Book excerpt: In a provocative and practical look at modern stress, Seeking Serenity offers an empowering new message: Stress can serve as a guide to living our happiest and healthiest lives. In Seeking Serenity, stress columnist Amanda Enayati challenges our long-held assumptions about stress, painting a groundbreaking picture that separates myth from reality when it comes to what is commonly referred to as the plague of modern life. Weaving together stories, research from science, history, philosophy and diverse faiths, and everyday exercises, she crafts a fascinating tale that begins with the behind-the-scenes machinations of corporate villains and ends in the power of our stories to shape our realities. We are living in an era of dramatic highs and lows, with lives that move at a pace and intensity impossible at any other time in history. These contradictions throw us off-kilter, out of harmony and balance, creating what we perceive as never-ending and destructive cycles of stress. But life itself has always been—and will always be—a series of fluctuations: the good days, the bad days, the excruciating days. The key to mastering stress lies in the way we experience it. Seeking Serenity presents ten revolutionary principles developed from the emerging science of stress and reinforced by literature, philosophy and age-old spiritual wisdom that help us to differentiate between destructive and constructive stress, and to master stress in the everyday by learning how to: Shift our perceptions to interpret inevitable challenges in a way that serves us better; Embrace a narrative that casts stress as a pathway to adaptation and growth; and Commit to breaks, buffers, and protective practices that will minimize and neutralize the adverse impacts of toxic stress. Drawing on extensive research and remarkable case studies, Seeking Serenity presents a clear and accessible action plan to achieving more joyful and productive lives, stronger communities and a better world.

Book excerpt: This is a cheerful and optimistic book on the pleasures to be found every day.Intended for those seeking the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the author points out that you should find the jewels strewn along the way instead. Marden offers twenty-six chapters of common-sense advice for the average man or woman who is overworked, striving and struggling to get ahead—what he believes to be the American way of life. With chapters including “The Strain to Keep Up Appearances,” and “Postponed Enjoyment,” the author offers hopeful, inspiring, and illuminating messages and ideas, pointing out that happiness is more a condition of mind than of environment, and he offers the reader many opportunities to find joy in the common things found in daily life. Pointing out that there is a positive chemistry in a cheerful mind, so therefore health and happiness are related, Marden goes on to show how happiness can be cultivated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wishing to be healthy and happy are natural qualities of body and mind we are bestowed with. They are not purchasable commodities The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being. Our focus is so narrow that we are concerned only with physical health and indifferent to other domains of health as prescribed and described by the WHO. It is the mind that sets us on the path of mental, social and even spiritual well-being and has a profound influence on our physical well-being too. Meditation, I would say, is the panacea that can bestow upon us this wealth of health in all these domains defined. Barring a few conditions that need surgical or medical treatment, meditation can help prevent some diseases and check the progress of many others. According to some statistics carried out, about 10,000 and odd diseases are known to occur. Out of them hardly 500 are treatable and curable despite vast infrastructure and state of art technology in the field of medicine. The book doesn’t undermine the importance and utility of medical sciences, but it is only a reminder of our natural capabilities of mind and body to keep up health that is synonymous with the prevention of disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tagore S English Writings Originals And Translations Have Not Received The Attention That They Deserve. The Purpose Of This Edition Is To Make The English Writings Of Tagore Available To The Widest Possible Range Of Readers Interested In The Writings Of Tagore All Over The World, With Just The Bare, Minimum Information Necessary For Appreciating The Writings, And Leave The Critical Assessment To The Readers Themselves. There May Be Two Possible Reasons For The Neglect Of Tagore S English Writings. Firstly, Tagore S Prolific Output, Shakespearean Felicity And Protean Plasticity As A Bengali Poet, Who, Though Well-Versed In English, Chose To Write In The Medium Of His Mother Tongue For Nearly The First Fifty Years Of His Life, And There Is Hardly Any Literary Form That He Did Not Touch Upon And Turn Into Gold. His Creative Genius Found Expression In Poems, Plays, Novels, Essays, Short Stories, Satirical Pieces, Textbooks For Children, And Songs Of All Kinds. The Only Literary Form That He Did Not Try Is Epic. But In His Long, Eventful And Creative Eighty Years Of Life He Virtually Lived An Epic. It Is Largely Due To His Mighty Stature As A Bengali Poet That Nobody Really Bothered About His English Writings And His Own Translations Of His Own Writings.Secondly, It Is Owing To The Supposedly Poor Quality Of His Translations Subsequent To The Translation Of Gitanjali. It Was Only After Tagore Received The Nobel Prize For Literature In 1913 That There Was A Growing Demand For His Writings In The West, And As Tagore Was Not Apparently Satisfied By The Translations That Others Mainly His Admirers Made, He Began To Translate His Writings Himself. But The Tremendous Haste With Which He Had To Translate, Possibly Affected The Quality Of Translations. Come What May, The Point Is Whether Tagore S English Translations Are Good Or Bad, Whether The Translation Furthered His Reputation Or Damaged It, Is Immaterial. The Fact Of The Matter Is That They Are His, And His Own Translation Of Whatever Quality It May Be Is More Valuable To A Tagore Lover Than The Best Translation Made By Somebody Else, As Van Gogh S One Original Single Scratch Is More Valuable Than The Best Possible Copy By Some Other Artist. The Value Of Tagore S English Writings Lies Here : They Constitute An Important Part Of His Total Oeuvre, Add A New Magnificent Dimension To It And Offer Us A Glimpse Into The Mystique Of The Creative Anxiety That Could Have Haunted Even The Greatest Writer Of The Twentieth Century, About His Possible Reception In An Alien Culture.

This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People want to live a healthy and happy later life. A large body of literature shows the close association between health status and happiness and between health and active engagement (in work, exercise, and social and religious activities). However, the causation between the two can run both ways, and it is difficult to determine the causal effect with cross-sectional data. Various authors have shown the significant influence of socioeconomic factors and human needs on older people’s health status and happiness. A better understanding of the factors affecting healthy and happy aging is essential for policymaking to improve the well-being of older people. The availability of data from HRS-family studies in several Asian countries (CHARLS in China, LASI in India, JSTAR in Japan, KLoSA in Korea, IFLS in Indonesia, HART in Thailand, MARS in Malaysia, and Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in Viet Nam) (see Gateway to Global Aging Data) provides an excellent opportunity for researchers to examine factors affecting health and happiness among older adults within and across Asian countries. This research topic aims to gather papers that investigate the socioeconomic, attitudinal, and behavioural factors affecting the health status and happiness/life satisfaction of older adults in Asia. The dependent variables may include physical health, mental health, disability (ADL/IADL), cognitive functioning), self-rated health, health expenditure, feeling of happiness and life satisfaction. The independent variables may be age, gender, marital status, place of residence, educational level, active engagement (work, exercise, social and religious activities), family and social relationship and support, outlook in life, smoking, drinking, and access to and utilization of healthcare services, etc. Manuscripts can be based on individual countries or cross-country analysis, preferably using the panel data to establish the causal effects of the independent variables on the dependent variables.

Ignorance towards the purpose of life and the short-cut approach towards health management are the two major causes. As a result, man is not able to attain a minimum level of good health. Having already suffered, it is now time to wake-up. Aging and death are natural, but untimely functional deterioration and crippling life is unnatural. No soul prefers to choose sickness or miseries when she decides to join the planate earth. Rather, she selects the environment that can facilitate her to get free from the debts of her past. Then, there may be a time when the soul could say "This birth I am here to sing, and cerebrate the song of Life.
