Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems, Principally From the Antique In the following designs the selection has been made chiefly with a view to their capability Of supplying topics for poetry, - rather as Objects of taste than of virtu. The drawings are necessarily slight and unlaboured; though it is hoped that the character of the originals is preserved. Finished designs of gems are seldom found in the greater collections; for no excellence of the en graver can satisfy the eye Of the antiquary - and true taste will prefer an accurate indication, to the studied and finished Oopying of forms, whose delicacy and sweet ness are beyond all power of the burin. Download or read book Gems (Classic Reprint) written by Helen Barlett Bridgman and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems Gems in their appeal are like the stars. They enchant the eye, they stir the imagination. Then, as with cats and clocks, they are "company." A valuable stone is the one thing that endures. Lace is soon a rag, velvet impossible, flowers dead; but a jewel, if treated kindly, lives forever. It is indeed almost as indestructible as truth or a mighty love. The very word evokes a picture. Is there a richer syllable than "gem"? With the jeweler it means the finest of its kind. But the scholars say a gem, whether of emerald or quartz, is not a gem unless engraved. Other times, other manners. These days the art of gem engraving scarcely exists, while precious stones are everywhere. Before a fine specimen, "gem" leaps to the lips involuntarily. It is suggested that the business classification be known as gemology in distinction from the mineralogy of science. Treatises on gems, comparatively few, difficult of access, generally reference books, are often tough reading. The scientist may be great and useful, but for the neophyte he has scant regard. It seemed as if a small volume, depicting in simple words the salient features of precious stones, garnering from the huge harvest of research the easily assimilable, might not come amiss. If we cannot know all, let us at least grasp something from that vast world of interesting facts to which so many women who wear jewels and men who buy and sell them seem indifferent. Gems have many sides, and even laymen may attain a few. Nothing is more bewildering to the beginner than the manner in which the various mineral families masquerade in one another's clothing. It would be no trick at all were the garnet always red, the sapphire always blue, the topaz always yellow, as at first we suppose. Nature seems positively to enjoy playing pranks which turn all preconceived notions topsy-turvy. Increasing experience confers that sixth sense which gradually distinguishes one family from another. Yet even experts, to be absolutely sure, must sometimes resort to scientific tests. These are the triumphs of modem times over the simple file of the ancients. Now, hardness, specific gravity, refraction, dispersion, dichroicism, by means of delicate and often inexpensive instruments, can precisely be determined. To own a few good stones is an education. Like pictures, their qualities come out only in close association. A judiciously purchased collection may prove a good investment. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems From the Victorian Anthology The publishers have asked me to put together, under the title of Gems from the Victorian Anthology, some poems and extracts from poems which appeared in a collection they printed for me in 1902. In compiling a work of nearly six hundred octavo pages, a good many considerations had to be at tended to, over and above the personal likings of the compiler, such as the opinion of those he considered to be good judges, the desirability of representing various poetical schools, and so forth. In this little book I have attended to none of these considerations, but have selected simply poems and parts of poems which I particularly liked, in the belief that they will give pleasure to persons of similar tastes, bad or good. Download or read book Gems of Truth and Beauty written by Charles C. Albertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems of Truth and Beauty: Selected From the Sermons and Addresses of Talmage, Beecher, Moody, Spurgeon, Guthrie, and Parker The age in which we live demands both variety and brevity in much that we read. People wish to compass many subjects in the shortest time. This disposition arises largely, no doubt, from the necessities and opportunities of our civilization. The improved appliances of business, the increased facilities for travel, and the wonderful rapidity with which we gather information, render it indispensable that there be periodicals, and at least some books which present the freshest and best thoughts in convenient and concise form. The pages of "Gems Of Truth And Beauty," show it to be a book of this kind. The author has skillfully selected from some of the greatest preachers, among the dead and living, many of their choicest sayings. Some of these sayings are the result of the most careful elaboration in the study, others are the sudden flashes of inspiration in moments of high excitement; but whether coming to their originators suddenly or slowly, they have back of them the power of experience and culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gem, 1898 T is with much pleasure that we present this, the first edition of the gem, to the students and friends of Taylor University. While the book is limited to our own college and to our own college life and must, of necessity, be much like other college publications, yet we claim many new features for our book. Having no occasion to roast any of the Professors, and not having any serious objections to the general management of the school, the Senior Class has not published this book as a medium through which to give vent to low, degrading criticisms and venomous remarks, but it has been published because they desired something which they could keep as a memento of their college life, and which they might give to their friends that they too might have some idea of what Taylor University is like.
