Book Synopsis Aerospace Sensors by : Alexander Nebylov
Download or read book Aerospace Sensors written by Alexander Nebylov and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern air and space craft demand a huge variety of sensing elements for detecting and controlling their behavior and operation. These sensors often differ significantly from those designed for applications in automobile, ship, railway, and other forms of transportation, and those used in industrial, chemical, medical, and other areas. This book offers insight into an appropriate selection of these sensors and describes their principles of operation, design, and achievable performance along with particulars of their construction. Drawn from the activities of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), especially its Aerospace Technical Committee, the book provides details on the majority of sensors for aircraft and many for spacecraft, satellites, and space probes. It is written by an international team of twelve authors representing four countries from Eastern and Western Europe and North America, all with considerable experience in aerospace sensor and systems design. Highlights include: • coverage of aerospace vehicle classification, specific design criteria, and the requirements of onboard systems and sensors; • reviews of airborne flight parameter sensors, weather sensors and collision avoidance devices; • discussions on the important role of inertial navigation systems (INS) and separate gyroscopic sensors for aerospace vehicle navigation and motion control; • descriptions of engine parameter information collection systems, including fuel quantity and consumption sensors, pressure pick-ups, tachometers, vibration control, and temperature sensors; and • descriptions and examples of sensor integration.

Book Synopsis The Role of Small Satellites in NASA and NOAA Earth Observation Programs by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Role of Small Satellites in NASA and NOAA Earth Observation Programs written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-05-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote observations of Earth from space serve an extraordinarily broad range of purposes, resulting in extraordinary demands on those at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and elsewhere who must decide how to execute them. In research, Earth observations promise large volumes of data to a variety of disciplines with differing needs for measurement type, simultaneity, continuity, and long-term instrument stability. Operational needs, such as weather forecasting, add a distinct set of requirements for continual and highly reliable monitoring of global conditions. The Role of Small Satellites in NASA and NOAA Earth Observation Programs confronts these diverse requirements and assesses how they might be met by small satellites. In the past, the preferred architecture for most NASA and NOAA missions was a single large spacecraft platform containing a sophisticated suite of instruments. But the recognition in other areas of space research that cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and robustness may be enhanced by using small spacecraft has raised questions about this philosophy of Earth observation. For example, NASA has already abandoned its original plan for a follow-on series of major platforms in its Earth Observing System. This study finds that small spacecraft can play an important role in Earth observation programs, providing to this field some of the expected benefits that are normally associated with such programs, such as rapid development and lower individual mission cost. It also identifies some of the programmatic and technical challenges associated with a mission composed of small spacecraft, as well as reasons why more traditional, larger platforms might still be preferred. The reasonable conclusion is that a systems-level examination is required to determine the optimum architecture for a given scientific and/or operational objective. The implied new challenge is for NASA and NOAA to find intra- and interagency planning mechanisms that can achieve the most appropriate and cost-effective balance among their various requirements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space Remote Sensing Systems: An Introduction discusses the space remote sensing system, which is a modern high-technology field developed from earth sciences, engineering, and space systems technology for environmental protection, resource monitoring, climate prediction, weather forecasting, ocean measurement, and many other applications. This book consists of 10 chapters. Chapter 1 describes the science of the atmosphere and the earth's surface. Chapter 2 discusses spaceborne radiation collector systems, while Chapter 3 focuses on space detector and CCD systems. The passive space optical radiometer and spectrometer systems are presented in Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 6 elaborates the passive space microwave radiometer systems. Chapters 7 and 8 deliberate the active space lidar systems, active space synthetic aperture radar, and scatterometer systems. The low-earth-orbit large satellite systems and applications are covered in Chapter 9. The last chapter considers the geosynchronous-orbit large satellite systems. This publication is written for scientists, engineers, and seniors or graduate students who are interested in the field of space remote sensing systems.
