Book Synopsis Prehistoric Farming in Europe by : Graeme Barker
Download or read book Prehistoric Farming in Europe written by Graeme Barker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-07-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon his own extensive knowledge of European archaeology, Graeme Barker has impressively integrated the full range of archaeological data to produce in this book a masterly account of prehistoric farming in Europe on a unique scale. He makes use of modern archaeological techniques to reconstruct the lives of prehistoric farmers in remarkable detail. Not only do we now have a vivid picture of the prehistoric farmyard, but we know what animals were kept, how they were fed and why they were bred. Evidence for crops grown and techniques of cultivation and husbandry helps recreate the prehistoric landscape. Even the social organisation that determined the use of resources, and provided the crucial stimulus for agricultural change, can be relived. Graeme Barker develops his argument through analogies with the agricultural history of classical and medieval Europe and concludes that today's industrial farmers can learn much from the successes and failures of early European farming.

Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years, archaeological research in Spain and Portugal has undergone profound changes in theoretical orientation, changes that parallel the political and social transformations in those countries over the past generation. These Proceedings of the First International Conference in America on Iberian Archaeology demonstrate the increasingly strong implantation of processualist approaches and their useful integration with historicist orientations. Contributions ranging from the Neolithic to the Iron Age provide a representative sample of the current state of archaeological research in Iberia.

Book Synopsis Mountains of Silver and Rivers of Gold by : Ann Neville
Download or read book Mountains of Silver and Rivers of Gold written by Ann Neville and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional picture of the Phoenicians in Iberia is that of wily traders drawn there by the irresistible lure of the fabulous mineral wealth of the El Dorado of the ancient world. However, a remarkable series of archaeological discoveries, starting in the 1960s, have transformed our understanding of the Phoenicians and allow us to glimpse a picture of life in the Far West that is far richer, and more complex, than the traditional mercantile hypothesis. Drawing on literary and archaeological sources, this books offers an in-depth analysis of the Phoenicians in Iberia: their settlements, material culture, contacts with the local people, and activities; agricultural and cultural, as well as commercial. It concludes that the Phoenician presence in Iberia gave rise to a truly western form of Phoenician culture, one that was enriched and drew from contacts with the local population, forming a characteristic identity, still visible on the arrival of the Romans in the Peninsula.
Book Synopsis National-Socialist Archaeology in Europe and its Legacies by : Martijn Eickhoff
Download or read book National-Socialist Archaeology in Europe and its Legacies written by Martijn Eickhoff and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume is dedicated to national-socialist archaeology as a Europe-wide phenomenon. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Although in the final instance, it generally failed to displace the national archaeologies in Europe, the volume also analyses the long-term impact of national-socialist rule on the development of European archaeology. How did the attempts to create a unified European archaeology after 1945 continue to influence networks, methods and terminologies, institutional structures, or popular representations of the early past?
Book Synopsis Roman Spain (Routledge Revivals) by : Leonard A. Curchin
Download or read book Roman Spain (Routledge Revivals) written by Leonard A. Curchin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged, parched landscape and fierce inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula resisted Rome’s best generals for two centuries. Roman Spain tells the story of this conquest, making use of the latest archaeological evidence to explore the social, religious, political and economic implications of the transition from a tribal community accustomed to grisly human sacrifices to a civilised, Latin-speaking provincial society. From the fabled kingdom of Tartesos to the triumph of Christianity, Professor Curchin traces the evolution of Hispano-Roman cults, the integration of Spain into the Roman economy, cultural ‘resistance’ to Romanisation, and surveys the chief cities of the Roman administration as well as conditions in the countryside. Special emphasis is placed on social relationships: soldier and civilian, the emperor and the provincials, patrons and clients, the upper and lower classes, women and the family.

Book Synopsis Land-use and Prehistory in South-East Spain by : A. Gilman
Download or read book Land-use and Prehistory in South-East Spain written by A. Gilman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a major research programme, and originally published in 1985, this book looked to provide an economic foundation for reinterpreting the Neolithic-Bronze Age sequence of South-east Spain in terms of emergent social complexity. The cultural evolution of the area had already been considered in terms of influence from the eastern Mediterranean but this book uses site catchment analysis to give an economic baseline for all thirty-five of the better-known prehistoric settlements of the region. Site catchment analysis assumes that people minimised transport costs in production and that ancient and modern resource spaces correspond systematically. This research therefore studied modern land use and combined it with evidence from historical, archaeological and geomorphological investigation. The book shows the increasing social complexity evident in the archaeological record emerging as a result of progressive intensification of agricultural technique. Offering a complete coherent evolutionary model for the archaeological sequence of the region’s prehistory, this book is a worthy in-depth study for prehistorians, geographers and anyone interested in the history of the western Mediterranean.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Colonialism by : Claire L. Lyons
Download or read book The Archaeology of Colonialism written by Claire L. Lyons and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of Colonialism demonstrates how artifacts are not only the residue of social interaction but also instrumental in shaping identities and communities. Claire Lyons and John Papadopoulos summarize the complex issues addressed by this collection of essays. Four case studies illustrate the use of archaeological artifacts to reconstruct social structures. They include ceramic objects from Mesopotamian colonists in fourth-millennium Anatolia; the Greek influence on early Iberian sculpture and language; the influence of architecture on the West African coast; and settlements across Punic Sardinia that indicate the blending of cultures. The remaining essays look at the roles myth, ritual, and religion played in forming colonial identities. In particular, they discuss the cultural middle ground established among Greeks and Etruscans; clothing as an instrument of European colonialism in nineteenth-century Oceania; sixteenth-century Andean urban planning and kinship relations; and the Dutch East India Company settlement at the Cape of Good Hope.
