Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these volumes, the most significant of the collected papers of the Chinese-American theoretical physicist Tsung-Dao Lee are printed. A complete list of his published papers, in order of publication, appears in the Bibliography of T.D. Lee. The papers have been arranged into ten categories, in most cases according to the subject matter. At the beginning of each of the first eight categories of papers, there is a commentary on the content and significance of all of the papers in the category. The two short final categories do not have any commentaries. The editor would like to thank Dr. Richard Friedberg for his assistance in the early stages of the editorial work on this project, as well as for writing commentaries on the papers of Categories III and IV. I would also like to thank Dr. Norman Christ for writing the commentary on the papers of Category VII. The assistance of Irene Tramm was in valuable in many aspects of preparing this collection, including locating copies of Lee's papers. GERALD FEINBERG List of Categories of T.D. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1964-1972, Stephen L Adler wrote seminal papers on high energy neutrino processes, current algebras, soft pion theorems, sum rules, and perturbation theory anomalies that helped lay the foundations for our current standard model of elementary particle physics. These papers are reprinted here together with detailed historical commentaries describing how they evolved, their relation to other work in the field, and their connection to recent literature. Later important work by Dr Adler on a wide range of topics in fundamental theory, phenomenology, and numerical methods, and their related historical background, is also covered in the commentaries and reprints. This book will be a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in the fields in which Dr Adler has worked, and for historians of science studying physics in the final third of the twentieth century, a period in which an enduring synthesis was achieved.

Book excerpt: Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence, quantum computing, and quantum chaos. It is also important in signal processing and the mathematics of algebraic deformation. A remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Groenewold and Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: it furnishes a third, alternative, formulation of quantum mechanics, independent of the conventional Hilbert space, or path integral formulations. In this logically complete and self-standing formulation, one need not choose sides — coordinate or momentum space. It works in full phase space, accommodating the uncertainty principle, and it offers unique insights into the classical limit of quantum theory. This invaluable book is a collection of the seminal papers on the formulation, with an introductory overview which provides a trail map for those papers; an extensive bibliography; and simple illustrations, suitable for applications to a broad range of physics problems. It can provide supplementary material for a beginning graduate course in quantum mechanics.

Book excerpt: The Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics was created in 1965 by a group of LD Landau's pupils. Very soon, it was widely recognized as one of the world's leading centers in theoretical physics. According to Science Magazine, the Institute in the eighties had the highest citation index among all the scientific organizations in the former Soviet Union. This collection of the best papers of the Institute reflects the development of the many directions in the exact sciences during the last 30 years. The reader can find the original formulations of well-known notions in condensed matter theory, quantum field theory, mathematical physics and astrophysics, which were introduced by members of the Landau Institute. The following are some of the achievements described in this book: monopoles (A Polyakov), instantons (A Belavin et al.), weak crystallization (S Brazovskii), spin superfluidity (I Fomin), finite band potentials (S Novikov) and paraconductivity (A Larkin, L Aslamasov).

The most general and in fact final representation theory of Gaussian processes is included in this book. This theory is still referred to often and its developments are discussed.(ii) White noise analysis. This book includes the notes of the series of lectures delivered in 1975 at Carleton University in Ottawa. They describe the very original idea of introducing the notion of generalized Brownian functionals (nowadays called “generalized white noise functionals”, and sometimes “Hida distribution”.(iii) Variational calculus for random fields. This topic will certainly represent one of the driving research lines for probability theory in the next century, as can be seen from several papers in this volume.

Book excerpt: The author of this unique volume, Lev P Gor'kov is internationally renowned for his seminal contribution in the fundamentals of the Theory of Superconductivity, Theory of Metals, the field of Quantum Statistical Physics, and more generally, Organic Metals and the like. Each reprints' group is preceded by the author's introductions and commentaries clarifying the formulation of a problem, summarizing the essence of the results and placing them in the context of recent developments. The author belongs to the last generation of scientists who were the direct disciples of the legendary Russian theorist Lev Landau. And Gor'kov's achievements reflect the unique style and the originality of this famous Scientific School. As with other Russian scientists of his generation, many of the pioneering papers by Lev Gor'kov have been published in the Russian journals that are hard-to-reach for modern readers, students and postdocs. Allowing readers a glimpse into the various ways that the field of condensed matter physics was evolving for more than half a century, the volume is a valuable source for historians of science.

This book was released on 1999-01-04 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Information Storage Systems (AISS), volumes 9 & 10, are special volumes which contain selected papers regarding not only information storage but also information equipment in general and related technologies. The papers were presented at the International Conference on Micromechatronics for Information and Precision Equipment (MIPE '97). MIPE '97 was held in Tokyo, Japan, from 20 to 23 July 1997, as one of the memorial events of the Centennial Grand Congress of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.Information and precision equipment is fast-changing high technology, and is necessary for the development of an international multimedia society and essential for the innovation of conventional machines as well as the creation of new sophisticated machines for future medical, biological and cosmic industries in the 21st century. Information and precision equipment can improve their performances by analyzing, designing, fabricating, controlling and then utilizing a smaller and smaller world in space and time. Micromechatronics is not only a major interdisciplinary engineering but also the principle of innovation in such machines. In the light of this, the scope of MIPE '97 ranged from the micromechanics and micromechatronics of information storage, input/output devices, and precision equipment to microtechnologies related to information equipment. The papers in AISS special volumes are mainly related to information storage, particularly magnetic recording storage. But some of them are related to printer, paper-feeding-mechanism and micromachine technologies, which will directly or indirectly contribute future information devices. The papers contained in this series are of international archival quality and are refereed according to rigorous journal standards.Volume 9 contains papers on the mechanics and tribology of magnetic recording storage systems (mainly hard disk drives), while papers on the micromechatronics of the head-positioning system in magnetic disk storage are compiled in Volume 10 together with papers on optical disk storage and others.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ".... with the huge success of the quantum theory, starting especially with the Schrödinger equation in 1926, came a feeling among the leading physicists that mathematics should keep in the background or, as one person put it, `elegance is for tailors'. From the other side, mid-twentieth century mathematicians were not much more hospitable about intrusions of physics, as we can see, for instance, in Hardy's well known little essay. Walter was one of the first, in the post-war years, to try to put things back together." -- from the Foreword by Elliott Lieb This book contains Thirring's scientific contributions to mathematical physics, statistical physics, general relativity, quantum field theory, and elementary particle theory from 1950 onward. The order of the papers within the various sections is chronological and reflects the development of the fields during the second half of this century. In some cases, Thirring returned to problems decades later when the tools for their solution had ripened. Each section contains introductory comments by Thirring, outlining his motivation for the work at that time.
