Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Scattering Resonances by : Semyon Dyatlov

This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering resonances generalize bound states/eigenvalues for systems in which energy can scatter to infinity. A typical resonance has a rate of oscillation (just as a bound state does) and a rate of decay. Although the notion is intrinsically dynamical, an elegant mathematical formulation comes from considering meromorphic continuations of Green's functions. The poles of these meromorphic continuations capture physical information by identifying the rate of oscillation with the real part of a pole and the rate of decay with its imaginary part. An example from mathematics is given by the zeros of the Riemann zeta function: they are, essentially, the resonances of the Laplacian on the modular surface. The Riemann hypothesis then states that the decay rates for the modular surface are all either or . An example from physics is given by quasi-normal modes of black holes which appear in long-time asymptotics of gravitational waves. This book concentrates mostly on the simplest case of scattering by compactly supported potentials but provides pointers to modern literature where more general cases are studied. It also presents a recent approach to the study of resonances on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The last two chapters are devoted to semiclassical methods in the study of resonances.

Book Synopsis Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues by : Fioralba Cakoni
Download or read book Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues written by Fioralba Cakoni and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse scattering theory is a major theme of applied mathematics, and it has applications to such diverse areas as medical imaging, geophysical exploration, and nondestructive testing. The inverse scattering problem is both nonlinear and ill-posed, thus presenting particular problems in the development of efficient inversion algorithms. Although linearized models continue to play an important role in many applications, an increased need to focus on problems in which multiple scattering effects cannot be ignored has led to a central role for nonlinearity, and the possibility of collecting large amounts of data over limited regions of space means that the ill-posed nature of the inverse scattering problem has become a problem of central importance.? Initial efforts to address the nonlinear and the ill-posed nature of the inverse scattering problem focused on nonlinear optimization methods. While efficient in many situations, strong a priori information is necessary for their implementation. This problem led to a qualitative approach to inverse scattering theory in which the amount of a priori information is drastically reduced, although at the expense of only obtaining limited information about the values of the constitutive parameters. This qualitative approach (the linear sampling method, the factorization method, the theory of transmission eigenvalues, etc.) is the theme of Inverse Scattering Theory and Transmission Eigenvalues.? The authors begin with a basic introduction to the theory, then proceed to more recent developments, including a detailed discussion of the transmission eigenvalue problem; present the new generalized linear sampling method in addition to the well-known linear sampling and factorization methods; and in order to achieve clarification of presentation, focus on the inverse scattering problem for scalar homogeneous media.?
Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling in Optical Science by : Gang Bao
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling in Optical Science written by Gang Bao and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses recent developments in mathematical modeling in three areas of optical science: diffractive optics, photonic band gap structures, and waveguides. Particular emphasis is on the formulation of mathematical models and the design and analysis of new computational approaches. The book contains cutting-edge discourses on emerging technology in optics that provides significant challenges and opportunities for applied mathematicians, researchers, and engineers. Each of the three topics is presented through a series of survey papers to provide a broad overview focusing on the mathematical models. Chapters present model problems, physical principles, mathematical and computational approaches, and engineering applications corresponding to each of the three areas. Although some of the subject matter is classical, the topics presented are new and represent the latest developments in their respective fields.
Book Synopsis Pseudo-Differential Operators by : Hans G. Feichtinger
Download or read book Pseudo-Differential Operators written by Hans G. Feichtinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudo-differential operators were initiated by Kohn, Nirenberg and Hörmander in the sixties of the last century. Beside applications in the general theory of partial differential equations, they have their roots also in the study of quantization first envisaged by Hermann Weyl thirty years earlier. Thanks to the understanding of the connections of wavelets with other branches of mathematical analysis, quantum physics and engineering, such operators have been used under different names as mathematical models in signal analysis since the last decade of the last century. The volume investigates the mathematics of quantization and signals in the context of pseudo-differential operators, Weyl transforms, Daubechies operators, Wick quantization and time-frequency localization operators. Applications to quantization, signal analysis and the modern theory of PDE are highlighted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir attempts at a systematic study of convergence to stationary state for certain classes of degenerate diffusive equations, taking the general form ${\frac{\partial f}{\partial t}}+ L f =0$. The question is whether and how one can overcome the degeneracy by exploiting commutators.

Download or read book Stochastic Processes in Physics and Engineering written by Sergio Albeverio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. O. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Qad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gu!ik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.
