Book excerpt: For graduate students and research mathematicians interested in partial differential equations and who have a basic knowledge of functional analysis. Restricted to boundary value problems formed by differential operators, avoiding the use of pseudo- differential operators. Concentrates on fundamental results such as estimates for solutions in different function spaces, the Fredholm property of the problem's operator, regularity assertions, and asymptotic formulas for the solutions of near singular points. Considers the solutions in Sobolev spaces of both positive and negative orders. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are based on recent research on the phenomenon of turbulence in fluid flows collected by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications. This volume looks into the dynamical properties of the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, the equations of motion of incompressible, viscous fluid flows, in order to better understand this phenomenon. Although it is a basic issue of science, it has implications over a wide spectrum of modern technological applications. The articles offer a variety of approaches to the Navier-Stokes problems and related issues. This book should be of interest to both applied mathematicians and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph focusses on a large class of variational elliptic problems with mixed boundary conditions on domains with various corner singularities, edges, polyhedral vertices, cracks, slits. In a natural functional framework (ordinary Sobolev Hilbert spaces) Fredholm and semi-Fredholm properties of induced operators are completely characterized. By specially choosing the classes of operators and domains and the functional spaces used, precise and general results may be obtained on the smoothness and asymptotics of solutions. A new type of characteristic condition is introduced which involves the spectrum of associated operator pencils and some ideals of polynomials satisfying some boundary conditions on cones. The methods involve many perturbation arguments and a new use of Mellin transform. Basic knowledge about BVP on smooth domains in Sobolev spaces is the main prerequisite to the understanding of this book. Readers interested in the general theory of corner domains will find here a new basic theory (new approaches and results) as well as a synthesis of many already known results; those who need regularity conditions and descriptions of singularities for numerical analysis will find precise statements and also a means to obtain further one in many explicit situtations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global analysis is the analysis on manifolds. Since the middle of the sixties there exists a highly elaborated setting if the underlying manifold is compact, evidence of which can be found in index theory, spectral geometry, the theory of harmonic maps, many applications to mathematical physics on closed manifolds like gauge theory, Seiberg-Witten theory, etc. If the underlying manifold is open, i.e. non-compact and without boundary, then most of the foundations and of the great achievements fail. Elliptic operators are no longer Fredholm, the analytical and topological indexes are not defined, the spectrum of self-adjoint elliptic operators is no longer discrete, functional spaces strongly depend on the operators involved and the data from geometry, many embedding and module structure theorems do not hold, manifolds of maps are not defined, etc. It is the goal of this new book to provide serious foundations for global analysis on open manifolds, to discuss the difficulties and special features which come from the openness and to establish many results and applications on this basis.

Book excerpt: This book contains fourteen research papers which are expanded versions of conferences given at a meeting held in September 1996 in Cortona, Italy. The topics include blowup questions for quasilinear equations in two dimensions, time decay of waves in LP, uniqueness results for systems of conservation laws in one dimension, concentra tion effects for critical nonlinear wave equations, diffraction of nonlin ear waves, propagation of singularities in scattering theory, caustics for semi-linear oscillations. Other topics linked to microlocal analysis are Sobolev embedding theorems in Weyl-Hormander calculus, local solv ability for pseudodifferential equations, hypoellipticity for highly degen erate operators. The book also contains a result on uniqueness for the Cauchy problem under partial analyticity assumptions and an article on the regularity of solutions for characteristic initial-boundary value problems. On each topic listed above, one will find new results as well as a description of the state of the art. Various methods related to nonlinear geometrical optics are a transversal theme of several articles. Pseu dodifferential techniques are used to tackle classical PDE problems like Cauchy uniqueness. We are pleased to thank the speakers for their contributions to the meeting: Serge Alinhac, Mike Beals, Alberto Bressan, Jean-Yves Chemin, Christophe Cheverry, Daniele Del Santo, Nils Dencker, Patrick Gerard, Lars Hormander, John Hunter, Richard Melrose, Guy Metivier, Yoshinori Morimoto, and Tatsuo Nishitani. The meeting was made possible in part by the financial support of a European commission pro gram, "Human capital and mobility CHRX-CT94-044."

Book excerpt: This volume contains expanded versions of lecture notes of CIMPA's school held in Lanzhou in July 2004. These texts offer a detailed survey, including the most recent advances, of some topics in analysis of partial differential equations arising from physics, mechanics and geometry such as Korteweg-de Vries equation, harmonic maps, Birkhoff normal form and KAM theorem for infinite dimensional dynamical systems, vorticity of Euler equation, semi-classical analysis of Schrodinger and Dirac equations, and limiting situations of semilinear elliptic equations. They are mainly aimed at students and young researchers interested in these subjects.

Book excerpt: On the 17th and 18th of June 2002, the Laboratory of Mathematics of Nantes University (supported by CNRS) organized a meeting to celebrate the memory of Jean Leray. At this time, the laboratory was named Laboratoire Jean Leray. This volume begins with the lecture by Yves Meyer, which relates the scientific life of Jean Leray. The lectures that follow illustrate most aspects of the scientific works of J. Leray and show the wide spectrum of his work. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in differential equations, geometry, and topology.
