Book excerpt: The Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, which appointed John Alfred Hannah as board secretary in 1935 and president in 1941, was a very different institution from the Michigan State University from which he retired in 1969, after serving twenty-eight years as president. During Hannah's tenure, overall enrollment increased from 4,401 to 40,820, while graduate student numbers went from below 200 to more than 10,000. The number of departments also grew from 44 in 1935 to 104 in 1969. Hannah's expansion of academic courses went far beyond the original agricultural and applied sciences, as was reflected in the two changes of name for the college: In 1955, the college became Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science, and in 1964 it was renamed Michigan State University. In examining this transformation, Dressel - who spent a very distinguished forty-four year career at Michigan State College/University and is noted for his writings on evaluation in higher education - produced neither a biography of Hannah nor a history of Michigan State during the Hannah years. Instead, his book describes the character of the institution before Hannah's arrival, examines Hannah's vision for the college, and evaluates Hannah's methods for "the transformation of a small land-grant college into a major university under the leadership of a man thoroughly committed to the land-grant mission." Dressel examines how Hannah sought to infuse the university with an expanded concept of public service and extended this concept to an international audience.

Pundits across the political spectrum worry that research on topics like climate change, evolutionary theory, vaccine safety, and genetically modified foods has become overly politicized. At the same time, it is clear that values play an important role in science by limiting unethical forms of research and by deciding what areas of research have the greatest relevance for society. Deciding how to distinguish legitimate and illegitimate influences of values in scientific research is a matter of vital importance. Recently, philosophers of science have written a great deal on this topic, but most of their work has been directed toward a scholarly audience. This book makes the contemporary philosophical literature on science and values accessible to a wide readership. It examines case studies from a variety of research areas, including climate science, anthropology, chemical risk assessment, ecology, neurobiology, biomedical research, and agriculture. These cases show that values have necessary roles to play in identifying research topics, choosing research questions, determining the aims of inquiry, responding to uncertainty, and deciding how to communicate information. Kevin Elliott focuses not just on describing roles for values but also on determining when their influences are actually appropriate. He emphasizes several conditions for incorporating values in a legitimate fashion, and highlights multiple strategies for fostering engagement between stakeholders so that value influences can be subjected to careful and critical scrutiny.

Although information on climate change is readily available, the nation still seems unprepared or unwilling to respond effectively to climate change, due partly to a general lack of public understanding of climate change issues and opportunities for effective responses. The reality of global climate change lends increasing urgency to the need for effective education on earth system science, as well as on the human and behavioral dimensions of climate change, from broad societal action to smart energy choices at the household level. The public's limited understanding of climate change is partly the result of four critical challenges that have slowed development and delivery of effective climate change education. As one response to these challenges, Congress, in its 2009 and 2010 appropriation process, requested that the National Science Foundation (NSF) create a program in climate change education to provide funding to external grantees to improve climate change education in the United States. To support and strengthen these education initiatives, the Board on Science Education of the National Research Council (NRC) created the Climate Change Education Roundtable. The Roundtable convened two workshops. Climate Change Education Goals, Audiences, and Strategies is a summary of the discussions and presentations from the first workshop, held October 21 and 22, 2010. This report focuses on two primary topics: public understanding and decision maker support. It should be viewed as an initial step in examining the research on climate change and applying it in specific policy circumstances.

In an era of “post-truth,” the scientific drive to discover empirical truths has a special value. But over time, in-depth study in a major discipline has come to dominate the curricula at many institutions. This evolution of the curriculum has been driven, in part, by increasing specialization in the academic disciplines. There is little doubt that disciplinary specialization has helped produce many of the achievement of the past century.
