Book excerpt: Research has not yet found a correlation between community engagement and social-emotional learning (SEL) in a manner that benefits the recruitment and retention of suburban middle school band students. Teachers who create community engagement initiatives can boost the number of student recruits as the program becomes more widely recognized as a valuable asset of the school. This explanatory sequential mixed methods design study examined strategies regarding community engagement and SEL for recruiting and retaining middle school instrumental music education students. Perspectives on community engagement and SEL benefiting recruitment and retention of middle school band students emerged. Research revealed a connection between community engagement and social-emotional learning regarding middle school band recruitment and retention strategies. The researcher surveyed sixty-four suburban middle school band teachers regarding their perceptions of community engagement and SEL and their effects on recruitment and retention in their programs. The researcher interviewed four suburban middle school band teachers to gather their experiences and identify strategies in this area. This research can further advance middle school band teachers' approaches to recruiting and retaining students. Based on the findings of this research, researchers can conduct similar studies on recruitment and retention that embrace social-emotional learning competencies and community engagement initiatives for other types of music and elective courses.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to formulate a plan for recruiting students into a beginning level band program and retaining instrumental students throughout the middle school grade levels. Instrumental music educators need to have a recruitment plan for enticing students into the band program as well as a plan to retain those students. Through the development of a thorough plan that details specific approaches and methods, music educators are able to recruit students into the instrumental program as well as retain students through the higher levels of said program. Plans based on experiences from existing programs and research may allow educators to identify students who are potentially interested in the instrumental programs, providing strategies to target all groups of students to increase participation. Teachers will benefit, and consequently better develop an ideal instrumental program, through the implementation and improvement of their recruitment and retention plan. The developed plan identified specific activities for each month and included such things as working with teachers and administrators in the elementary school, planned interactions between middle school director and elementary school students, community involvement and performance opportunities. With the implementation of a well-developed plan, music educators develop and maintain a successful comprehensive program for students to grow, develop, and foster musicianship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this multiple case study research was to examine recruitment and retention strategies used by successful urban school band directors. Participants were four urban school band directors and two urban school administrators. The directors were purposely selected based upon having successful and well-known band programs in schools that exhibited characteristics common to urban schools, including (a) a large percentage of low-SES students, (b) low, mean standardized test scores for students, (c) limited parental involvement in the band program, and (d) constrained budgets to support the band program. A survey and interviews were used to collect data on the teachers, their programs, and their administrators. Interview questions were developed based upon a review of literature and research questions regarding strategies used to recruit and retain students within urban school band programs. Using a semi-structured format, directors were interviewed to learn about their background in music, education, and current teaching situation. Two administrators were also interviewed regarding their perceptions of the recruitment and retention of students in the band programs in their school. Each band director participant described similar approaches to recruitment and retention, utilizing techniques such as demonstration concerts, informational handouts, testing of students on instruments, and holding a recruitment night for parents. They also noted the importance of administrative and parental support.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate recruitment strategies currently in place by band teachers for their band programs and their effects on minority student participation in 4-12th grade public school band programs of Middlesex County. Participants include grades 4-12 band teachers in Middlesex County, NJ. Via online survey, participants responded to questions about current demographics in their band programs, current recruitment strategies, and perceived effects of those strategies on minority student participation. After receiving survey responses, the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics for emergent themes. The results found that of the 3,818 students accounted for, 26% were White, 7% were Black, 49% were Asian, 8% were Hispanic, and 10% were an unspecified minority. On average, elementary school teachers used 6.93 of the given strategies, middle school teachers used 6.65 of the given strategies, and high school teachers used 5.4 of the given strategies. Many participants found their band programs reflected the demographics of the community. Other participants felt financial burdens put on the family and lack of cultural representation in music and teaching staff leads students not to join their school's band program.

Book excerpt: Student involvement in school band programs can be a positive learning experience. By featuring both physical activity and multi-level brain function, successful band programs support positive student results in both academic and social development. Graduation rates in band students are often higher than that of the overall student population. By recognizing this, increased graduation rates could be supported by increasing and retaining band student enrollment. This study examined and identifies the characteristics of band programs that contribute to increased effectiveness through the utilization of one director for both middle and high school. Additionally, the musical qualities band students having the same director for both middle and high school was examined. Social and peer issues impact the lives of most adolescents. The significant emotional support experienced by many band students during the development of multi-year personal relationships serves to enhance their development and success in areas outside of music. By examining existing research in this context, the study found that there is an increased enrollment in situations where band directors are utilized in both the middle and high school band situation. The literature suggests that the continuity of instruction illustrates a musical rapport and understanding between student and director unique to the band experience.

This study includes results of student surveys of current high-school students who took band during their middle school years, seeking essential factors affecting student perceptions about continuation into high school band programs. Research into band student enrollment and retention exist, yet limited resources focus on transitioning from middle to high school. Studies indicate that participation in large music ensembles, such as bands, provides social, emotional, and academic benefits. Increasing student retention across this transition could yield improved student experiences and achievement in music and beyond. Existing research combined with student survey results constitutes a qualitative thematic analyzing why students who have learned much about the basics of instrumental music in middle school band elect not to continue their studies in high school. Based on existing literature, peer-connectedness, parental support, and director rapport are likely indicators for continuation in the band. By improving band student retention rates, improvements in overall graduation rates may also be achieved.

Book excerpt: More institutions are using marching bands in an effort to encourage and boost small college and university enrollment. In response to concerns about low enrollment, colleges and universities are adopting vibrant and more contemporary marching bands to serve in the capacity of recruiter and primary ambassador for the institution. To this end, a strategy is developed that will assist with institutional awareness, marketing, academic expansion and student retention. Utilizing the marching band as a strategic tool for student recruitment provides opportunity for the college to attract a greater diversity of students to the institution. In this thesis, historical data is gathered and evidence reported that supports the notion that a collegiate marching band can be used as the primary tool for student recruitment and retention. Talladega College, a historically Black, faith-based college located in the foot-hills of eastern Alabama, implemented such a strategy in 2012 and witnessed institutional growth from 574 students to more than 1300 full time students by 2020. Organizational policies, growth strategies, and recruitment practices, designed to encourage colleges growth, are examined. Steps for success are delineated and alternative practices to rehearsal technique are discussed.

Book excerpt: "This action research aimed to examine the factors contributing to student retention in a middle school band program through the self-reported perspectives of students. With a critical inquiry framework, it was anticipated that the results would inform potential action by the researcher aimed at increasing student access to music programs. Through an empirical descriptive design using survey technique, the study population included band students at the school where the researcher was teaching at the time of the study. Results of data analysis indicate that students mostly made their decisions independently, while some were influenced by parents and peers. The most prominent influences on continuing in band were reported as follows: enjoyment of the music itself, qualities of their instrument, social interactions with peers, the teacher, sense of accomplishment, and positive emotional experiences in band. Challenges to continuing in band were indicated by a few students to include: missing other electives, the appearance (condition) and mechanics of certain instruments, learning new music, financial obligations of the instrument, and reports of negative interactions with peers. Many students reported being unable to practice outside of band however few mentioned this as a challenge to staying in band. It makes sense that students do not find this a major problem because this particular school allows for 50 minutes of band rehearsal five days a week. The results led to ideas for actions to be taken on improving retention"--Pages iii-iv.

The reason for this empirical study was to discover ways to grow the size and quality of the band program over time. Surveys were administered to band students from two Central Louisiana schools for the purpose of comparison and to obtain student input regarding motivating influences to join and stay in music programs. Findings indicated that both extrinsic and intrinsic factors were valued by students and that social factors were especially influential. Extrinsic factors remained important to students even as they became more intrinsically motivated with experience. The broad diversity of student responses pointed to the need for a multi-targeted approach to attracting and keeping students that reflects the unique personalities, needs, developmental stages, and experience of students. An application model was designed for current and future use and strategies were implemented in the classroom.
