Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Isaac Penington The name of Isaac Penington is compar atively little known at the present day except among his fellow-believers, the Society of Friends, but his Spirit was so heavenly, his temper so forgiving, his spiritual insight SO deep, that his words have divine nourishment for the soul. His letters, (often written from prison, ) to friends beset with almost every form of temptation and trial, are so full of faith and peace, that they seem worthy to be compared with the spiritual letters of F ene lon. These selections are made from a col lection of his letters published a number of years ago, with some passages from his other writings. I am indebted for important por tions of the introduction, to The Penns and Peningtons of the Seventeenth Century, by Maria Webb. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Extracts From the Works of Isaac Penington Isaac Penington, a minister of the Gospel, being fervently engaged that the professors of religion, under various denominations, might not rest contented in the mere idea, and superficial apprehension of a subject so unspeakably important; but coming to a real experience of the operation of the Spirit and power of the word of life in themselves, might have knowledge of the Father through the revelation of his son, Jesus Christ our Lord; that, thus enjoying the substance, ceremonies, types and shadows would much decrease, and a blessed labour prevail for building one another up in the most holy faith and to this end, his ministry and writings were almost unremittingly directed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of Isaac Penington: To Which Is Added a Review of His Writings The character of a man may be known by his writings: and it must be allowed of greater importance to inspect the thoughts of a virtuous man, than simply to know the outward circumstances of his life. But when we are pleased or edified with the writings of an author of distinction, we become naturally curious to know the manner in which he passed his time: and, on the other hand, if we are led from the perusal of biography, to believe that the subject of it was a person qualified to please or to edify, we are disposed to continue our acquaintance, by perusing also the memorials of his wisdom which he has left behind him. It is chiefly on the former account that a collection of the few scattered accounts of the life of Isaac Penington would be, if well executed, a useful work. His numerous tracts have been three times edited, and lie open to the access of every one. They a re generally grateful and consolatory to that class of readers which is composed of persons who feel their own feeble state, with respect to religious concerns; and desire to be, so far as it is right they should be, assisted by the experience of others. But two quarto, or four octavo volumes, closely printed, are, to many, formidable things; and it is certain too, that considerable attention of mind is a requisite qualification, and considerable calmness of mind a very desirable one, to sit down to the perusal of the valuable remains of this eminent Friend. Cursory readers, also, have imputed to Isaac Penington the charge of mysticism; a term, as generally used, of not the most definite import, but sometimes sufficient to deter the impatient from examining for themselves into the justice of the charge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Isaac Penington: An Eminent Minister of the Gospel in the Society of Friends The following letters form part of a collection published by John Barclay in England in 1828, and since republished in this country. Their author, Isaac Penington, was a member and minister of the religious society of Friends, and was the son of Alderman Penington, of London, who during two years was Mayor of that city, and a noted member of the Long Parliament. The letters were written at various intervals between the time at which Isaac Penington joined the Society of Friends, which was about the year 1658, and his death, which took place in 1679. Both the English and American editions having been exhausted, it has been thought that it might be useful to reprint such of the letters as could be comprised in a volume of this series. With reference to economy of space, the selection is chiefly confined to those which arc hortatory in character. Probably few have realized with more fulness the spiritual nature of Christianity than did Isaac Penington. His own relation of what befell him in his pursuit after truth cannot fail, therefore, to be deeply instructive. "I was acquainted," ho says, "with a spring of life from my childhood, which enlightened me in my tender years, and pointed my heart towards the Lord, begetting true sense in me, and faith, and hope, and love, and humility, and meekness, &c., so that indeed I was a wonder to some that knew me, because of the savor and life of religion which dwelt in my heart and appeared in my conversation. "But I never durst trust the spring of my life, and the springings up of life therefrom; but, in reading the Scriptures, gathered what knowledge I could therefrom, and set this over the spring and springings of life in me, and indeed judged that I ought so to do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Isaac Penington, an Eminent Minister of the Gospel in the Society of Friends: Which He Joined About the Year 1658 And here, it may with deference be suggested, that this particular description Of ministerial com munication, (for such it is, ) will be likely to prove more beneficial, if but a few, or even a single letter be read at one time, and a sufficient interval be allowed for the mind to reflect on and appropriate their contents. In order to this, and with a view that the reader may be in some degree apprized of the topics before him, the editor has attempted, (however imperfectly, ) at the head of each letter, and in the Table of Contents, to give some brief account of the subjects of it; the advantages of which plan will, he trusts, be evident. You did express in a letter to John Reeve, these, or the like words as follows: lWho knoweth 1 say youl the vast Spirit of the Lord which, taketh all things into itself. Certainli, say you, heaven and hell were at union in the root. Thence, say you, they come, thither they shall return again. This was an high language, but it was the depth ofsatan that is the depth of reason, the devits imagination; it is as much as to say, that God and devil were friends in the root, though there be some difference, between them here in their fruit; one brings forth good fruits, and the other bringeth forth evil; but the vast Spirit of the Lord taketh the evil spirit to itself again, r.s you imagined at that time from whence it came: for say you, thence they came, thither they shall return: so that by consequence, the spirit of reason, the devil, came out of God and shall return into God again: This is the foundation of the Quakers faith; but it was not set to be made public to all, but I perceive your mind is changed to bring forth better fruit now than you did then; yet the root of your spirit I perceive is the same, and doth think that your spirit of reason came out of God, and so it shall return to God again. But I say, no; your spirit never came out of God neither shall it return to God again, no, nor see God to eternity, and as for your travels towards the Holy Land in the days when you were a Puritan, which you speak of in the latter end of your book. I do approve of your experience in that condition very well, for it is much like the experience which I had myself when I was a Puritan, so caled, in ie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Deceased Friends, of New-England Yearly Meeting Friends of new-england Yearly Meeting have for several years past, had it in contemplation to publish Memorials con cerning deceased Friends that have been preserved on the re cords of the Meeting; or, at least, to make n for this purpose, from such as have not already in print; but way has not opened for it till the present time, when the Meeting for Sufferings, having appointed a Committee to ex amine said memorials, have united with their report, recom mending the publication of those which are contained in the present volume. It has been matter of regret to them, on this occasion, that of many who were bright and shining lights in their day, no memorial has come down to us but the loss is ours, not theirs. Many were the trials and af ictions that awaited these devoted servants of the Lord, from which we are free. Many the privileges we enjoy, which were not extended to them. And here it may not be amiss to inquire what those princi ples were, which thus sustained our early Friends through all the vicissitudes of time, and enabled them to look forward with a cheering hope, and to feel an undoubted assurance, that when their earthly house of this tabernacle was dissolved, they had a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
