Book excerpt: The historic Eixample district of Barcelona is characterised by its beautiful avenues, laid out in grid across the city. At first impression, the buildings lining these avenues appear identical, an unending façade built to house the new Barcelona of the 20th Century. The unreinforced masonry buildings that typify the development remain in use today, largely unaltered since their construction. Unreinforced masonry buildings are among the most vulnerable structures to damage from seismic actions. For the masonry buildings of the Eixample that house over 15% of the population of Barcelona, this is no exception. This study performs a seismic analysis on a typical masonry building of the Eixample to estimate and assess this damage. By doing so, it aims to estimate the likely damage due to seismic actions, to identify critical elements of the structures and to quantify the need for seismic risk maintenance and response plans. The analysis uses the N2 Capacity Spectrum Method (Fajfar, 2000), adopted by Eurocode 8, to determine the displacement demand of possible earthquake scenarios. A seismic hazard analysis determines the seismic demand using deterministic, probabilistic and current European and Spanish code provisions. The seismic demand is then compared to the results of a non-linear pushover analysis completed using software DIANA (Version 9.4). The model geometry was based upon plans of a building that well represents the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample. Results indicate a displacement demand to Spanish code provisions that corresponds to a substantial level of damage, in accordance with the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS 98) damage criteria. A moderate level of damage is derived from the probabilistic seismic scenario. Similar to previous studies, these results indicate a significant risk of seismic damage. The analysis has isolated critical structural elements that control the global response and damage during seismic action. This information can be used to develop inspection and maintenance plans to limit the risk of seismic damage. This study highlights the real risk of seismic damage to the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample district. It determines appropriate building maintenance procedures, and reinforces the need for seismic response planning to best manage the significant expected social and infrastructure demands should such a disastrous event ever occur.

During 90 years of construction, the model that gives the characteristic layout to the district was perfected. As a result of this process, the Eixample district is the most representative one of the city of Barcelona. The district of the Eixample is a densely populated area where nearly 70% of its buildings have a structural system that consists of unreinforced masonry bearing walls, a system that have been demonstrated to be structurally vulnerable in case of seismic hazard. In this study, a seismic analysis is performed on a building that represents well the typology found in the district. The selected building corresponds to the ones located at the sides of the square blocks that conform the district. The N2 capacity spectrum method (Fajfar, 2000) recommended by the European Normative Eurocode 8 is used in this study to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample district. In this project the pushover or capacity curve is determined by 3Muri, a software working under the FME method (Frame by Macro Elements) which have been developed by the University of Genoa. The seismic hazard is characterized by the demand spectra formulated by the Eurocode 8, the Spanish normative NCSE--‐02 and by demand spectra developed for the city of Barcelona by Irizarry (2004) using probabilistic and deterministic approaches. The results of the analysis indicate that the damage scenarios differ substantially when applying the mentioned demand spectres. The Spanish norm, as well as the Eurocode 8 demand spectra, have been demonstrated to be less demanding than both probabilistic and deterministic approaches developed by Irizarry. The study highlights the non--‐negligible seismic risk of the masonry buildings.

Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research in the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic resistance analysis and design, as well as new seismic resistance technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stresses verification, clear concepts for limit state verification of the seismic resistance of masonry buildings have recently been introduced in the seismic codes. Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art earthquake-resistant design of masonry structures, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work in order to make the book useful for a broader application in the design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed in traditional masonry construction systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of masonry construction, unreinforced, confined, and reinforced, as well as masonry in filled reinforced concrete frames, are explained. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book discusses the problems of seismic repair, retrofitand rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical houses in urban nuclei. Methods of strengthening the masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.

Masonry buildings comprise probably the greatest share of overall housing stock, and in turn, understanding their performance during earthquakes is a pivotal problem in seismic regions. Masonry Construction in Active Seismic Regions presents details on the kinds of masonry building found in seismic regions of the world. The title describes interventions, such as retrofitted solutions, dynamic identification, and improved construction after earthquakes, that are equally applicable to regions of moderate and high seismicity. The book covers representative masonry buildings from active seismic regions, the material properties of masonry construction, numerical modelling techniques and computational advances, seismic performance of non-engineered masonry buildings, resilience in typical construction, retrofitting, and the cultural values and structural characterization of heritage masonry buildings in active seismic regions. This book is unique in its global and systematic coverage of masonry construction in seismic regions. - Identifies the material properties of masonry construction from a seismic perspective - Covers representative masonry buildings from active seismic regions, providing a benchmark to understand existing building stocks - Provides numerical modelling techniques and reviews computational advances, including a large test database - Details the seismic performance of non-engineered masonry buildings, as well as the cultural values and structural characterisation of heritage masonry constructions - Analyses typical or vernacular constructions which have earthquake resilient features, such as Dhajji-Dewari, Borbone, Pombalino, and Himis

Book excerpt: This book assembles, identifies and highlights the most recent developments in Rehabilitation and retrofitting of historical and heritage structures. This is an issue of paramount importance in countries with great built cultural heritage that also suffer from high seismicity, such as the countries of the eastern Mediterranean basin. Heritage structures range from traditional residential constructions to monumental structures, ancient temples, towers, castles, etc. It is generally recognized that these structures present particular difficulties in seismic response calculation through computer simulation due to the complexity of the structural system which is, generally, inhomogeneous, with several contact problems, gaps/joints, nonlinearities and brittleness in material constituents. This book contains selected papers from the ECCOMAS Thematic Conferences on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN) that were held in Corfu, Greece in 2011 and Kos, Greece in 2013. The Conferences brought together the scientific communities of Computational Mechanics, Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering in an effort to facilitate the exchange of ideas in topics of mutual interest and to serve as a platform for establishing links between research groups with complementary activities.

Two models of a typical structure, which conforms to the requirements of Eurocode 8 for simple buildings, have been tested on a shaking-table by subjected them to a series of simulated seismic ground motions. At the same time, a series of confined, as well as referential plain masonry walls have been also tested to study the vertical load-bearing capacity and seismic behaviour. The measuremed response of the walls and models to shaking table motion and observed mechanism of structural behaviour have been used to develop a rational method for seismic resistance verification of confined masonry structures. Taking into consideration the predominant first vibration mode shape and shear-beam type shape of vibration, the story resistance envelope is calculated by subdividing the structure into individual confined masonry wall panels. Good correlation between experimental and calculated envelopes has been obtained, which indicates the validity of the proposed method.

Book excerpt: Building structures using masonry is one of the most widely adopted construction practices. However, its seismic performance in earthquake prone regions is a major concern. Majority of the research work which has been carried out for studying the failure pattern of masonry, either targets in-plane failure or out-of-plane failure of walls. However, various survey reports on the damage caused by earthquakes mention about failure of the corner walls of masonry structures such as those situated at the end of a row of structures, in a peculiar manner. Failure in such walls is characterized by the simultaneous overturning of a portion of orthogonal walls which is possible only if lateral loads act along the corners, implying each corner wall is subjected to bidirectional loading. Since the literature addressing such failure, are limited, therefore this study has been carried out to explore the reasons leading to corner failure of masonry structures. In this study, in order to examine the failure pattern at corner in dry masonry structures, finite element (FE) technique was adopted. Various masonry models with varying vertical load were subjected to dynamic loading along the corner to observe their combined effect on failure pattern. This analysis showed the pattern of propagation of crack through the bed joint along under varying dead load conditions. Since it is not possible to perform FE analysis for all the masonry structures, mathematical relations were derived to calculate the limiting acceleration at which corner failure can occur. These relations were obtained by assuming feasible failure mechanisms and applying the concept of limit state analysis. For studying the failure pattern of corner in mortar bonded masonry, the FE approach adopted for dry masonry was extended. Micro-modelling which is mostly adopted for modelling mortar bonded masonry was modified by introducing the concept of equivalent friction to simulate the behaviour of mortar in shear. Cracks were observed to pass through the bricks along with the bed joints which lead to toe crushing due to overturning of failure portion. Through this study an understanding of failure of the corner has been developed.
