Book Synopsis Declamationes Sullanae by : Juan Luis Vives
Download or read book Declamationes Sullanae written by Juan Luis Vives and published by Selected Works of Juan Luis Vi. This book was released on 1989 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical, annotated, bilingual edition, with introduction, notes, and indices, of the first two of Vives' five dramatic speeches on the theme of the abdication of the late Roman Republican dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla. These speeches belong among Vives' experiments, in the years 1514-1523, with various imaginative genres, in which he was trying techniques of personal involvement of both himself and the reader in exploration of pressing issues, whether political, ethical, or esthetic. The fundamental theme is the danger of ruling by fear. Sulla's two friends, Fundanus and Fonteius, counsel respectively against and for Sulla's retirement when Rome is full of vengeful survivors of his savage proscriptions.

This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by the Spanish humanist and philosopher, Juan Luis Vives, is the first tract of its kind in the Western world to treat the problem of urban poverty and propose concrete suggestions for a policy of social legislation. The treatise, published in 1526, is dedicated to the civil authorities of Bruges and deals specifically with the problems of that city, but with potential universal application. Vives calls upon the wealthy to share their blessings with those less fortunate, emphasizing that possessions are not given to us for our own use only but to share them with our neighbour. The reader will often find Vives' reflections and solutions surprisingly modern. The book includes an edition of the Latin text and an English translation.
Book Synopsis J.L. Vives: De ratione dicendi by : Juan Luis Vives
Download or read book J.L. Vives: De ratione dicendi written by Juan Luis Vives and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juan Luis Vives’ 1533 treatise on rhetoric, De ratione dicendi, is a highly original but largely neglected Renaissance Latin text. David Walker’s critical edition, with introduction, facing translation and notes, is the first to appear in English. The conception of rhetoric which Vives elaborates in the De ratione dicendi differs significantly from that which is found in other rhetorical treatises written during the humanist Renaissance. Rhetoric as Vives conceives it is part of the discipline of self-knowledge, and involves a distinct way of thinking about the way kinds of rhetorical style manifested modes of human life. Moving as it did from the concrete particulars of a man’s style to their abstractable implications, the study of rhetoric was for him a form of moral thinking which enabled the student to develop a critical framework for understanding the world he lived in.

Book Synopsis J.L. Vives: De officio mariti by : Juan Luis Vives
Download or read book J.L. Vives: De officio mariti written by Juan Luis Vives and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise is a sequel to Vives’ On the Education of the Christian Woman, published in Brill’s series, Selected Works of J.L. Vives. It studies the institution of marriage from a male vantage point, with interesting observations on female psychology, anticipating his later work, De anima. Vives insists more here on the weakness and instability of the woman than in the previous treatise, relying on the biological tenets of Aristotle and Galen. Much attention is given to the choice of a wife and to the husband’s role as tutor of his spouse and disciplinarian. The marriage debt is regarded as a necessary evil, as in St. Paul, while the spirituality of the union is exalted. The book was often printed together with the De institutione feminae Christianae and even considered as a fourth book of that work.

Book Synopsis Humanism, Venice, and Women by : Margaret L. King
Download or read book Humanism, Venice, and Women written by Margaret L. King and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published between 1975 and 2003, the essays included in Humanism, Venice, and Women reflect Margaret L. King's distinct but interlocking scholarly interests: humanism and Venice; women and humanism; and women of the Italian Renaissance. The first part focuses on defining the key characteristics of Venetian as opposed to other Italian humanisms, with an analysis of Gramscian theory about the historical role of intellectuals as an aid to understanding humanism in Venice, followed by essays on three Venetian humanists who wrote about family relationships (or the need to avoid them). The third section introduces the major Renaissance women humanists and analyzes the relation of their work to that of male humanists, along with an essay on Renaissance mothers of sons, in Italy and beyond. Crossing boundaries of region and gender, and the subdisciplines of intellectual and social history, these essays are provocative in themselves while demonstrating how shifting historiographical contexts encourage scholars to view the historical record in new and fruitful ways.

Book excerpt: The late-medieval movement into 'vernacular theology,' as it has come to be called, inspired many forms of literary expression, in all the languages of Europe. Spanning a wide field, the contributors to this volume consider hagiography, translations of and commentaries on scripture, accounts of visionary experiences, and devotional literature. Their essays illuminate encounters with the divine mediated through language, bringing into play a diversity of national cultures and disciplinary points of view. They also engage vital social and political issues connected with religious experience, including challenges to authority, reinterpretations of texts, and renegotiations of gender roles.

Book Synopsis Pieter Bruegel and the Culture of the Early Modern Dinner Party by : Claudia Goldstein
Download or read book Pieter Bruegel and the Culture of the Early Modern Dinner Party written by Claudia Goldstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining a rich, interdisciplinary mix of sources, including stoneware jugs, personal correspondence, paintings, inventories, and literature written for the dining room, this study offers a critical and entirely original examination of the function of early modern images for the people who owned and viewed them. The study explores the emergence, functions and material culture of the Antwerp dinner party during the heady days of the mid-sixteenth century, when Antwerp?s art market was thriving and a new wealthy, non-noble class dominated the city. The author recontextualizes some of Bruegel?s work within the cultural nexus of the dining room, where material culture and theatrical performance met humanist wit and the desire for professional advancement. The narrative also touches on the reception of Northern art in Lombardy, on intersections among painting, material culture, and theater, and on intellectual history.
