Anderson, whom this book is about, was such a person. He didn’t change the world. But he did make a significant difference. In typical Canadian fashion, he didn’t view himself as a hero. Before going to war in 1914, Anderson had been an early pioneer in Edmonton, Alberta, where he had been a successful, rich, and respected businessman. He was a middle-aged man when he fought in the First World War. Shortly after arriving in France, he was captured by the enemy, on his birthday. In a daring escape, he was able to breach the defences of the prisoner of war camp in which he was held and to return to Britain, after an eventful transit through much of Germany. He, and others, thought that he might have been the first Canadian to have escaped from the Germans. He was not. A fellow Albertan, Cpl. Ernest Atherton of the 10th Battalion, probably escaped slightly earlier. However, Anderson was not only the first Canadian officer to successfully escape, he was also the only Canadian officer to escape during the First World War (many others made the attempt but were recaptured). Towards the end of the war, Anderson volunteered to fight in northern Russia, first against the Germans and then as part of an Allied attempt to overthrow the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. When he returned from his wars, he had earned two Distinguished Service Orders (DSO Bar), a senior honour awarded for exemplary service under enemy fire.

With little effort, he took care of himself, having learned by being brought up in isolation, deep into the timber of the Ozark Mountains. Exhibiting these traits, he did both good and bad things, both of which tended to be excessive, even in the midst of war and lawlessness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is love the most revolutionary of all acts? In this wide-ranging collection of twelve short stories, a startling array of characters explore their perspectives on love. The stories sweep from sharp realism to heady allegory, haunting fables to sci-fi thrillers, starring teens and drifting husbands, futuristic automatons and talking dogs, gardeners and gatekeepers, a blind girl, a young father, and many more. In “Calamity Jane,” see love through the eyes of teenage boys obsessed with the calamitous girl of the title; revisit the famous Greek love story in “Orpheus and Eurydice”; Dan’s mechanical automaton seems to be his truest friend in the harshly conformist world of “Automatonomatopoeia”; a Crimean revolutionary gets waylaid at a mysterious gate in “The Invitation”; on a construction site in Yugoslavia, a young man tries to come to grips with unconventional fatherhood in “Vikings”; and in “The Conversation”, a blind woman manages her relationship with a hectoring mother while finding other types of love. These are just a few of the tales in Resistance, Revolution and Other Love Stories. Anyone interested in the struggle against stifling societal powers and the potency of love will see some of themselves in these pages. By turns exciting, meditative, and funny, these enjoyable, thought-provoking stories will linger long after the book is closed. Let the revolution begin!
