Department of the Interior in 1916, administration passed to civilian hands. Today the visitors' contacts with this Service are largely through uni formed park rangers and naturalists, whose duties are to protect, preserve and interpret the park under the supervision of the park superintendent. The story of the formation of Yosem ite Valley goes back some two hundred million years when this land was beneath the sea. As it subsequently arose out of the sea it was covered with layers of sediments many thousands of feet thick, the remnants of which are seen today as greatly changed rocks in the foothills and on some of the park's highest peaks. The granites which now make up most of Yosemite National Park's rocks welled up underneath this old sea deposit as molten rock which cooled slowly as the sea deposits eroded away. As the Sierra tilted westward through three stages of uplift, rivers established courses down this slope wearing successively deeper valleys into the granite. About one mil lion years ago the third and last deep and steepsided V -shaped river valley was invaded at separate times by three ice age glaciers which carved the valley into its present U-shaped form. The first two glaciers were 3000 to 4000 feet deep and extended as far as El Portal. The third and last glacier, filling only about a third of the depth of the valley, drop ped its load of rocks and debris at a point between El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall. This made a dam which backed up the water from the melting ice to form Ancient Lake Yosemite, miles long and perhaps as much as two thousand feet deep in the area of Camp Curry. As the lake filled with sediment the present level floor of the valley came into being. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yosemite: A Guide to the Yosemite National Park, California Nor did Yosemite disappoint Emerson: This val ley is the only place that comes up to the brag about it, and exceeds it, he said. The philosopher's journal haltingly records: In Yosemite, grandeur of these mountains perhaps unmatched in the globe; for here they strip themselves like athletes for exhibition and stand perpendicular granite walls, showing their entire height, and wearing a liberty cap of snow on the head. Emerson's admiration must have pleased Muir, whose life seemed predicated on the eastern sage's dictum: We must trust the perfection of thecreation so far as to believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things can satisfy. He was the first Chief Naturalist and first Chief Forester of the United States National Park Service. Hall graduated in 1917 from the University of California with a degree in forestry. He joined the then-infant National Park Service as a ranger in Sequoia National Park. His Park Service career was then interrupted by military service in France during World War I. From 1920 to 1923, he served as the first Park Naturalist of Yosemite National Park, where he established innovative interpretative programs, founded the Yosemite Museum Association, made geological models and native crafts, mounted natural history specimens, and edited the seminal Handbook of Yosemite National Park, published in 1921. Hall left the Park Service in 1938 to operate concessions in Mesa Verde National Park. Later he worked as a consultant in park design and interpretation and wrote books on the topic.

Sierra nevada Snowy Range - has been well renamed by John Muir the Range of Light; for these mountains of California are the Illumined Mountains. Their mural walls rise to over thirteen thousand feet, and the battlemented peaks and domes fifteen hun dred feet higher in the clouds. On their flanks and lower sides are the Clark covers of the world's greatest coniferous forests; above, the High Sierra glows, amber - like in the afternoon sun of summer, graced with chains of pearl - like mountain lakes and each high peak throated with a scarf of snow. These high granite walls are here and there riven by great chasms, ice-sculptured on a mighty plan. Of these deep Sierra rifts, the greatest in sheer walls and mighty waterfalls is the Yosemite. The Yosemite National Park is in the heart of the Sierra in central - eastern California, and is now easy of access - none of the American wonderlands more so. From north and south the Southern Pacific joins the Yosemite Valley Railroad at Merced, and the latter with a journey of eighty miles up the beautiful Merced River takes the traveler to the park line El Portal. A stage ride of fo'urteen miles completes the trip to the heart of the Valley. Both at El Portal and in the Valley are such ties to civilization the year round as steam heated, electric - lighted hotels, with telephone, telegraph and express offices. There are comfortable tent villages in summer for those who would be out-of - doors; and for others, nearer kin to the wilderness and who would rest beneath bright stars, there is the whole width of the Sierra, with dry, clear summer nights and sunny days.
