Book excerpt: "These ten essays, originally presented at the 2005 Conference on John Milton, sponsored by Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, were selected for inclusion in this collection on the basis of merit rather than theme, focus, or critical approach. Nonetheless, they all suggest, albeit from disparate perspectives, ways in which careful attention to Milton's language, to his "reasoning words," can offer a colorful palette of choices for the contemporary reader."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The Chinese economy is growing at an unprecedented speed, and one of the emerging trends is angel investment. It is an area with tremendous potential for growth. Compared with the more mature markets in Western countries, however, angel investing in China is still at an early stage, due to a lack of incentives and insufficient policy support.By delving into existing literature on China's angel investment and conducting interviews with leading angel investors for China and abroad, Prof. Liu Manhong and Dr Wang Jiani — both scholars on and practitioners in the angel investment market — try to provide readers with a detailed picture of China's angel market: What is going on in the market? How should the government formulate relevant polices? And, perhaps more pertinently, what should investors know if they have invested in or are going to enter this market? This book will be very useful for scholars and researchers on China's angel market, as well as those 'angels' who would like to tap its full potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen generations later, the same old winding roads and blazed trails throughout the three novels lead us all back home to nostalgic dishes and the worlds from which they came. Upon arrival at the old home place, we quickly find our favorite room: Mamas kitchen. The familiar sounds of pots and pans and aromas of old-time country cooking float in and out of our senses. Suddenly, visions of chocolate pies swirled high with meringues cooling on the kitchen window sill are as clear as yesterday. The sizzling sounds of Mama frying chicken on the old wood-stove remind us that her kitchen offered southern hospitality at its best. The trip down memory lane of days gone by rekindles the true meaning of Home Sweet Home. As we stop and reminisce, hot tears blur our vision and we ask ourselves where did all the years go?

Book excerpt: "Will China be able to preserve the momentum of its economic reform in the post Deng Xiaoping era? Will her rising regionalism lead to internal chaos and warlordism? Is China's central government capable of acquiring the much needed policy instruments to maintain macroeconomic stability? This book seeks to answer these questions by adopting the Public Choice approach to analyse the complex ways in which China's political processes affect economic outcomes during its transition towards the market." "The author describes how macro-level policy initiatives affect the behaviour of micro-level actors such as households, enterprises, and localities, and how micro-level behaviour changes in large numbers become unorganised yet powerful collective actions, which in turn send strong signals to macro-level policy makers and thus change the state's policy orientations and result in new state-society relationships. The author argues that new incentives are thereby created and new interest groups are generated to sustain those changes and demand further reform, thus making the market transition an irreversible process."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: An eye-opening deep dive into the sources and consequences of how China has financed it’s rise to global economic prominence In The Red Dream: The Chinese Communist Party and the Financial Deterioration of China, veteran finance executive Carl Walter uses his unique experience in Chinese finance to deepen his exploration of how the Chinese Communist Party finances its obsession with GDP growth and social control. Inevitably the party’s own financial health is being severely weakened and China’s future over the next decades put in doubt. You’ll also find: A discussion of the financial power of local governments and the Ponzi scheme created by their sale of land use rights How China’s entry into the World Trade Organization gave rise to today’s China How the party and China’s regulators enable banks to present outstanding performance metrics An exploration of the party’s financial assets and liabilities since 1979 Examples of financial crisis management and related costs incurred by China and the US A look at Japan’s experience as a potential guide for China future development An essential read for anyone interested in international economics, geopolitics, and finance, The Read Dream will also earn a place in the hands of finance professionals, bankers, policymakers, corporate strategists, and investors.

This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: This work provides a new insight into china's township and village enterprises (TVEs). It views the governance structure of TVEs as effectively combining the comparative advantage of local government officials in external management and of dual firm managers in internal management to overcome imperfections in both market and government during the transitional period. Through extensive field investigation analysis and case studies, this work shows that the governance structure of TVEs has been evolving during the past fifteen years. To adapt to the changing environment, TVEs have continuously innovated firm contractual form from a government official dominant fixed-wage form to a partnership style profit-sharing form, then to a privatization oriented fixed-rent form. This work develops a complete model to explain how the central government’s partial reform efforts in market liberalization have become the driving force to induce the contractual form innovation, and to explicate how heterogeneity in firms’ technical structures and in local economic settings may affect local government’s decisions regarding contractual form innovation. Using the author’s unique data set, the model simulations predict that the development in the whole market system will result in the diffusion of contractual form innovation and lead to an 'induced privatization’ in this sector. The following empirical studies show this to be a powerful prediction and the progress toward such ’induced privatization' can be expected in China in near future. This research work provides a rich empirical study on China’s institutional transition towards a market system. It explains how a bottom-up endogenous, instead of top-down exogenous, property rights reform can be realized in transitional economies. This work will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and students in economics, economic development and institutional economics - and especially for those interested in research.
