Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring Underground Nuclear Explosions focuses on the checking of underground nuclear explosions, including the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTB), seismological stations, earthquake-source models, and seismicity. The publication first elaborates on test-ban negotiations, nuclear explosions, seismological background, and explosions and earthquakes as seismic sources. Concerns cover comparison between explosion-source and earthquake-source models, theoretical calculation of seismic waves, earth structure, seismicity, nuclear test activities, bomb designs, and disarmament treaties. The manuscript then tackles seismological stations, detection, event definition and location, depth estimation, and identification. Topics include multistation discriminants, statistical aspects, long-period and short-period signals, near distances, location by a network of stations, international data exchange, station detection capabilities, and station networks. The book examines the monitoring of a comprehensive test-ban treaty, nonseismological identification, evasion, peaceful nuclear explosions, and yield estimation. The text is a dependable reference for researchers interested in the monitoring of underground nuclear explosions.

Book Synopsis Establishment of Data Base of Regional Seismic Recordings from Earthquakes, Chemical Explosions and Nuclear Explosions in the Former Soviet Union by :
Download or read book Establishment of Data Base of Regional Seismic Recordings from Earthquakes, Chemical Explosions and Nuclear Explosions in the Former Soviet Union written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report results of work on establishment of a data base of regional seismic recordings from earthquakes, chemical explosions and nuclear explosions in the former Soviet Union are described. This work was carried out in the Complex Seismological Expedition (CSE) of the Joint Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The recording system, methods of investigations and primary data processing are described in detail. The largest number of digital records was received by the permanent seismic station Talgar, situated in the northern Tien Shan, 20 km to the east of Almaty city. More than half of the records are seismograms of underground nuclear explosions and chemical explosions. The nuclear explosions were recorded mainly from the Semipalatinsk test site. In addition, records of the explosions from the Chinese test site Lop Nor and industrial nuclear explosions from the West Siberia region were obtained. Four records of strong chemical explosions were picked out (two of them have been produced at the Semipalatinsk test site and two -- in Uzbekistan). We also obtained 16 records of crustal earthquakes, mainly from the Altai region, close to the Semipalatinsk test site, and also from the West China region, close to the Lop Nor test site. In addition, a small number of records of earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions, received by arrays of temporary stations, that have been working in the southern Kazakhstan region are included in this report. Parameters of the digital seismograms and file structure are described. Possible directions of future work on the digitizing of unique data archive are discussed.

Book Synopsis Earthquakes Induced by Underground Nuclear Explosions by : Rodolfo Console
Download or read book Earthquakes Induced by Underground Nuclear Explosions written by Rodolfo Console and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents different studies carried out on induced seismicity, both from experimental and theoretical viewpoints. Several examples of seismic activity induced by underground nuclear explosions, impoundment of artificial reservoirs, and mining activities are given and discussed. Another important subject which is covered is earthquakes induced by other large earthquakes. Further, tectonic stress release in the immediate vicinity of an underground nuclear explosion is treated. The release produces aftershocks of small magnitude, usually for several weeks, occurring a few kilometers within the shot point. This phenomenon is of importance in the context of monitoring a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S/P ratios have shown great promise as discriminants for explosions and earthquakes recorded at regional distances. Spectrograms, or the frequency-time displays of seismograms, have been used to separate explosion populations into those which are single-shot or multiple-hole instantaneous explosions and those which are ripple-fired explosions. However, despite the promise of these discriminants, there are problems of transportability. The character of regional phases is extremely sensitive to differences in propagation paths, and it is essential to calibrate regions of monitoring interest. We have investigated the seismicity (both natural and man-made) in central Chile recorded on a high-frequency seismic network. We are developing a data base to quantify distance-dependent spectral ratios and other potential discriminants. Within the seismic network is a large open-pit copper mine which has occasional multiple-shot explosions with magnitudes as large as 3.7. We find at close epicentral distances (
Book Synopsis Identification of Seismic Sources — Earthquake or Underground Explosion by : Eystein S. Husebye

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 867 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was seismic monitoring under a nuclear test ban - an application of scienti fic knowledge and modern technology for a political purpose. The international political objective of a comprehensive nuclear test ban provided in turn the motivation for our technical and scientific discussions. In order to obtain a historical perspec tive on the progress of the work towards a comprehensive test-ban treaty (CTB), it is necessary to go back to 1958, when a confer ence of scientific experts in Geneva made the first steps toward an international seismic monitoring system. However, agreement on actual capabilities of a monitoring system for verifying compliance with such a treaty was not achieved, and thus the conference did not lead to immediate political results. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space and under the seas, renewed interest in the seismological verification of a CTB took place. A number of countries initiated large-scale research efforts toward detecting and identifying underground nuclear explosions, and it was in this context that the large aperture seismic arrays NORSAR and LASA were established. This type of development resulted in excellent seismic data in digital form and was thus of great irnprotance to the seismological com munity.
Book Synopsis Research Required to Support Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Monitoring by : National Research Council
Download or read book Research Required to Support Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Monitoring written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 24, 1996, President Clinton signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty at the United Nations Headquarters. Over the next five months, 141 nations, including the four other nuclear weapon statesâ€"Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdomâ€"added their signatures to this total ban on nuclear explosions. To help achieve verification of compliance with its provisions, the treaty specifies an extensive International Monitoring System of seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasonic, and radionuclide sensors. This volume identifies specific research activities that will be needed if the United States is to effectively monitor compliance with the treaty provisions.
Book Synopsis Primary Seismic Waves Near Explosions by : Lynn Dale Trembly
Download or read book Primary Seismic Waves Near Explosions written by Lynn Dale Trembly and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with near source primary seismic waves generated by, the Gnome, Hardhat, Shoal and Haymaker underground nuclear explosions. Records of ground motion between 0.3 and 20.0 kilometers from the sources were analyzed in terms of displacement amplitude and energy variations with distance. The observed data have been compared to similar data from a theoretical source model to determine the adequacy of the theoretical model. The Fourier Integral has been used to obtain frequency analyses of the first half cycle of the primary displacement waves in the near source region to the observed and theoretical sources. There is some evidence that a long period displacement field may exist near the explosions, as predicted by the theoretical source. Scatter in the observed amplitude data makes it difficult to distinguish between the long period and the radiation fields. The variation with distance of total energy of the primary seismic waves indicates that the radiation field becomes representative of the energy beyond a few kilometers from the sources. When the conditions are approximated, for which the theoretical source was developed, the comparison of observed and theoretical data indicate that the theoretical source approximates the observed sources. It was found that the waveforms from the theoretical source did not approximate the waveforms from the Haymaker explosion and from one quadrant of the Shoal explosion. This is thought to be due to any combination of the following reasons: (a) the elastic-inelastic boundaries were not correctly defined for these observed sources, (b) the media were not elastic and elastic theory did not apply, and (c) the solution for the theoretical displacement pulses given by the theoretical model does not apply to all cases.
Book Synopsis Empirical Analysis of Seismic Records for Eleven Nuclear Tests at the Nevada Test Site by :
Download or read book Empirical Analysis of Seismic Records for Eleven Nuclear Tests at the Nevada Test Site written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional seismic records for eleven underground nuclear explosions were processed and analyzed (empirically) in a search for source and path related patterns in the signals. These nuclear tests were conducted between August, 1979 and April, 1980; all were located in Yucca Flat at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The seismic signals generated by these explosions were recorded on the LLNL four-station network, located at distances of 200 to 400 km from the NTS. Amplitudes were measured for consistently recorded vertical component body waves, and for vertical and transverse components of surface waves. Correlation between phase amplitudes was statistically determined, and amplitude ratios were compared for four stations for the same event, and at a single station for the complete set of events. Previous studies have shown that certain amplitude ratios are relatively unaffected by the size of the explosion but sensitive to propagation effects. For this set of events, we do not find a statistically significant change in the ratio of Pg:Lg due to different propagation paths to the four stations. We do, however, find increased variability in the amplitude measurements for the smaller events in the population considered in this study.

Book Synopsis Forensic Explosion Seismology by : So Gu Kim
Download or read book Forensic Explosion Seismology written by So Gu Kim and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses three major physical phenomena for active source seismology, namely underwater explosions, underground nuclear explosions, and large-scale on-surface chemical explosions. In particular, contributors consider how to use the technologies and applications in active source seismology and seismo-acoustics, rather than the theoretical approach for the resolution of the forensic explosion seismology in the light of an application for defense sciences. The volume also presents seismological investigations of discrimination between earthquakes and man-made explosions.
