Do you want to write a diary but don't know what to write? Don't worry, this "Journal for Men" has 121 thought provoking questions that you can answer. These questions are sure to make you think about who you are and where you are heading. Why not spend a few minutes a day pondering over these questions and writing some of your thoughts down. You don't need to start from the very first page or the question, just choose a random question and start writing. Here are some of the benefits of writing a journal It gives you a power of perspective. Discover yourself through writing. Sometimes it's so much easier if it's written down. It helps to reflect on the things you have done and things you need to do in the future. Writing a journal helps clear your thoughts and feelings. Lots of problems are solved when they are written down. It will help you improve yourself. Clarify your thoughts and feelings. Help you be more confident. Rather than letting emotions being bottled up, it comes out on paper and helps you to be happier in yourself. Helps you spend your free time doing something creative rather than sitting in front of the idiot box. Relax, listen to music and write your thoughts down and be yourself. Writing about emotions in an abstract sense has a calming effect. Know yourself better. It will help you reduce stress. Sometimes strong emotions such as anger or sadness can be very painful and writing will help you overcome those emotional distresses. Those who write can recover traumatic events more quickly than those who don't. Writing helps boost the immune system. In a study conducted by Professor James Pennebaker (University of Texas in Austin) showed that those who wrote for 20 minutes a day had less visits to the doctor compared to those who didn't. For Men: Just because you are a man does not mean you can't write a journal. Men too have feelings, they too have fears, and they too have desires that need to be expressed. This "Journal For Men" has a set of questions that you can write and help discover yourself. This diary will put you on your way to self discovery.

Book excerpt: High Price is the harrowing and inspiring memoir of neuroscientist Carl Hart, a man who grew up in one of Miami’s toughest neighborhoods and, determined to make a difference as an adult, tirelessly applies his scientific training to help save real lives. Young Carl didn't see the value of school, studying just enough to keep him on the basketball team. Today, he is a cutting-edge neuroscientist—Columbia University’s first tenured African American professor in the sciences—whose landmark, controversial research is redefining our understanding of addiction. In this provocative and eye-opening memoir, Dr. Carl Hart recalls his journey of self-discovery, how he escaped a life of crime and drugs and avoided becoming one of the crack addicts he now studies. Interweaving past and present, Hart goes beyond the hype as he examines the relationship between drugs and pleasure, choice, and motivation, both in the brain and in society. His findings shed new light on common ideas about race, poverty, and drugs, and explain why current policies are failing.

The book is like a loaded gun which points at darkness so as to bring people to light. It spent its virtues on revealing the principles of self-discovery and identity. The revelation is so desperate in alleviating the pains and ordinariness of men by telling them who they are. When a man discovers himself, he becomes a supernatural man. The clothing of men with the jacket of revelation and accomplishment of great exploit is an opportunity that is reserved for men who have discovered themselves. It is only men who have discovered themselves that can take their place in God.

In Elemental Love Styles, counselor, astrologer, and interfaith minister Dr. Craig Martin gives readers the tools to identify and work with their unique roles and desires—and maximize their romantic relationships as a result. Using the language of the four elements, readers easily identify their element and embrace their deeper needs for love: creative fire, who desires recognition; intellectual Air, who flourishes with freedom; emotional and intuitive Water, who thrives with reassurance; and practical earth, who is dependable, strong, and solid. Packed with tips, tools, and examples, Elemental Love Styles, will help anyone wanting to create and maintain a deep, personal, and lasting relationship—beginning with loving yourself. Elemental Love Styles does not judge readers or their partners for being who they are, but rather opens up possibilities for compatibility and happiness. With a perspective set on love and collaboration, readers gain self-knowledge and cooperative skills, not just tools and tricks for temporary fixes. Regardless of who we are or what kind of relationship we desire, Dr. Martin affirms that we each have the opportunity for relationship happiness when we understand our own deeper need for love.

It is useful for understanding such phenomena as shamanism, mysticism, psychedelic states, spontaneous visionary experiences, and psychotic episodes. The model is also useful in explaining the dynamics of experiential psychotherapies and a variety of sociopolitical manifestations such as war and revolution. This book might have been entitled Beyond Drugs. The second part describes the principles and process of the non-pharmacological technique developed by the author and his wife, Christina, for self-exploration and for psychotherapy. Grof explores in detail the components of this technique. He describes its method, its effective mechanisms, as well as its goals and potential. Its practice is simple, since it utilizes the natural healing capacity of the psyche.

Book excerpt: Most of us want to make a difference. We donate our time and money to charities and causes we deem worthy, choose careers we consider meaningful, and patronize businesses and buy products we believe make the world a better place. Unfortunately, we often base these decisions on assumptions and emotions rather than facts. As a result, even our best intentions often lead to ineffective—and sometimes downright harmful—outcomes. How can we do better? While a researcher at Oxford, trying to figure out which career would allow him to have the greatest impact, William MacAskill confronted this problem head on. He discovered that much of the potential for change was being squandered by lack of information, bad data, and our own prejudice. As an antidote, he and his colleagues developed effective altruism, a practical, data-driven approach that allows each of us to make a tremendous difference regardless of our resources. Effective altruists believe that it’s not enough to simply do good; we must do good better. At the core of this philosophy are five key questions that help guide our altruistic decisions: How many people benefit, and by how much? Is this the most effective thing I can do? Is this area neglected? What would have happened otherwise? What are the chances of success, and how good would success be? By applying these questions to real-life scenarios, MacAskill shows how many of our assumptions about doing good are misguided. For instance, he argues one can potentially save more lives by becoming a plastic surgeon rather than a heart surgeon; measuring overhead costs is an inaccurate gauge of a charity’s effectiveness; and, it generally doesn’t make sense for individuals to donate to disaster relief. MacAskill urges us to think differently, set aside biases, and use evidence and careful reasoning rather than act on impulse. When we do this—when we apply the head and the heart to each of our altruistic endeavors—we find that each of us has the power to do an astonishing amount of good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The only stability possible is stability in motion.”—John William Gardner In his classic treatise Self-Renewal, John W. Gardner examines why great societies thrive and die. He argues that it is dynamism, not decay, that is dramatically altering the landscape of American society. The twentieth century has brought about change more rapidly than any previous era, and with that came advancements, challenges, and often destruction. Gardner cautions that “a society must court the kinds of change that will enrich and strengthen it, rather than the kind of change that will fragment and destroy it.” A society’s ability to renew itself hinges upon its individuals. Gardner reasons that it is the waning of the heart and spirit—not a lack of material might—that threatens American society. Young countries, businesses, and humans have several key commonalities: they are flexible, eager, open, curious, unafraid, and willing to take risks. These conditions lead to success. However, as time passes, so too comes complacency, apathy, and rigidity, causing motivation to plummet. It is at this junction that great civilizations fall, businesses go bankrupt, and life stagnates. Gardner asserts that the individual’s role in social renewal requires each person to face and look beyond imminent threats. Ultimately, we need a vision that there is something worth saving. Through this vision, Gardner argues, society will begin to renew itself, not permanently, but past its average lifespan, and it will at once become enriched and rejuvenated.
