Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stratigraphic evolution of the Cenozoic strata was investigated through the interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic surveys, integrated with wireline and biostratigraphic data. Results show that the Cenozoic stratigraphy of the Dampier and Barrow Sub-basins in the North Carnarvon Basin, NW Shelf of Australia, is characterized by two second-order sequences, separated by a late-Miocene to Pliocene sequence boundary. The Dampier and Barrow Sub-basins contain: 1) Base Paleocene to Oligocene siliciclastic-carbonates, 2) Oligocene to early-middle Miocene non-tropical carbonate ramps, 3) early-middle Miocene to late Miocene-Pliocene tropical rimmed platforms, 4) a middle Miocene to Pliocene siliciclastic deposit, 5) late Miocene-Pliocene to Pleistocene non-tropical carbonate ramps and 6) Pleistocene to Recent tropical rimmed platforms. The initiation of tropical reef production in the North Carnarvon Basin was likely triggered by local climate, linked to the strengthening of the Leeuwin Current and the northwards migration of the NW Shelf to tropical latitudes. The temporary demise of carbonate reef production was likely a combination of 1) the closure of the Indonesian Throughflow to the North Carnarvon Basin, amplifying regional cooling trends and 2) rapid rise in relative sea-level in response to increasing subsidence rates from Australian and Indonesian Miocene to Recent collisional tectonics. The temporary onset of siliciclastic sedimentation in the Dampier Sub-basin was possibly due to 1) a fall in relative sea-level 2) tectonic uplift and 3) the onset of middle Miocene aridity, decreasing vegetation coverage and increasing the erosion rates of the Pilbara hinterland. This study presents new insight on the evolution of carbonate margins and slopes during the Cenozoic in the context of Australia's tectonic and climatic changes. It also provides a detailed characterization of the Cenozoic overburden in the Dampier and Barrow Sub-basins, which is essential to access for exploration geophysics and future drilling operations. Lastly, this work provides an additional analogue for mixed carbonate-siliciclastic reservoirs in SE Asia.

Book Synopsis Reservoir Characterization by : Larry Lake
Download or read book Reservoir Characterization written by Larry Lake and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reservoir Characterization is a collection of papers presented at the Reservoir Characterization Technical Conference, held at the Westin Hotel-Galleria in Dallas on April 29-May 1, 1985. Conference held April 29-May 1, 1985, at the Westin Hotel—Galleria in Dallas. The conference was sponsored by the National Institute for Petroleum and Energy Research, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Reservoir characterization is a process for quantitatively assigning reservoir properties, recognizing geologic information and uncertainties in spatial variability. This book contains 19 chapters, and begins with the geological characterization of sandstone reservoir, followed by the geological prediction of shale distribution within the Prudhoe Bay field. The subsequent chapters are devoted to determination of reservoir properties, such as porosity, mineral occurrence, and permeability variation estimation. The discussion then shifts to the utility of a Bayesian-type formalism to delineate qualitative ""soft"" information and expert interpretation of reservoir description data. This topic is followed by papers concerning reservoir simulation, parameter assignment, and method of calculation of wetting phase relative permeability. This text also deals with the role of discontinuous vertical flow barriers in reservoir engineering. The last chapters focus on the effect of reservoir heterogeneity on oil reservoir. Petroleum engineers, scientists, and researchers will find this book of great value.

Book Synopsis Seismic Geomorphology by : R. J. Davies
Download or read book Seismic Geomorphology written by R. J. Davies and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are poised to embark on a new era of discovery in the study of geomorphology. The discipline has a long and illustrious history, but in recent years an entirely new way of studying landscapes and seascapes has been developed. It involves the use of 3D seismic data. Just as CAT scans allow medical staff to view our anatomy in 3D, seismic data now allows Earth scientists to do what the early geomorphologists could only dream of - view tens and hundreds of square kilometres of the Earth's subsurface in 3D and therefore see for the first time how landscapes have evolved through time. This volume demonstrates how Earth scientists are starting to use this relatively new tool to study the dynamic evolution of a range of sedimentary environments.
Book Synopsis The Geometry and Growth of Normal Faults by : C. Childs
Download or read book The Geometry and Growth of Normal Faults written by C. Childs and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal faults are the primary structures that accommodate extension of the brittle crust. This volume provides an up-to-date overview of current research into the geometry and growth of normal faults. The 23 research papers present the findings of outcrop and subsurface studies of the geometrical evolution of faults from a number of basins worldwide, complemented by analogue and numerical modelling studies of fundamental aspects of fault kinematics. The topics addressed include how fault length changes with displacement, how faults interact with one another, the controls of previous structure on fault evolution and the nature and origin of fault-related folding. This volume will be of interest to those wishing to develop a better understanding of the structural geological aspects of faulting, from postgraduate students to those working in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume has evolved from papers written in memory of Professor David Roberts. They summarize the key findings of recent research on passive margins, from tectonics, bathymetry, stratigraphy and sedimentation, structural evolution and magmatism. Papers include analyses of the central and southern Atlantic margins of South America and Africa, papers on magmatism and extension in the NE Brazilian margin and on the Cote de Ivoire margin, rift architectures of the NW Red Sea margin, tectonics of the eastern Mediterranean margin, salt tectonics of passive margins of the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil, and papers on the NW Shelf margin of Australia. The volume provides readers with new insights into the complexities of passive margin systems that are in reality, not so passive.
Book Synopsis 3-D Seismic Exploration by : Robert J. Graebner
Download or read book 3-D Seismic Exploration written by Robert J. Graebner and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 3D seismic method evolved as a natural outgrowth of 2D seismic exploration. This reprint volume attempts to chronicle both the evolution and the state-of-the-art of the 3D seismic method. Papers selected for this volume sample the literature from the early 1970s through 1998. They were drawn primarily from Geophysics, Geophysical Prospecting, The Leading Edge, and First Break. From these journals and publications alone, more than 200 candidate articles were identified dealing with some aspect of 3D seismic exploration. Selection criteria included historical significance, tutorial value, novelty, theoretical importance, practicality, and cost-benefit analysis. The papers are arranged chronologically. The papers in this volume and their rich reference lists cover virtually all of the relevant work on exploration 3D through 1998. The chapters are "The Early Work," "3-D Field Methods," "3-D Processing Imaging," "3-D Case Histories/Interpretation," "Shallow 3-D Seismic Methods," and "3-D Economics."
