Book Synopsis Sur les Groupes Hyperboliques d’après Mikhael Gromov by : Etienne Ghys
Download or read book Sur les Groupes Hyperboliques d’après Mikhael Gromov written by Etienne Ghys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of hyperbolic groups has its starting point in a fundamental paper by M. Gromov, published in 1987. These are finitely generated groups that share important properties with negatively curved Riemannian manifolds. This monograph is intended to be an introduction to part of Gromov's theory, giving basic definitions, some of the most important examples, various properties of hyperbolic groups, and an application to the construction of infinite torsion groups. The main theme is the relevance of geometric ideas to the understanding of finitely generated groups. In addition to chapters written by the editors, contributions by W. Ballmann, A. Haefliger, E. Salem, R. Strebel, and M. Troyanov are also included. The book will be particularly useful to researchers in combinatorial group theory, Riemannian geometry, and theoretical physics, as well as post-graduate students interested in these fields.

Book Synopsis Quaternion Orders, Quadratic Forms, and Shimura Curves by : Montserrat Alsina
Download or read book Quaternion Orders, Quadratic Forms, and Shimura Curves written by Montserrat Alsina and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shimura curves are a far-reaching generalization of the classical modular curves. They lie at the crossroads of many areas, including complex analysis, hyperbolic geometry, algebraic geometry, algebra, and arithmetic. This monograph presents Shimura curves from a theoretical and algorithmic perspective. The main topics are Shimura curves defined over the rational number field, the construction of their fundamental domains, and the determination of their complex multiplicationpoints. The study of complex multiplication points in Shimura curves leads to the study of families of binary quadratic forms with algebraic coefficients and to their classification by arithmetic Fuchsian groups. In this regard, the authors develop a theory full of new possibilities that parallels Gauss'theory on the classification of binary quadratic forms with integral coefficients by the action of the modular group. This is one of the few available books explaining the theory of Shimura curves at the graduate student level. Each topic covered in the book begins with a theoretical discussion followed by carefully worked-out examples, preparing the way for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serge Lang (1927-2005) was one of the top mathematicians of our time. He was born in Paris in 1927, and moved with his family to California, where he graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1943. He subsequently graduated from California Institute of Technology in 1946, and received a doctorate from Princeton University in 1951 before holding faculty positions at the University of Chicago and Columbia University (1955-1971). At the time of his death he was professor emeritus of Mathematics at Yale University. An excellent writer, Lang has made innumerable and invaluable contributions in diverse fields of mathematics. He was perhaps best known for his work in number theory and for his mathematics textbooks, including the influential Algebra. He was also a member of the Bourbaki group. He was honored with the Cole Prize by the American Mathematical Society as well as with the Prix Carrière by the French Academy of Sciences. These five volumes collect the majority of his research papers, which range over a variety of topics.
