Book excerpt: Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914) was the son and grandson of painters. His mother died when he was still a child; his relations with his father in later life were vexed. He traveled to Norway when young and in his early literary activity translated the plays of Henrik Ibsen. Unlucky in first love, he eventually married happily; and enjoyed several years of settled domesticity before dying of consumption at the age of forty-three, being spared the First World War. Morgenstern's poetry falls into two classes. One comprises a spiritual testament to his interest in Rudolf Steiner, whose lectures he attended regularly. These are not widely read. The poems he is known and loved for are of a different complexion entirely. They are collected under the title "Alle Galgenlieder," or "Complete Gallows Songs," although they are nothing if not cheerful. They are short, light-hearted, ingenious, and unexpected; and are permanently lodged in the German psyche, where they reside in transnational communion with runcible spoons and vorpal blades.

By the end of his life Klee discovered his own poetic voice in alphabet drawings that read as anagrams and pictorial poems that challenge conventional distinctions between verbal and visual forms of expression." "Paul Klee, Poet/Painter is a case study in the reciprocity of poetry and painting in early modernist practice. It introduces readers to a little-known facet of Klee's creative activity and re-evaluates his contributions to a modernist aesthetic."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis The Collected Poems of Muriel Rukeyser by : Janet E. Kaufman

This book was released on 2005-05-22 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muriel Rukeyser held a visionary belief in the human capacity to create social change through language. She earned an international reputation as a powerful voice against enforced silences of all kind, against the violence of war, poverty, and racism. Her eloquent poetry of witness-of the Scottsboro Nine, the Spanish Civil War, the poisoning of the Gauley Bridge laborers-split the darkness covering a shameful world. In addition to the complete texts of her twelve previously published books, this volume also features new poems discovered by the editors; Rukeyser's translations, including the first English translations of Octavio Paz's work; early work by Rukeyser not previously published in book form; and the controversial book-length poem Wake Island. An introduction by the editors traces Rukeyser's life and literary reputation and complements discerning annotations and textual notes to the poems.
Book Synopsis The Storyteller Essays by : Walter Benjamin
Download or read book The Storyteller Essays written by Walter Benjamin and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of philosopher Walter Benjamin's work as it pertains to his famous essay, "The Storyteller," this collection includes short stories, book reviews, parables, and as a selection of writings by other authors who had an influence on Benjamin's work. “The Storyteller” is one of Walter Benjamin’s most important essays, a beautiful and suggestive meditation on the relation between narrative form, social life, and individual existence—and the product of at least a decade’s work. What might be called the story of The Storyteller Essays starts in 1926, with a piece Benjamin wrote about the German romantic Johann Peter Hebel. It continues in a series of short essays, book reviews, short stories, parables, and even radio shows for children. This collection brings them all together to give readers a new appreciation of how Benjamin’s thinking changed and ripened over time, while including several key readings of his own—texts by his contemporaries Ernst Bloch and Georg Lukács; by Paul Valéry; and by Herodotus and Montaigne. Finally, to bring things around, there are three short stories by “the incomparable Hebel” with whom the whole intellectual adventure began.
