Book Synopsis Evaluation of Seeds of Science by : Pete Goldschmidt
Download or read book Evaluation of Seeds of Science written by Pete Goldschmidt and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evaluation focuses on the Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading: Effective Tools for Developing Literacy through Science in the Early Grades ("Seeds/Roots") model of science-literacy integration. The evaluation is based on a cluster randomized design of 100 teachers, half of which were in the treatment group. Multi-level models are employed to account for the clustering of students within teachers and teachers within schools. Four primary outcomes of interest are examined: science content, vocabulary, reading and writing. Additional analyses focus on the impact of teacher and student background, instructional methods, and teacher-self efficacy. Quantitative results indicate that the "Seeds/Roots" intervention resulted in statistically and substantively higher student performance in science content, vocabulary, and writing. Teacher background and self-efficacy are generally unrelated to student performance. Inquiry-based teachers enhanced treatment effects. Despite "Seeds/Roots" designed integration, teachers tended to focus on the science aspect when considering time requirements to be longer than a standard unit. Qualitative results indicate that teachers overwhelmingly found the "Seeds/Roots" unit usable, effective, and engaging. Two appendices are included. (Contains 33 tables and 16 footnotes.).

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading: Effective Tools for Developing Literacy Through Science in the Early Grades by : Pete Goldschmidt
Download or read book Evaluation of Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading: Effective Tools for Developing Literacy Through Science in the Early Grades written by Pete Goldschmidt and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evaluation focuses on the Planets and Moons unit of the "Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading: Effective Tools for Developing Literacy through Science in the Early Grades" ("Seeds/Roots") model of science-literacy integration. The evaluation is based on a cluster randomized design of 86 teachers, half of whom were in the treatment group. Multilevel models are employed to account for the clustering of students within teachers. Science outcomes are measured using science content, nature of science, and science inquiry outcomes, while literacy is measured using vocabulary, reading, and writing assessments. Additional analyses focus on the impact of teacher and student backgrounds, student attitudes, instructional methods, and teacher self-efficacy. Quantitative results indicate that the "Seeds/Roots" intervention demonstrates equivocal effects, statistically and substantively impacting student performance on the nature of science assessment and in vocabulary but not reading nor writing. There is suggestive evidence that the intervention improves science content performance. Teacher background and self-efficacy are generally unrelated to student performance, although teacher perception of implementation quality is related to outcomes. Although limited by data availability, exploratory results suggest that the intervention could be effective in English Language Learner (ELL-only) classrooms. Qualitative results indicate that treatment and control teachers noted that prior student literacy preparation impacted student performance, and empirical results, to some extent, corroborate the impact of this intake characteristic. Treatment teachers overwhelmingly found the "Seeds/Roots" unit usable, effective, and engaging--although requiring additional time to complete compared to the standard unit. (Contains 33 tables and 18 footnotes.) [Funding for this paper was provided by a grant from the SEEDS of Science/Roots of Reading Project.].
Download or read book Seeds of Science written by Mark Lynas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mark Lynas is a saint' Sunday Times 'Fluent, persuasive and surely right.' Evening Standard Mark Lynas was one of the original GM field wreckers. Back in the 1990s – working undercover with his colleagues in the environmental movement – he would descend on trial sites of genetically modified crops at night and hack them to pieces. Two decades later, most people around the world – from New York to China – still think that 'GMO' foods are bad for their health or likely to damage the environment. But Mark has changed his mind. This book explains why. In 2013, in a world-famous recantation speech, Mark apologised for having destroyed GM crops. He spent the subsequent years touring Africa and Asia, and working with plant scientists who are using this technology to help smallholder farmers in developing countries cope better with pests, diseases and droughts. This book lifts the lid on the anti-GMO craze and shows how science was left by the wayside as a wave of public hysteria swept the world. Mark takes us back to the origins of the technology and introduces the scientific pioneers who invented it. He explains what led him to question his earlier assumptions about GM food, and talks to both sides of this fractious debate to see what still motivates worldwide opposition today. In the process he asks – and answers – the killer question: how did we all get it so wrong on GMOs? 'An important contribution to an issue with enormous potential for benefiting humanity.' Stephen Pinker 'I warmly recommend it.' Philip Pullman

Book excerpt: This project was initiated in order to evaluate two literacy and science integrated instruction units, "Shoreline Science" and "Terrarium Investigations," designed by the Lawrence Hall of Science "Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading" Project ("Seeds/Roots"). We examined how the integrated units affect student interest, motivation, and learning, as well as evaluating the units' quality, usability, and utility using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Through analyses of student performance and teacher interviews, we found "Shoreline Science" and "Terrarium Investigations" beneficial to both students and teachers. Teachers were highly motivated to use the materials, and "Shoreline Science" and "Terrarium Investigations" students learned significantly more than the control group students in all science and literacy measures on which the differences were expected. The following are appended: (1) Terrarium Investigations Results on Four Groups; (2) Teacher Interview Protocol; (3) Shoreline Science Teacher Profiles; (4) Shoreline Science Coding Summary; (5) Terrarium Investigations Teacher Profiles; and (6) Terrarium Investigations Coding Summary. (Contains 16 footnotes and 23 tables.).
