Book Synopsis The Beauty of the Triune God by : Kin Yip Louie
Download or read book The Beauty of the Triune God written by Kin Yip Louie and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth-century Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards has become popular again in contemporary theological discussion. Central to Edwards' theology is his concept of beauty. Delattre wrote the standard work on this topic half a century ago. However, Delattre approaches Edwards mainly as a philosopher, and he does not address how Edwards employs the concept of beauty to explain and defend traditional Reformed doctrines. Recent writings by McClymond, Holmes, and others have shown that defending the Reformed tradition is a fundamental concern of Edwards. This work reveals how Edwards, starting with the common notion that beauty means the appropriate proportional relationship, develops a theological aesthetic that contributes to a rational understanding of major doctrines such as the Trinity, Christology, and eschatology. It shows that Edwards is both an innovative speculative theologian and a staunch defender of Reformed orthodoxy.
Book Synopsis The Critical Path and Other Writings on Critical Theory, 1963-1975 by : Jean O'Grady
Download or read book The Critical Path and Other Writings on Critical Theory, 1963-1975 written by Jean O'Grady and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-03-14 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, which collects Northrop Frye's writings on the theory of literary criticism from the middle period of his career, includes one of Frye's own favourites, The Critical Path (1971). A highly important marker of Frye's career, The Critical Path openly addresses topics that he had previously been reluctant to discuss as fully, including the importance of literature to society, the responsibilities of critics, and the deeper rationales for studying literature. Filled with insightful texts that indicate his transition from literary critic to a theorist of language, myth, and human culture, this edition helps to illuminate many of the ideas and arguments that would appear later in The Great Code and Words with Power. Accompanied by the rigorous scholarship for which the series is renowned, this is another valuable contribution to literary criticism and theory.

Book Synopsis God and Government in an 'Age of Reason' by : David Nicholls
Download or read book God and Government in an 'Age of Reason' written by David Nicholls and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this companion volume to Deity and Domination, David Nicholls broadens his examination of the relationship between religion and politics. Focusing on the images and concepts of God and the state predominant in eighteenth-century discourse, he shows how these were interrelated and reflect the language of the wider cultural contexts. Nicholls argues that the way a community pictures God will inevitably reflect (and also affect) its general understanding of authority, whether it be in state, in family or in other social institutions. Much language about God, for example, has a primarily political reference: in psalms, hymns and sermons God is called king, judge, lord, ruler and to him are ascribed might, majesty, dominion, power and sovereignty. But if political rhetoric is frequently incorporated into religious discourse, the reverse is also true: many key concepts of modern political theory are secularised theological concepts. In his consideration of this important and neglected relationship Nicholls sheds new light on religion and politics in the eighteenth century.
