Book Synopsis A History of Christianity in Indonesia by : Karel Steenbrink
Download or read book A History of Christianity in Indonesia written by Karel Steenbrink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.
Book Synopsis Empire and Religion by : Elena Muñiz Grijalvo
Download or read book Empire and Religion written by Elena Muñiz Grijalvo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the nature of religious change in the Greek-speaking cities of the Roman Empire. Emphasis is put on those developments that apparently were not the direct result of Roman actions: the intensification of idiosyncratically Greek features in the religious life of the cities (Heller, Muñiz, Camia); the active role of a new kind of Hellenism in the design of imperial religious policies (Gordillo, Galimberti, Rosillo-López); or the locally different responses to central religious initiatives, and the influence of those local responses in other imperial contexts (Cortés, Melfi, Lozano, Rizakis). All the chapters try to suggest that religion in the Greek cities of the empire was both conservative and innovative, and that the ‘Roman factor’ helps to explain this apparent paradox.

Book Synopsis Cultural Heritage and International Law by : Evelyne Lagrange
Download or read book Cultural Heritage and International Law written by Evelyne Lagrange and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the objects, means and ends of international cultural heritage protection. It starts from a broad conception of cultural heritage that encompasses both tangible property, such as museum objects or buildings, and intangible heritage, such as languages and traditions. Cultural heritage thus defined is protected by various legal regimes, including the law of armed conflicts, UNESCO Conventions and international criminal law. With a view to strengthening international protection, the authors analyze existing regimes and elaborate innovative concepts, such as blue helmets of culture and safe havens for endangered cultural heritage. Finally, the ends of international protection come to the fore, and the authors address possible conflicts between protecting cultural diversity and wishes to strengthen cultural identity.

Book Synopsis Genre et fondamentalismes/Gender and Fundamentalisms by : Fatou Sow
Download or read book Genre et fondamentalismes/Gender and Fundamentalisms written by Fatou Sow and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, why and how can religion and culture be both sources, and places of expression for fundamentalisms, particularly in relation to politics? Those are the central questions asked throughout this book alongside a discussion on the result when religion, strenthened by culture, is used as a political tool to access moral and social power. Cultural and religious messages often form the basis of decisions, laws and programs made in politics, and have a direct effect on society in general, and on women and gender relations in particular. The various forms taken by fundamentalisms in some African countries and the contexts under which they have emerged, the ways in which they (re)shape identities and relationships between men and women are also analysed in this book. These fundamentalisms are frequently sources of concern in social debates, in feminist and feminine organizations as well as in academia and politics. The manipulation of cultures and religions are becoming progressively political, and consequently can cause social discrimination, or even physical, moral, and symbolic violence.

Book Synopsis Narratives of fear and safety by : Kaisa Kaukiainen
Download or read book Narratives of fear and safety written by Kaisa Kaukiainen and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this edited volume, written in English and French, tackle the intriguing problems of fear and safety by analysing their various meanings and manifestations in literature and other narrative media. The articles bring forth new, cross-cultural interpretations on fear and safety through examining what kinds of genre-specific means of world-making narratives use to express these two affectivities. The articles also show how important it is to study these themes in order to understand challenges in times of global threats, such as the climate crisis. The main themes of the book are approached from various theoretical perspectives as related to their literary and cultural representations. Recent trends in research, such as affect and risk theory, serve as the basis for the discussion. The articles in the volume also draw from disciplines such as gender studies and trauma studies to examine the threats posed by collective fears and aggression on individuals' lives and propose ways of coping with fear. These themes are addressed also in articles analysing new adaptations of old myths that retell stories of the past. Many of the articles in the volume discuss apocalyptic and dystopian narratives that currently permeate the entire cultural landscape. Dystopian narratives do not only deal with future threats, such as totalitarianism, technocracy, or environmental disasters, but also suggest alternative ways of being and new hopes in the form of political resistance.

This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Liber Amicorum is published on the occasion of the retirement of Professor Božidar Bakotić from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law, after an impressive career that started in 1961. His colleagues and former students have contributed to this collection of essays dealing with a variety of topics in the fields of international law which Professor Bakotić himself has been most active in. Therefore, the majority of essays deal with the subjects of international law, the various international régimes of spaces, the international protection of human rights and humanitarian law, the settlement of international disputes and the law of armed conflicts. Notwithstanding the specific international developments over the last twenty years in the geographic area where Professor Bakotić has served (Southeastern Europe), all the authors of the contributions to this Liber Amicorum have dealt with their topics at the level of general international law. The book comprises 32 essays from scholars who had close relations with Professor Bakotić in the course of his career at the Zagreb Faculty of Law, in various other law schools and international organisations, in the International Law Association, in the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Diplomatic Academy. The majority of essays are in English and six are in French.
Book Synopsis Identités sahéliennes en temps de crise by : Amy Niang
Download or read book Identités sahéliennes en temps de crise written by Amy Niang and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This multidisciplinary publication presents critical reflections on the dynamics of identity formation in a Sahel “in crisis”: a moment of sudden rupture and change that radically alters the social and cultural structures shaping the present of Sahel societies, but which also reveal them to be political instruments with an international significance. The contributions show how conflict, movement, and aesthetics shape identity practices that produce temporal, contingent and constantly changing ideologies, legitimacies, imaginaries, and new ways of life in the Sahel.
