The project is to investigate the phenomena associated with the loss-of-coolant accident in a pressurized water reactor system. Experimental information that will aid in predictive code development and evaluation is to be obtained with a test system that is designed to model a large pressurized water reactor system. Blowdown tests have been performed with systems that consisted of a simulated vessel only, and the simulated vessel with an operating primary loop. Tests are to be performed with systems that will include core heat, emergency core coolant injection, and more than one operating primary loop. Test information will be obtained that is expected to aid in defining blowdown phenomena such as core fluid availability, system mass leak rate, and the interaction between the system coolant and the emergency core coolant.

Book excerpt: This document presents the results of a decompression experiment (Test 845) performed in the Semiscale Blowdown and Emergency Core Cooling (ECC) Project as a part of the Water Reactor safety Program of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The data are intended to provide a basis for assessing and measuring the maturity of analytical codes used to predict the response of pressurized water reactors to decompression and ECC injection for a hypothetical major loss-of-coolant accident. The substantial and significant differences between a large nuclear reactor and the semiscale apparatus, and the differences in the related phenomenologies during postulated loss-of-coolant accidents, make invalid any direct extrapolation of the results from this test to a reactor. This test was intended only for purposes of analysis methods development and evaluation. Semiscale Test 845 was initiated by a cold leg (inlet piping) break of a system that includes both a single operating loop and a vessel with a simulated (electrically heated) reactor core, and was the first semiscale test in which ECC was injected. The objective of this test was to obtain initial experimental information relative to the effects of ECC injection on cooling fluid availability to a heated core and on primary decompression phenomena. The purpose of this report is to present the data from Semiscale Test 845 in sufficient detail to be directly usable by those groups engaged in loss-of-coolant accident analysis for pressurized water reactors. The results presented include pressure, fluid and material temperatures, fluid density, flow rates, and fluid quality as functions of time.

Book excerpt: Selected experiment data from tests performed during the Semiscale Mod-1 baseline emergency core cooling test series (Series 4) are analyzed. The analysis is confined primarily to data that have been analyzed with respect to the significant phenomena that occur in the Mod-1 system during the blowdown, refill, and reflood phases of an integral blowdown-reflood test. Analyses concerned with the blowdown phase include an evaluation of the effect of unpowered rods on the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) behavior of adjacent rods during blowdown. The analysis concerned specifically with the refill and reflood phases of the tests includes evaluations of the downcomer countercurrent flow and hot wall phenomena, the effect of accumulator nitrogen injection on the overall system response, and the downcomer mass depletion phenomena. The corresponding effect of each of these phenomena on the core thermal response is also evaluated.
