Book Synopsis Sentence Strategies for Multilingual Learners by : Nell Scharff Panero
Download or read book Sentence Strategies for Multilingual Learners written by Nell Scharff Panero and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents Combinations as a set of high-yield instructional strategies for advancing academic literacy for multilingual learners and all students. It discusses the strategies themselves as well as how they work to advance content and language learning simultaneously, across the grades and content areas. The book is particularly beneficial for all teachers working with linguistically and culturally diverse learners to accelerate their language and content learning. Utilizing these strategies will not only greatly improve students’ writing but also supports their critical thinking, content area reading and language comprehension skills. This book argues for utilizing Combinations with Strategic Inquiry, presenting evidence of how each amplifies the impact of the other, and how together they address many of the challenges to learning new and counter-cultural methods and to establishing school and district cultures in support of multilingual learners’ success. This book is a great resource for classroom teachers, literacy coaches and school and district administrators who want to support multilingual learners and all students to thrive.
Book Synopsis The Writing Revolution by : Judith C. Hochman
Download or read book The Writing Revolution written by Judith C. Hochman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why you need a writing revolution in your classroom and how to lead it The Writing Revolution (TWR) provides a clear method of instruction that you can use no matter what subject or grade level you teach. The model, also known as The Hochman Method, has demonstrated, over and over, that it can turn weak writers into strong communicators by focusing on specific techniques that match their needs and by providing them with targeted feedback. Insurmountable as the challenges faced by many students may seem, The Writing Revolution can make a dramatic difference. And the method does more than improve writing skills. It also helps: Boost reading comprehension Improve organizational and study skills Enhance speaking abilities Develop analytical capabilities The Writing Revolution is as much a method of teaching content as it is a method of teaching writing. There's no separate writing block and no separate writing curriculum. Instead, teachers of all subjects adapt the TWR strategies and activities to their current curriculum and weave them into their content instruction. But perhaps what's most revolutionary about the TWR method is that it takes the mystery out of learning to write well. It breaks the writing process down into manageable chunks and then has students practice the chunks they need, repeatedly, while also learning content.

Book Synopsis Mechanically Inclined by : Jeff Anderson
Download or read book Mechanically Inclined written by Jeff Anderson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some teachers love grammar and some hate it, but nearly all struggle to find ways of making the mechanics of English meaningful to kids. As a middle school teacher, Jeff Anderson also discovered that his students were not grasping the basics, and that it was preventing them from reaching their potential as writers. Jeff readily admits, “I am not a grammarian, nor am I punctilious about anything,” so he began researching and testing the ideas of scores of grammar experts in his classroom, gradually finding successful ways of integrating grammar instruction into writer's workshop. Mechanically Inclined is the culmination of years of experimentation that merges the best of writer's workshop elements with relevant theory about how and why skills should be taught. It connects theory about using grammar in context with practical instructional strategies, explains why kids often don't understand or apply grammar and mechanics correctly, focuses on attending to the “high payoff,” or most common errors in student writing, and shows how to carefully construct a workshop environment that can best support grammar and mechanics concepts. Jeff emphasizes four key elements in his teaching:short daily instruction in grammar and mechanics within writer's workshop;using high-quality mentor texts to teach grammar and mechanics in context;visual scaffolds, including wall charts, and visual cues that can be pasted into writer's notebooks;regular, short routines, like “express-lane edits,” that help students spot and correct errors automatically.Comprising an overview of the research-based context for grammar instruction, a series of over thirty detailed lessons, and an appendix of helpful forms and instructional tools, Mechanically Inclined is a boon to teachers regardless of their level of grammar-phobia. It shifts the negative, rule-plagued emphasis of much grammar instruction into one which celebrates the power and beauty these tools have in shaping all forms of writing.

Book Synopsis Strategies and Structures by : Gary Dean Prideaux
Download or read book Strategies and Structures written by Gary Dean Prideaux and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the nature of processing strategies is explored in some detail, with an attempt to cut through the maze of often contradictory and confused proposals concerning the nature and form of various strategies. Once a preliminary conception of the nature of cognitive strategies and a hypothesis of how they interact with linguistic structures has been reached, it will be explored how such strategies are employed by examining experiments which address the role played by certain of these strategies in the comprehension and production of sentences. The authors draw a distinction between a strategy on the one hand and a grammatical structure on the other. They argued that, in principle, strategies ought to be formulated as language-independent, cognitively based operations which are involved in cognitive domains other than language, but which, in language processing, interact with language-specific structures to facilitate processing. Moreover, strategies are not linguistic rules, since, unlike rules, they permit exceptions and express tendencies rather than firm yes-no choices.
Book Synopsis Sentence.: A Period-to-Period Guide to Building Better Readers and Writers by : Geraldine Woods
Download or read book Sentence.: A Period-to-Period Guide to Building Better Readers and Writers written by Geraldine Woods and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes it’s better to start small, with a sentence. Every English teacher has experienced it: students staring at an empty page, seemingly paralyzed by a writing assignment. When this happens, it may be time to back off from the Big Idea approach to the art of reading and writing, and zero in on a single sentence. In this book, a master teacher offers a complete guide to a sentence-level approach. Helping students recognize the techniques that make sentences great is the first step, and there are plenty of examples here from YA novels, TV shows, and song lyrics as well as the novels, poetry, and nonfiction pieces that form the canon of middle and high school reading lists. Lesson plans include activities to introduce the featured element of style; questions to guide students in their analysis; and writing prompts and activities to spark students’ interest and creativity. With this Little-to-Big strategy, students move quickly from analysis of the words between two periods to the universe of ideas of which that sentence is a part. They may even be eager to write their own

Book Synopsis How to Write a Children's Picture Book Volume II: Word, Sentence, Scene, Story by : Eve Heidi Bine-Stock
Download or read book How to Write a Children's Picture Book Volume II: Word, Sentence, Scene, Story written by Eve Heidi Bine-Stock and published by Eve Heidi Bine-Stock. This book was released on 2017-03-05 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recommended by writing instructors and award-winning authors. Whereas Volume I of this series investigates the overall structure of children's picture storybooks at the macro level, this volume, Volume II, investigates the very building blocks of picture storybooks at the micro level: the word, the sentence, the scene and the story. We look at the importance of word choice for giving the story meaning and cohesion. We look at ways to change sentence structure to emphasize the information that is important, and to ensure that sentences flow easily from one to another. We look at the scene: how to begin it, how to end it, and how to create the Beats of action-reaction that make up the scene. And finally we look at the story: what types of problems must a character solve? When does a story introduce a problem? And once a problem is introduced, how do picture storybooks move from problem to solution? What types of solutions do characters find? Is there any part of a story that occurs after the solution is found? To answer these and other questions is to describe storytelling strategies. We look at enduringly popular children's picture storybooks to see what storytelling strategies they employ.

This book was released on 2024-10-05 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language learning process not only enhances individuals' communication skills but also broadens their cognitive, cultural, and social capacities. Each language, with its unique structure, rules, and cultural background, opens a new world to the learner. Although this process can sometimes be complex and challenging, it also offers countless opportunities. Developing effective strategies to overcome the challenges of language learning and to make this process more efficient is of great importance. This book aims to assist you in overcoming the obstacles you might encounter on your language learning journey and in conducting your learning process in a more systematic way. One of the core focuses of the book is to comprehensively examine the role of cognates and similar words in language learning. Cognates are significant tools that facilitate the learning process by leveraging the similarities between the root structures of a language and their counterparts in other languages. These words present familiar structures to learners, thereby making the acquisition of a new language quicker and more effective. The book provides in-depth information on how to learn cognates, how to make this learning permanent, and the contributions of cognates to the language learning process. The section on Cognates and Similar Words discusses the advantages of these words in the language learning process and how they can be used. The similarities in the meaning and structure of cognates reduce the difficulties faced by learners and make the learning process more efficient. This section offers practical information and strategies on how students can effectively learn cognates and how to make this knowledge permanent. Additionally, it details techniques for working with cognates and the best approaches to learning these words. The section on the Impact of Repetition on Learning explores the critical role of repetition in memory and learning processes. Repetition is considered an effective strategy for transferring information into long-term memory. This section comprehensively examines how repetition should be done, which techniques are effective, and the positive effects of repetition on learning. It details the impact of repetition on expanding vocabulary, mastering grammatical structures, and developing overall language skills. The book outlines ways to implement repetition strategies and the benefits of these strategies in the language learning process. The section on Teaching Methods Combining Cognates and Repetition offers practical suggestions on how to make repetition strategies with cognates more effective. This section provides detailed information on how teachers and students can apply repetition with cognates. It also explains how these strategies can be applied through weekly lesson plans and activities for students. The aim is to demonstrate how successful results can be achieved in the language learning process using these methods. The final section, Conclusion and Evaluation, summarizes all the information presented and assesses the role of cognates and repetition in language learning. This section highlights how the methods discussed in the book can be effectively applied and the contributions of these processes to language learning. It also offers suggestions for future research to further improve the language learning process. This book provides comprehensive information on how to effectively use cognates and repetition strategies in the language learning process. It serves as an important resource for language teachers, students, and anyone interested in language learning. We hope that this book will be useful for anyone looking to overcome the challenges of language learning and make the learning process more efficient. We wish for this book to be a guide in your language learning journey and to make your learning process more meaningful and effective. With the methods and strategies presented, we hope to assist you in achieving your language learning goals.

This book was released on 2008-05-21 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume (including a comprehensive introduction) investigate semantic and discourse-related aspects of subordination and coordination, in particular the relationship between subordination/coordination at the sentence level and subordination/coordination – or hierarchical/non-hierarchical organization – at the discourse level. The contributions in part I are concerned with central theoretical questions; part II consists of corpus-based cross-linguistic studies of clause combining and discourse structure, involving at least two of the languages English, German, Dutch, French and Norwegian; part III contains papers addressing specific – predominantly semantic – topics relating to German, English or French; and the papers in part IV approach the topic of subordination, coordination and rhetorical relations from a diachronic (Old Indic and Early Germanic) perspective. The book aims to contribute to a better understanding of information packaging on the sentence and text level related, within a particular language as well as cross-linguistically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4.7 million designated English language learners attend public schools (Office of English Language Acquisition, 2002). What kind of educational program brings about the best results? What are sound practices for facilitating English language acquisition? How can English language learners have academic success in subject areas? How do we teach English language learners in our classrooms? - p. 5.

Book Synopsis Strategic Inquiry by : Nell Scharff Panero
Download or read book Strategic Inquiry written by Nell Scharff Panero and published by Harvard Education Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Inquiry is an innovative model for promoting teacher collaboration around identifying specific “learning gaps” that keep struggling students from succeeding. Gaps may include anything from the proper use of commas and conjunctions to concepts such as “slope” in math. The authors argue that addressing these critical learning gaps can lead to big changes in student success, in teachers’ sense of efficacy, and in school culture. The strategic inquiry model has been implemented in schools and districts around the country, including New York City, where it was rigorously evaluated with impressive results. As Common Core standards raise the bar for student learning ever higher, this proven approach promises to build teachers’ capacity for closing the gap between where struggling students are and where they need to be."
