This book was released on 2002 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcoholism is one of the prime determinants of the behaviors of a dysfunctional family system. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of alcoholism on self-esteem, locus of control and role designations. The information obtained in this study will be used for guiding differentiated interventions that will assist in keeping the alcoholic family unit intact and improving its functioning. The study investigated: (a) the set of factors that mediate self-esteem, locus of control and family of origin level of functioning, (b) differences between adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs) and Adult Children of Non-Alcoholics (ACONAs), and (c) differences among ACOAs on self-esteem, locus of control, and role designations. The participants were members of a church in the northeastern region of the United States which offers counseling services and educational programs to its congregation. The participants are 88 African American adults aged 18-70 years who completed five survey instruments that provided information on parental drinking patterns and experiences, self-esteem, locus of control, family of origin level of functioning and demographics including role designations, gender, marital status, ethnicity, and specific information on alcohol use. The results indicated no significant difference between ACOAs and ACONAs on self-esteem and level of functioning in the family of origin. However, a significant difference was found between ACOAs and ACONAs on locus of control. There was no significant difference between ACOAs and ACONAs family functioning on self esteem and locus of control. There was no significant difference between the 'most healthy' ACOAs and the 'least healthy' ACOAs on self-esteem and locus of control. There was no significant difference between female and male ACOAs on self-esteem and locus of control; no difference between Internal and External ACOAs on self-esteem when the father was alcoholic; and no difference between hero ACOAs and scapegoat ACOAs on self-esteem and locus of control. These findings indicate that parental alcoholism mediates locus of control orientation only for. In addition, family of origin functioning is not a factor in the self-esteem or locus of control of ACOAs. Furthermore, the family of origin level of functioning does not impact the self-esteem and locus of control of ACOAs. It seems that some factor aside from family functioning is mediating self-esteem in ACOAs. The ACOAs are acquiring adaptive behaviors, high self-esteem and internal locus of control for managing their lives despite being reared in an alcoholic home environment and much the same as ACONAs. These adaptive behaviors are mediated by parental involvement, personality, and external social supports. Future investigations should examine parental behaviors, patterns and involvement with the child to determine their impact on locus of control and an investigation of other potential dysfunctional behaviors should also be considered Finally, an examination of the constructs of family or origin functioning should be considered to dispel any doubts about it as a predictor of psychological distress in children reared in an alcoholic home.

Book excerpt: Adult children of alcoholics have been identified as a population at risk for a number of disorders, including problem drinking, diminished self-esteem, disturbed interpersonal functioning, and a range of psychological problems including depression and anxiety. Recent research, however, has identified a supportive relationship with a primary caregiver as a potential protective factor for at-risk children, suggesting that attachment theory may provide a useful conceptual scheme in understanding resiliency among adult children of alcoholics. The present study examined resiliency issues and attachment style between a sample of Alanon participants and graduate students who resided with an alcohol-abusing parent prior to age 16 years as compared to those who did not reside with alcohol-abusing parents before the age of 16 years. One hundred twenty-six participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test, the Experience in Close Relationships Inventory-Revised, the Individual Protective Factors Index, and the Resiliency Scale. A series of independent sample t-tests were conducted between the adult children of alcoholic's and the non-adult children of alcoholic's on (a) classification of attachment style; and (b) individual protective factors. Furthermore, correlations were conducted between adult children of alcoholics on (a) classification of attachment style; and (b) measures of individual protective factors. Results indicated that less resilient adult children of alcoholics displayed a less secure attachment style and were characterized significantly by the anxiety attachment style. Adult children of alcoholics with lower levels of resiliency also had lower scores for the resiliency factors than adult children of non-alcoholics. However, more resilient adult children of alcoholics displayed a more secure attachment style and had higher scores for the resiliency and protective factors. This study did not find a significant difference between resiliency levels and attachment styles between male and female adult children of alcoholics.

Children of alcoholics develop patterns of behavior during childhood that carry over into adult life. As children, they were taught to cover up the family secret and suppress their feelings, and as adults, no matter what's going on, they'll always tell you they're fine. Distrust, fear of abandonment, and sensitivity to criticism are all major issues for ACOAs.

Book excerpt: Working with Children of Alcoholics was originally published when the plight of children of alcoholics was just beginning to gain widespread public attention. It was the first book to provide professionals with a direct, step-by-step approach that shows them not only what to look for when working with children but what they can do to help them. Some of the critical topics covered include identifying children of alcoholics, establishing effective childrenÆs programs, treatment strategies for children of alcoholics, life and survival in an alcoholic home, the intergenerational transmission of alcoholism, the psychological adjustment of children of alcoholics, health and safety hazards, and academic and behavioral concerns. Working with Children of Alcoholics includes extensive resources such as names of helpful organizations, periodicals, therapeutic games, and curriculum materials. The book will be of interest to social workers, public health workers, psychologists, school administrators, drug and alcohol counselors, pastoral counselors, teachers, and treatment centers. It makes an excellent supplemental text for graduate and undergraduate courses in family and community, adjustment problems of children and youth, substance abuse, human services and community problems.
