Book excerpt: "Leonor Fini (1907-1996) was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century. She never formally trained as an artist but drew from many influences, notably the Flemish Masters, Symbolism, and Surrealism. An independent and passionate woman who felt an instinctual hostility to the idea of being part of any artistic group or movement, she shared with her avant-garde circle a fervent belief in the power of desire for social and political subversion. This authoritative Catalogue Raisonné is as timely as it is crucial, bringing Fini's vast body of work to the public so that her immense talent may be discovered, researched, and enjoyed."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Horace Trenerry (1899-1958) an artist of unique vision and quality remained known only for a small group of admirers, most of them in Adelaide. Disregarded in books on Australian art, two of Trenerry's paintings were nevertheless included in an important exhibition of Australian painting shown at the Tate Gallery, London in 1963 where they were singled out for special praise. In 1970, Lou Klepac, when Curator of paintings at the Art Gallery of South Australia, published a book on this remarkable painter, whose achievement seemed impossible to extend beyond the south Australian border. Today, Trenerry is being discovered by discerning collectors of Australian art, especially in Sydney, where Barry Pearce, Head Curator of Australian Art, has acquired several of Trenerry's finest works for the collection. The present book which shows a wide range of Trenerry's work all in colour, will allow people to discover a painter who deserves to be better known. Besides two essays by Lou Klepac and extensive biographical notes, the book includes and essay by Barry Pearce on Trenerry and Adelaide, and a memoir by Jeffrey Smart, who visited the artist in Aldinga in the late 1940s.'..there was something so brave and mad about Tren. He knew how to live, but painting was the imperative necessity, and everything was sacrificed to that.' from Jeffrey Smart, Not Quite Straight, a memoir. William Heinmann Australia 1996AUTHORLou Klepac, art historian and publisher, was born in Croatia in 1936. he emigrated to Australia in 1950 and was educated at Perth Modern School and the University of Western Australia. He was Curator of Paintings at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (1964-66) and at the Art Gallery of South Australia (1966-1970). And then Senior Curator and Deputy Director at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (1974-80).
Download or read book Vigée Le Brun written by Joseph Baillio and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842) was one of the finest eighteenth-century french painters and among the most important women artists of all time. Celebrated for her expressive portraits of French royalty and aristocracy, and especially of her patron Marie Antoinette, Vigée Le Brun exemplified success and resourcefulness in an age when women were rarely allowed either. Because of her close association with the queen Vigée Le Brun was forced to flee France during the French Revolution. For twelve years she traveled throughout Europe, painting noble sitters in the courts of Naples, Russia, Austria, and Prussia. She returned to France in 1802, under the reign of Emperor Napoleon I, where her creativity continued unabated. This handsome volume details Vigée Le Brun's story, portraying a talented artist who nimbly negotiated a shifting political and geographic landscape. Essays by international scholars address the ease with which this self-taught artist worked with monarchs, the nobility, court officials and luminaries of arts and letters, many of whom attended her famous salons. The position of women artists in Europe and at the Salons of the period is also explored, as are the challenges faced by Vigée Le Brun during her exile. The ninety paintings and pastels included in this volume attest to Vigée Le Brun's superb sense of color and expression. They include exquisite depictions of counts and countesses, princes and princesses alongside mothers and children, including the artist herself and her beloved daughter, Julie. A chronology of the life of Vigée Le Brun and a map of her travels accompany the text, elucidating the peregrinations of this remarkable, independent painter.

Download or read book Die Malerin written by Marie-Louise von Motesiczky and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive catalog of an important German-Jewish expressionist painter. On the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the artist's birth, this catalogue presents for the first time an overview of Marie-Louise von Motesiczky's paintings in an elegant volume of full color reproductions accompanied by illuminating commentary. Born in Vienna, she studied with Max Beckmann, who became a significant influence on the young artist. Later, in exile in London, Motesiczky grew close to Oskar Kokoschka and became acquainted with some of the leading intellectuals of the twentieth century, including Elias Canetti, with whom she shared a long and intimate relationship. The paintings and drawings in this book explore the artist's transition from the edgy realism of her early years to the softer and more poetic paintings of her later work. Her portraits, for which she is most famous, include compelling self-examinations as well as a moving series devoted to her mother. Essays on Motesiczky's youth in Vienna, her friendship with Beckmann, and her time in London provide crucial background to a unique and fascinating artist whose wider recognition is long overdue.

Book Synopsis A Pre-Raphaelite Journey by : Pamela Gerrish Nunn
Download or read book A Pre-Raphaelite Journey written by Pamela Gerrish Nunn and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1872-1945) was an accomplished painter, illustrator and designer whose artistic life bridged the Victorian and modern worlds. Her work was much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists whose love of detail, colour, symbolism, storytelling and nature was so hugely influential on mid Victorian Britain. Eleanor's own work carried the Pre-Raphaelite style forward into the 20th century. Indeed she became known as 'the last Pre-Raphaelite'. Despite her huge popularity in her own time, Eleanor's work has been neglected since her death in 1945. This book is the first monograph on the artist. It is the result of extensive research by Pamela Gerrish Nunn, whose work on Pre-Raphaelite women artists has done so much to re-assess the art history of the Victorian period. Here, the author takes us on a journey through Eleanor's training, career and achievements to re-establish her as an important and fascinating figure in the history of Pre-Raphaelite art.
