Book excerpt: During World War II the British imprisoned many German and Italian prisoners of war and civilian internees in India. The less co-operative prisoners were kept under harsh conditions in camps in the Himalayan foothills. The author was a German civilian working in India at the outbreak of war and was promptly interned by the British. In 1942 Magener and another prisoner, Heins von Have, finally managed to escape. Getting out of the camp was only the prelude to the difficult task of making their way across the entire Indian sub-continent in an attempt to reach friendly territory. Disguising themselves as British officers, the two Germans made an epic journey across India and through British forces on the Burma frontier in an attempt to link up with advancing Japanese forces. Ironically, the Japanese unit they finally located did not believe their story and they came close to being executed as spies. His grippingly told personal narrative of a German's escape from Allied custody is unique in the annals of prisoner-of-war escape and evasion.

Then there was business project management, a tool described as 'the wave of the future'. Where are architects in all this, professionals whose work has always been project-driven? There is design management in engineering, product design, graphics, packaging, management theory and even in politics. Construction consultants talk about managing design. When are architects going to become committed to managing design? Getting There by Design adopts an architect's view to design and project management. It sets out the fundamental principles and shows how they are applied, dealing with these two topics as one indivisible subject. 'Getting There by Design' demonstrates how to: - make project efforts goal-oriented - set up a planning and monitoring basis to architectural projects - put the architect's fee calculus on a rationale basis - diagnose your firm's practice culture - develop successful teams Put your practice onto a more effective basis. Ken Allinson is an architect in private practice and principal of 'Architectural Dialogue'. He also teaches design studio and lectures on design and project management. He was formerly an associate at DEGW London and the Terry Farrell Partnership. He has practice experience in Europe, the USA and Japan and is the author of 'The Wild Card of Design' (1993).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year: 1760. Anna Greyson arrives, new to the Faeran Valley. A strange wind whispers welcome. But stranger still, an isolation grows in Anna through the deceptively broken land until she meets the man who brought her here. Alex. The last of the Bremistans who settled the Valley centuries before. Anna holds the legend he needs to rescue the Valley from the cruelty his ancestors wreaked on the land, rendering it fruitless. However, he is as fragile as the land is broken, powerless to restore it. But as Anna — ignorant of such cruelty — grows deeper in the Bremistan legend, she soon finds she cannot escape, nor does she know she should. For when Alex offers her a life that will bring her everything she longs for, the cost is too great. Yet in future shadows grows a thread of hope. Anna wraps herself around that thread while the quiet power rises in her to endure the brokenness of her world until the last hope of the Faeran Valley reveals itself, if it isn’t destroyed first. • • • • “It was the moths that first revealed the change. Grey-tipped whispers in the moonlit night. Two or three here, a single one there. White ones slipping through the darkness, silent and seemingly harmless, but present. Growing in numbers until they erupted the quiet like flutters of falling ash. There was a music in their silence. The kind of music that attached itself to hums and vibrations in the waters of the earth. The hums, the vibrations, all but imperceptible. With the dawn the moths vanished, leaving a broken land in their wake. The Elian River leaked out into fissures of streams and brooks that first appeared as watery cracks throughout the Faeran Valley. So small at first, we didn’t recognize the difference. But as the months and years passed, the Elian slipped further and deeper into the growing fractures of earth the moths had left. Trails of watery branches and veins broke the ground until it couldn’t sustain life any longer. This is what we have against the Bremistans. The land is delicate now, brittle like old bones. And I fear it is aging beyond our ability to heal it….” • • • • An epic fairytale of Love, Sacrifice, Revenge and the power to endure. We are not as strong as we think we are. Sometime we are stronger.

Book excerpt: The definition and notion of frontiers changed in the process of the transformation of the Roman world. This volume goes beyond topography to explore the meaning and impact of new frontiers as they were establised. It becomes clear that the transformation of frontiers was not a linear process in which the imperial frontiers were abandoned and the means of controlling them declined, but depended on specific circumstances. Four of the contributions deal with the frontiers of the Carolingian Empire in their political and military aspects, as well as in the context of Christian conversion and missions. Three of the contributions discuss Roman frontiers and their perception in late antiquity, demonstrating that they were not simply defence lines, but also a basis for offensive operations, a focus in elaborate exchange networks and a means of internal control. Other papers describe the frontiers of early medieval kingdoms, two of which propose theoretical models, whereas others analyse the construction and the blurring of frontiers between the empire and the kingdoms of the Visigoths, Lombards and Avars.

Book excerpt: In this, his third novel, Dr. Milton endeavors to make the titles possessed by all womenMaiden, Mother, Cronediscernible. His story concerns a triad of tensile lives, a trinity of goddesses dipped from the same hot, whorled gene pool but forged by distinctly different environments. The result is a cautionary tale replete with psychological, sociological and mystical insights related to child abuse, cancer and clairvoyance. The 'Maiden'precocious and obviously neglectedprovides the storyteller's voice. Thwarted in her attempts to gain care and affection, her abuse is reported with momentous consequences. When Llynthe 'Mother'is told by two different Oncology experts "We have nothing more to offer," she retreats to a childhood belief: High, Mountains are mystical, magical and healing. In the background a fanatical 'Crone' cruelly and sadistically cajoles from an unassailable position. On the journey to the summit of the highest mountain in North AmericaAlaska's mighty Mt Denaliextraordinary triumphs, dreadful disasters and intense meditations on mortality are revealed. Throughout the story, explanations are disclosed, which ache with a wisdom that can only be understood by those who have "been there" and earned the right. Dr. Robert Milton is a graduate of the University of Southern California's Clinical Psychology program. He has authored six books including three novels available on Amazon.com While his world travels and interests reveal a kaleidoscope of themes, his curiosity recently led him to neuro-science and religion, particularly mysticism, which is touched upon in this novel and his recent non-fiction book Your FLEXXIBLE Brain published last year. Currently he lives in Southern California with his dog, an Ozzy Shepherd, named Mr. Dugan. He can be contacted at www.robertmiltonphd.com

It is a book about the benefits of individual freedom. Schools teach children to color, write and print between the lines, observe the rules, wrap their minds in a bubble of disciplines to discourage living out of a community box. Children learn to behave as members of a managed herd, avoiding challenging that which is accepted and established by tradition. In art, however, unusual, deviant, almost outlaw behavior is admired. Artists existing outside the limits of the herd can even improve the herd. American innovators are artists causing prosperity from their thinking, acting, creating and inventive minds changing things for the better. Americans left the Old World limitations behind, where thinking and acting out of the box was discouraged, creating a New World almost 400 years ago. They proved individual freedom and creative elbowroom was the only source of prosperity, which explains American exceptionalism and what this book is all about.

Book excerpt: In the last twenty years there has been a marked increase in artists using smells in their works at the same time that scents are being used to accompany plays, films, and music. There is also an increase in ambient scenting in stores and hotels and leading chefs are adding unusual scents to cuisine. The book explores these olfactory activities and the aesthetic and ethical issues they raise as well as answering the traditional disparagement of the sense of smell by leading intellectuals such as Kant, Darwin, and Freud, drawing on current science, social science, and humanities as well as literature.
