Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Self-Government in Industry This book was originally planned in 1913, as a sequel to my "World of Labour." I threw it aside on the outbreak of war; but during the past year I have thoroughly revised it, and added so much new matter as to make it practically a different book. Various portions of it have appeared in various newspapers between 1914 and the present time. The largest debt I owe to the New Age, in which several whole chapters appeared in their original form. Another chapter is based upon a series of articles which appeared in the Nation. Other portions have been published in the Church Socialist, the Herald, the Highway, and the Labour Leader. I owe so many debts to friends who have helped me with ideas, suggestions and criticisms that, instead of thanking them individually, I prefer to thank them collectively in my dedication. Book Synopsis G. D. H. Cole: Selected Works by : Noel Thompson
Download or read book G. D. H. Cole: Selected Works written by Noel Thompson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 3587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. D. H. Cole was one of the foremost British socialist thinkers of the twentieth century. His literary output was immense and encompassed works of social theory, economics, political economy, economic history, social and labour history, political theory, history of thought and sociology. The books and pamphlets chosen for this edition are amongst his most significant. They are representative of the different phases of his thinking and illustrative of an acute and inquiring socialist mind as it wrestled with the formidable political and intellect challenges confronted by socialists in this most turbulent of centuries. This set re-issues 10 works of the well-known socialist thinker G. D. H. Cole and one volume of collected pamphlets, originally published between 1917 and 1956. The works in this collection encompass three critical periods of Cole’s socialist thinking: the guild socialist decade from 1913-23; the post 1929 period when his political economy was dominated by the notion of socialist economic intervention and planning, and the post-war period when, like other socialist theorists, he sought to come to terms with the particular challenges posed by the legacy of the Attlee governments, and the emergence of an affluent society. A substantial introduction by Noel Thompson places the works in their social, political and historical context and illustrates their continued relevance. Book Synopsis Social Democracy in the Making by : Gary Dorrien
Download or read book Social Democracy in the Making written by Gary Dorrien and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expansive and ambitious intellectual history of democratic socialism from one of the world’s leading intellectual historians and social ethicists The fallout from twenty years of neoliberal economic globalism has sparked a surge of interest in the old idea of democratic socialism—a democracy in which the people control the economy and government, no group dominates any other, and every citizen is free, equal, and included. With a focus on the intertwined legacies of Christian socialism and Social Democratic politics in Britain and Germany, this book traces the story of democratic socialism from its birth in the nineteenth century through the mid-1960s. Examining the tenets on which the movement was founded and how it adapted to different cultural, religious, and economic contexts from its beginnings through the social and political traumas of the twentieth century, Gary Dorrien reminds us that Christian socialism paved the way for all liberation theologies that make the struggles of oppressed peoples the subject of redemption. He argues for a decentralized economic democracy and anti-imperial internationalism.
Book Synopsis Labour's Thinkers by : Kevin Hickson
Download or read book Labour's Thinkers written by Kevin Hickson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-04-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Labour's Thinkers" seeks to examine the key ideas emphasised by the twelve individuals whom the authors judge to have made the most significant development to the political thought of the Labour Party since the 1930s. Hickson and Beech argue the Labour Party is a party of values but often not of ideas. The number of people involved in the serious discussion of ideas in the Labour Party is relatively small and intellectuals are often viewed with suspicion in what is, or was, a party set up to represent the interests of the working classes. The formulation and development of ideas are therefore crucial to understanding the outcomes of the Labour Party's internal struggles and the basis of the party's appeal. "Labour's Thinkers" highlights influential and, at times, controversial figures involved in the battle of socialist ideas in the Labour Party thus exploring concepts, such as equality, liberty, community, power, the state, ownership and patriotism.
