Book Synopsis Seismic Exploration in Cold Regions by : Hans Roethlisberger
Download or read book Seismic Exploration in Cold Regions written by Hans Roethlisberger and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monograph contains a comprehensive review of the use of seismic methods and related techniques based on elastic waves, to gain information on the geometry and physical properties of the substrata in cold regions, particularly snow, ice and frozen ground. Pertinent elastic properties of these materials are described and methods for determining seismic velocities are summarized. Theories and application of reflection and refraction soundings on glaciers, continental ice sheets, ice shelves, and frozen ground are reviewed. Surveys employing surface waves, and special application of elastic waves, are described. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph describes the various kinds of foundations used for structures on permafrost with a brief discussion of foundations in areas of seasonal frost. Special attention is given to piled foundations in permafrost and the design of ventilation systems for controlling thaw under heated buildings. Appendixes outline techniques for computing the depth of freezing or of thawing, the design of refrigeration systems for artificial freezing, and the recommended procedure in the USSR for static pile tests. Included in the main text are 51 figures and 62 selected references. (Author).

Book Synopsis Theoretical Glaciology by : K. Hutter
Download or read book Theoretical Glaciology written by K. Hutter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose and scope of this book on theoretical glaciology is outlined in the Introduction. Its aim is to study the theoretical aspects of'ice mechanics' and the 'dynamics of ice masses in a geophysical environment. For the mature reader, the book can serve as an introduction to glaciology. How ever, this is not what I would regard as advisible. Glaciology is an inter disciplinary science in which many special scientific disciplines play their part, from descriptive geography to fairly abstract mathematics. Advance ment will evolve from a merger of two or more branches of scientific specialization. In the last 20 years, several researchers in different fields of glaciology have written books emphasizing the aspects of their specialities and I have listed some which are known to me at the end of the Introduction. When glancing through these books, one recognizes that the mathematical aspects of glaciology are generally glossed over and, to date, there seems to be nothing available which concentrates on these. Therefore, I have written this book in an effort to close the gap and no apologies are offered for the mathematical emphasis. Rather, I believe that this neglect has, to a certain extent, aggra vated progress in the modelling of glaciology problems.
