Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seminary Notes on Recent Historical Literature The following Seminary Notes on Recent Historical Literature represent some of the first fruits of cooperative reading and reviewing by Johns Hopkins graduate students in their own department of History and Politics. Many of these notices have been elsewhere printed and are here reproduced in a somewhat abridged form. It is hoped that this collection of student-reviews and digests may be of suggestive service in the development of other and better annual reports of American contributions to historical science. Such reports or annotated bibliographies are much needed by students and readers of history, as well as by librarians and book-buyers. The present system of reviewing as represented by our popular magazines, weekly journals, and daily newspapers, while useful in a way to the book-trade and to the general reader, is very unsatisfactory to the specialist. Such notices are written from a great variety of motives. Some reviews are manifestly in the interest of science and good literature. Others are in the interest of publishing houses and the makers of text-books. Still others are for the encouragement of authors. Many are for the amusement and private satisfaction of critics, who sometimes embrace the opportunity of displaying their own superior wisdom and of indicating what clever books they could write if it were worth their while. Whatever the motives of the review and of the reviewer, he and his observations are soon lost sight of in the downward current of periodical literature. Few people ever take the trouble to look up that drift-wood called "back numbers" for the sake of book-notices. In order to give any real historic life and usefulness to literary decisions, the best judgments should be codified under generic titles. What Sydney Smith called "the trade of book-reviewing" must be more and more specialized in various departments of literary criticism. We should have in this country either an annual digest of the best opinions on all the books that have appeared in the various classes of publication, or at least a complete bibliography topically arranged. The Revue Historique in Paris set the world a good example, in 1876, in beginning to publish systematic reports concerning the progress of historical literature in various countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Sage Library of the Theological Seminary at New Brunswick Bengel, Ernesti, Semler, Beck. In this century the literature of the subject has expanded enormously, especially in the hands of the Germans, the great modern book-makers. These subjects, in connection with Biblical introductions, Jewish antiquities, and Biblical theology, have attracted so much attention of late, both in discovery and controversy, that special care has been given to them, with the result of having a complement of the best authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Theology: Lectures Delivered in Chicago Theological Seminary The lectures which compose this volume were delivered in April 1894 to the Chicago Theological Seminary, and are published at the request of the Faculty of that Institution. They do not amount to a system of theology, but the writer believes they are consistent with each other, and would find their place in a system. They are printed as they were delivered, with one exception. The ninth lecture, which excited considerable discussion in the circles to which it was first addressed, has been re-written; not with the view of retracting or qualifying anything, but in order, as far as possible, to obviate misconception, and secure a readier acceptance for what the writer thinks true ideas on the authority of Scripture. The notes have been added, partly to justify the statements made in the lectures as to the opinions of various theologians and schools, partly to acknowledge the writer's obligations to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers Read Before the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, on Resigning His Office as Professor of Theology in the Western Theological Seminary: With a Few Notes, Since Appended Unfounded reports of an injurious character, circulated in regard to the author's conduct, east and west of the moun tains, have induced him to publish these papers for the use of his friends. Many heard them read before the General Assembly, and many others did not. He thinks, and so he has been told, that a perusal of them will be a gratification to his friends. It is a satisfaction to the writer to know that not a single fact stated in his papers was disputed. Had any been denied, he was prepared, as he observes in the close of his communi cation, to furnish additional evidence. It was unnecessary. In consequence of something in the report of the Board of Directors, he was induced to read the two first papers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus and Notes of the Course of Systematic and Polemic Theology Taught in Union Theological Seminary, Virginia The main design, next to the establishment of Divine Truth, has been to furn ish students in divinity, pastors, and intelligent lay-christians, a view of the whole field of Christian theology, without swelling the work to a size too unwieldy and costly for the purposes of instruction. Every head of divinity has received at least brief attention. The discussion is usually compact. The reader is requested to bear in mind, that the work is only styled Syllabus and Notes of a course in theology. The full expansion or exhaustive illustration of topics has not been promised. Hence unless the reader has already a knowledge of these topics derived from copious pre vions study, he should not expect to master these discussions by a cursory reading. He is candidly advertised that many parts will remain but partially appreciated, unless he shall find himself willing either to read enough of the authorities referred to in the Syllabus, to place him at the proper point of vievy or else to ponder the outline of the arguments by the efforts of mature and vigorous thought for himself, and thus\ fill out the full body of discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln University, College and Theological Seminary: Biographical Catalogue, 1918 Several new features should be noticed. The students are ar ranged not alphabetically (except in the general index at the back), nor by year of matriculation, lbut in their proper classes, although in some cases, especially. With the first few classes, it has been impossible, owing to lack of records, to make an accurate classification. The classes have been divided into two parts, those who completed the course and received a degree, and those who did not. In the case of the latter the letter b is printed after their names in the general index at the back. A compact system of abbreviations has been adopted which it is thought will 'be self explanatory. 'the biographical notes are printed once with each name, viz., where it is: mentioned in the department, college or theological s-eminary, first attended. Thanks are given to the professors, alumu1, and students who have helped in the compilation of the present volume. An effort has been made to make everything as accurate as. Possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Biographical Catalogue: The Western Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1827-1927 A diligent search was made for the whereabouts of men whose addresses had been lost. In some instances the quest was successful, but more often no trace could be discovered. The failure usually occurred in the record of those who had followed teaching or had gone into business or had demitted the ministry for some other reason. We wish to thank the stated clerks of Presbyteries, the registrars of colleges and seminaries, and the alumni who have assisted the compiler in tracing graduates and former students whose addresses were lost. In a good many instances the assistance thus rendered has added to the accuracy and completeness of the record. Before the reader attempts to use the Biographical cata logue, he is asked to note the directions on p. 28 and the list of abbreviations on p. 388. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pedagogical Seminary, Vol. 28: A Quarterly International Record of Educational Literature Institutions and Progress One of the first things which strikes the observer of children and adults alike is what seems a universal tendency to do as others do, to imitate. Everywhere may be seen examples of action apparently done not because the individual has himself decided that such an action fits the particular situation but because such and such another individual is performing or has performed the same action. The sheep which turns aside in the road will, if the man or dog in charge is not alert, take with it half the flock before it can be turned back. The boy coming home from school who throws a stone at a cat will be joined by the rest of the boys who are passing. The lady who goes into a store, enquires anxiously what "is being worn" and, however her heart is set upon a garment of a particular kind, she will instantly reject it if it be "out of fashion." If the members of my "set" wear their trousers turned up, mine are turned up. If they wear them down, mine are turned down. If they eat asparagus with their fingers, I eat mine with my fingers; if with a fork, I do the same. If they rise when the Governor of the State begins a speech, I rise, even though I am ignorant of the custom. And, almost automatically, I sit when they sit. It is almost platitudinous to say that imitation plays a most profound part in our relations with our fellow men, and is responsible in a very large degree for the difference between the hermit and the member of a state. Other factors undoubtedly enter in, but it is certain that not a small part of the effect of our fellow men upon us is due to the fact that they serve as copies for our own actions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Philosophy and Theology The essays which follow are, as the title denotes, studies, which, from time to time, during the years of professional life, have engaged the writers attention, and occupied his most thoughtful hours. Many of them have been already published in the Bibliotheca Sacra, and elsewhere. The themes discussed are how ever, for the most part, of permanent interest; and as such, the discussions have a value as contributions to philosophical and theological science. For the con venience of many, especially my former pupils in Col lege and Seminary, these essays are now gathered into a volume, with such notes as seemed to be required.
