Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Derrida argues that the feminist and intellectual Hélène Cixous is the most important writer working within the French idiom today. To prove this, he elucidates the epistemological and historical interconnectedness of four terms: genesis, genealogy, genre, and genius, and how they pertain to or are implicated in Cixous's work. Derrida explores Cixous's genius (a masculine term in French, he is quick to point out) and the inspiration that guides and informs her writing. He marvels at her skillful working within multiple genres. He focuses on a number of her works, including her extraordinary novel Manhattan and her lyrical and evocative Dream I Tell You, a book addressed to Derrida himself and one in which Cixous presents a series of her dreams. Derrida also delves into the nature of the literary archive, the production of literature, and the importance of the poetic and sexual difference to the entirety of his own work. For forty years, Derrida had a close personal and intellectual relationship with Hélène Cixous. Clever, playful, and eloquent, Geneses, Genealogies, Genres, and Genius charts the influence these two critical giants had on each other and is the most vital work to address Cixous's contribution to French thought.

However, there is much debate about the consequences of this phenomena and the short and long term effects for both the overeducated worker and the economy as a whole. This book contributes to our understanding of recent developments in the research on overeducation by providing a detailed overview of the pertinent theoretical and policy issues."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid development and diffusion of computer technology in daily life has created a wealth of problems and possibilities for researchers. E-mail and the Internet enjoy everyday use by many people, and this fact is altering how evaluations are conducted. Evaluators in a variety of academic and applied settings are using online surveys for evaluation or are contemplating using Web-based data collection strategies in the near future. Public health professionals use surveys to evaluate services and courses, businesses and marketing teams use them to evaluate quality of service and the effectiveness of advertisements, educators assess program outcomes, and those who oversee clinical trials in biotechnology and pharmacology use them to test the outcomes of intervention. These are just a few of the many ways in which online surveys are used in evaluation. Although some fundamental survey research principles can be applied to online surveys, the unique features of the method require special consideration. This volume is a useful guide for anyone wishing to use online surveys for evaluation. The chapters address how online surveys can be integrated into the planning, data collection, and data management phases of an evaluation and how they can be incorporated into numerous typs of evaluation projects, such as needs assessment and impact evaluation. This is the 115th volume of the quarterly report series New Directions for Evaluation, a publication of Jossey-Bass and the American Evaluation Association.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the question of whether religious worldviews fulfil an explanatory function in the lives of believers. After rebutting some common objections to this claim, the author proposes to understand the explanatory nature of religious belief along the lines of inference to the best explanation. This proposal is qualified in view of the peculiar nature of religious belief: It is stressed that the type of explanation concerned occurs within the bounds of religion alone, and loses its sense apart from the religious form of life. In unfolding his argument, the author draws heavily on ideas of explanation developed in the philosophy of science, pointing to differences and comparisons between religious and scientific explanations. The author concludes by considering some specific things that theism explains.
