The first time I remained here four months, thoroughly dissatisfied with myself, and glad to make my escape, but now that I return somewhat older and more mature and settled, I see the fault lay in myself, for woe to him who comes to Paris too young, and without any fixed aim in View, his head filled with vague notions and his pockets empty! Now I see Paris calmly - in com pany with a dear friend, Whose presence aids me in feeling more freshly and vividly all my impressions of the former visit. Here are those of the first day as they can be rendered by a weary brain and a pen borrowed from the landlord. But for this lacking I am not sorry, and I continue to believe that it is good at times to turn from the incessant making Of mills and goods and railways and money, from the noise Of tramcars and automobiles, from the sensations of politics and politicians, from the bruits Of the latest scandal or war or catastrophe, and give a little time to contem plating the stars, or watching the bees, or listening to the songs of the seas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greville, or a Season in Paris, Vol. 3 of 3 Greville quitted the Abbey, - a spot to which he hall conceived the strongest aversion. A few days before, on arriving there, he had contemplated the beauties of the place with triumph; as a scene to which he was about to transplant the persons dearest to him, to whom the delicious home scenery of an English park, with its majestic timber and grassy glades, must afford a new sense of enjoyment. But now, in his altered state of feeling, he threw himself into a corner of the carriage, as though eager to shut out all view of a place to which he was attached by ties fraught with dishonour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris Sees It Through: A Diary, 1914-1919 On the other hand, if the universe is an accident, and emanates from no mind at all, this life is all we have, and we cling to it. We do our best to make safe the thing we believe in. This world for the materialist; the next for the devout; the inner world for the thinker and the emotionalist. The human spirit may be all that it is said to be a dauntless and heroic affair, equal to facing any odds. The human body, however, which is the casket of the spirit, is unfortunately softer than the greater part of inanimate substances. Had it been harder than the earth, than iron, than steel, we might have made a show of safety in our arrangements. But there would have remained lightning and ice and fog, and the possibility of meteorites, which can go to rest in a granite mountain like a fat man jumping into a feather-bed. The fact is, we are searching for a thing we cannot conceive. Safety is as much outside our conscious ness as some star of which we have never heard. We cannot conceive, by the highest efforts of our brains, what it would be like for one instant to have the esh of our body safe in this world or the comfort of our spirit assured in the next. The sensation, if it were imparted to us by a. Miracle, would probably kill us. The nearest approach to it known to us is the ecstasy of a revivalist meeting, which usually bears an ample aftermath of lunacy on the one hand and crime on the other. Those who are strong enough to survive the feeling of being saved without losing their mental balance quite frequently go and commit some Specially vile kind of offence. Book excerpt: Called “remarkable” (The Wall Street Journal) and “an ambitious, colossal debut novel” (Publishers Weekly), Helen DeWitt’s The Last Samurai is back in print at last Helen DeWitt’s 2000 debut, The Last Samurai, was “destined to become a cult classic” (Miramax). The enterprising publisher sold the rights in twenty countries, so “Why not just, ‘destined to become a classic?’” (Garth Risk Hallberg) And why must cultists tell the uninitiated it has nothing to do with Tom Cruise? Sibylla, an American-at-Oxford turned loose on London, finds herself trapped as a single mother after a misguided one-night stand. High-minded principles of child-rearing work disastrously well. J. S. Mill (taught Greek at three) and Yo Yo Ma (Bach at two) claimed the methods would work with any child; when these succeed with the boy Ludo, he causes havoc at school and is home again in a month. (Is he a prodigy, a genius? Readers looking over Ludo’s shoulder find themselves easily reading Greek and more.) Lacking male role models for a fatherless boy, Sibylla turns to endless replays of Kurosawa’s masterpiece Seven Samurai. But Ludo is obsessed with the one thing he wants and doesn’t know: his father’s name. At eleven, inspired by his own take on the classic film, he sets out on a secret quest for the father he never knew. He’ll be punched, sliced, and threatened with retribution. He may not live to see twelve. Or he may find a real samurai and save a mother who thinks boredom a fate worse than death.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays focuses on a subject largely neglected in Nabokovian criticism—the importance and significance of the five senses in Vladimir Nabokov’s work, poetics, politics and aesthetics. This text analyzes the crucial role of the author’s synesthesia and multilingualism in relation to the five senses, as well as the sensual and erotic dimensions of sensoriality in his works. Each chapter provides a highly focused and sometimes provocative approach to the unique role that sensory perceptions play in the shaping and narrating of Nabokov’s memories and in his creative process.

Book excerpt: Both a vital theoretical work and a fine illustration of the principles and practice of sensory ethnography, this much anticipated translation is destined to figure as a major catalyst in the expanding field of sensory studies.Drawing on his own fieldwork in Brazil and Japan and a wide range of philosophical, literary and cinematic sources, the author outlines his vision for a ‘modal anthropology’. François Laplantine challenges the primacy accorded to ‘sign’ and ‘structure’ in conventional social science research, and redirects attention to the tonalities and rhythmic intensities of different ways of living. Arguing that meaning, sensation and sociality cannot be considered separately, he calls for a 'politics of the sensible' and a complete reorientation of our habitual ways of understanding reality. The book also features an introduction to the sensory and social thought of François Laplantine by the editor of the Sensory Studies series, David Howes.

This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close examination of ancient, medieval, and modern Lives of the saints, Ann W. Astell demonstrates how the historical transformation of hagiography as a genre correlates with similar changes in biblical studies. Christian hagiography flourished from the fourth to the fifteenth centuries, illuminating the gospel through the overlapping forms of exempla and vita. Originally, the Lives of the saints were understood as hermeneutical extensions of the Bible—God authors the saint, just as God authors the divinely inspired scriptures. During the medieval period, a sense of dual authorship between God and the cooperating saint developed, paralleling the Scholastic impulse to assign greater agency to the human writers of scripture. Then, in the sixteenth century, powerful new anxieties about historical truth pushed hagiography aside for biography, its successor. Drawing on her expertise in the history of Christianity and biblical exegesis, Astell convincingly shows how this radical shift in hagiography’s status—the loss of the literal, allegorical, tropological, and anagogical senses of the Lives—serves as a bellwether for modern biblical reception.
