Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giant resonances are collective excitations of the atomic nucleus, a typical quantum many-body system. The study of these fundamental modes has in many respects contributed to our understanding of the bulk behavior of the nucleus and of the dynamics of non-equilibrium excitations. Although the phenomenon of giant resonances has been known for more than 50 years, a large amount of information has been obtained in the last 10 years. This book gives an up-to-date, comprehensive account of our present knowledge of giant resonances. It presents the experimental facts and the techniques used to obtain that information, describes how these facts fit into theoretical concepts and how this allows to determine various nuclear properties which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Included as an introduction is an overview of the main facts, a short history of how the field has developed in the course of time, and a discussion of future perspectives.

Out of the 19 articles that it has, a fairly good number of them discuss several important and fundamental aspects of the high-Tc superconductivity. Some of the issues related to the phenomenon of superconductivity in general are discussed in a few of the manuscripts. The remaining articles deal with superconductivity in unconventional and highly correlated metals

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two most important developments in nuclear physics were the shell model and the collective model. The former gives the formal framework for a description of nuclei in terms of interacting neutrons and protons. The latter provides a very physical but phenomenological framework for interpreting the observed properties of nuclei. A third approach, based on variational and mean-field methods, brings these two perspectives together in terms of the so-called unified models. Together, these three approaches provide the foundations on which nuclear physics is based. They need to be understood by everyone practicing or teaching nuclear physics, and all those who wish to gain an understanding of the foundations of the models and their relationships to microscopic theory as given by recent developments in terms of dynamical symmetries. This book provides a simple presentation of the models and theory of nuclear collective structure, with an emphasis on the physical content and the ways they are used to interpret data. Part 1 presents the basic phenomenological collective vibrational and rotational models as introduced by Bohr and Mottelson and their many colleagues. It also describes the extensions of these models to parallel unified models in which neutrons and protons move in a mean-field with collective degrees of freedom. Part 2 presents the predominant theories used to describe the collective properties of nuclei in terms of interacting nucleons. These theories, which are shared with other many-body systems, are shown to emerge naturally from the unified models of Part 1.

Book excerpt: Unique in scope and treatment, Theory of Atomic Nuclei, Quasi-particle and Phonons gives a microscopic description of the structure of complex nuclei at low and intermediate excitation energies in terms of quasi-particle and phonon operators. A substantial quantity of modern experimental data is collected together and incorporated into the book to complement the theoretical treatment. This source book is an extremely useful research reference of the results of experimental work in the area.

Book excerpt: In the diversified and changing scenarios of the current frontiers of nuclear physics research, the topic 'Nuclear Equation of State' occupies the pivotal position. The present series of lectures by well known experts in this field span a wide area ranging from low energy to ultrarelativistic energy, with application to astrophysical phenomena like supernovae explosions, neutron star and other stellar processes, phase transitions in quantum chromodynamics, and properties of quark-gluon plasma. The present status of the VUU model for the intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions is also reviewed.

This book was released on 1994-09-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposal was originally forwarded from Andrew Durnell in 1991. It is different to the competition in style, progressing logically from general nuclear properties to nuclear structure, and in content, choosing to treat the major topics in sufficient depth for the student to obtain further understanding. The logical approach, linking general nuclear properties and nuclear structure is a benefit. The careful selection of topics, well-chosen illustrations, box features containing recent research examples and results, and tested problems, together provide a complete introduction to the major concepts and ideas required to understand nuclear physics. The author is careful throughout to keep nuclear physics in context with other disciplines, and to present the subject area as dynamic and interesting, through the use of box features. Series Editor Comment "advanced text suitable for final year courses and for introductory postgraduate studies" (Hamilton) "the range and depth of cover appear ideal and Heyde's approach is excellent ... a good teacher and text follows very much his style ... he also looks forward to the frontiers ... important in a (post) graduate text ... a student can see where his own particular topic may fit in ... many texts are far removed from research ... wealth and choice of figures ... good diagrams can do a lot for a text ... level of mathematics will ensure that it can be widely used"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an understandable review of SU(3) representations, SU(3) Wigner–Racah algebra and the SU(3) ⊃ SO(3) integrity basis operators, which are often considered to be difficult and are avoided by most nuclear physicists. Explaining group algebras that apply to specific physical systems and discussing their physical applications, the book is a useful resource for researchers in nuclear physics. At the same time it helps experimentalists to interpret data on rotational nuclei by using SU(3) symmetry that appears in a variety of nuclear models, such as the shell model, pseudo-SU(3) model, proxy-SU(3) model, symplectic Sp(6, R) model, various interacting boson models, various interacting boson–fermion models, and cluster models. In addition to presenting the results from all these models, the book also describes a variety of statistical results that follow from the SU(3) symmetry.
