Book excerpt: This book examines spirituality in Singapore, showing how important the city state is for understanding contemporary global configurations of urban space, religion, and spirituality. Joanne Punzo Waghorne highlights how the formal religious spaces-temples, churches, and mosques-have been confined to allotted sites on the map of Singapore, whereas various “spiritual” organizations, particularly of Hindu origins and headed by a guru, still continue to operate as “societies” classified by the government with other “clubs.” These unconventional religiosities are not confined but ironically make their own places, meeting in ostensive secular venues: high-rise flats, malls, businesses, and community centers, thus existing in the overall space of religion, commerce, and the state. The book argues that State of Singapore also operates between the secular and the religious, constructing an overarching spatial regime that both accommodates and yet rivals the alternate spheres that spiritual movements construct under its umbrella. Both spatial configurations challenge the presumed relationships between myth and reality, religion and commerce, the ethereal and the concrete, the sacred and the secular, on the levels of self, community, and polity. Singapore, now deemed a model for urban development in Asia, also offers an understanding of a new post-secularity and perhaps reveals where the urbanized world is headed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emplotment of India in the Western literary imagination. Basing her discussion on the reception of an emblematic Sanskrit text, Kālidāsa's Śākuntala, Figueira studies how and why this text was distorted in translation, criticism, and adaptation, and isolates the linguistic errors and cultural distortions that can be grouped into trends and patterns. The unique situation of Śākuntala's reception affords the author the opportunity to look at the way Europeans projected their cultural needs upon India. The author puts into perspective an entire social and intellectual history of Europe's encounter with Indian culture, an examination of its cultural and political consequences, and a philosophical inquiry into differences between Eastern and Western world views.

Book excerpt: Over the years, Hindus have slowly forgotten the amazing treasures that are hidden in the land of Bharath. The resilience of Hindu mind; suppleness of its soul; suppleness of Hindu character; gracefulness of Hindu cultures; equanimity of Hindu moral compass; gracefulness of Hindu traditions; the inner strength of Hindu scriptures; sacredness of rivers, mountains, animals and trees; the genuineness of the simple living and high thinking; the astounding principles of ahimsa - belief in nonviolence, grandeur of the principle of Vasudaika Kutumbam; the potency of spiritual life and glory that was and is Bharath; and all-embracing live and let live principles are the gems that are essential for the survival of Hinduism and human race itself. The richness of Bharath was clouded by ignorance, her glory seared with communalism, enveloped with the fog of secularism. The Hindu pride was tarnished with greed and smeared with Macaulyism. The future of Bharath looks bleak, depressing and miserable. Bharath Mata is attacked from all quarters. She is not even spared by vocal Hindu secularists, liberals and communists. Media has created havoc by denouncing the Hindus, Saints and Hindu organizations and leaders. Beneath every Hindu, there is the presence of divinity, dharma, spirituality and ahimsa. Somehow, he has forsaken the ancient richness and allowed it to be smeared with greed, name, fame, power, position, wealth and recognition that only satiate the present not the future. Divine intervention can only reverse the trend and malaise. Hinduism is being attacked by selected Hindus as well as the two Abrahamic religions. Patience, tolerance and ahimsa made Hinduism a defenseless religion in the world. It has become a soft target with no retaliation or any plan to protect itself from enemies both within and without. Unlike other two major religions, Hinduism does not preach for expansion, does not believe in terrorism and does not practice deceptive techniques to convert people; nor do they believe in the expansion through conversion techniques. Their emphasis is on the development of the individual, self-improvement and enlightenment.

Book excerpt: Riches and knowledge of India have attracted many foreign invasions. Each time Indian culture has emerged stronger. Like a great melting pot, India has assimilated invading cultures and yet maintained its glorious core. What are the strengths of Indian culture that have enabled it to survive for thousands of years? Is it merely the learning from mistakes of previous generations that shaped Indian culture or were there persistent scientific endeavors that shaped Indian society? What kind of discoveries were Indians trying to make when three thousand years ago they were dealing with such large numbers as "1,971,956,574 years"? How did ancient Indians figure out that if you pierced the globe and emerged on the opposite side of globe from India, you will find an advanced culture (Americas)? What is the driving force behind the predominance of vegetarianism in India? What enabled them to perform plastic surgery more than two thousand years ago? Did they know the role of the spleen in driving the characteristic red pigmentation of blood? This book tries to answer these questions. The intent of this book is to inspire the readers to explore further and understand deeply the undercurrents of science, arts, philosophy and spirituality that have shaped the Indian culture.

Book excerpt: No religion ever remains static: it affects and is in turn affected by material reality. In this book, Sharma examines the contours of this creative tension in contemporary Hinduism. Sharma attempts to raise self-awareness of this dimension of Hinduism to an unprecedented level. In this way, he hopes, that in the context of modernization and globalization, Hindus will be able to make conscious choices that will keep their religion at the cutting edge of the contemporary world instead of the periphery.
