Book Synopsis Seeds of Blood and Beauty by : Ann Lindsay
Download or read book Seeds of Blood and Beauty written by Ann Lindsay and published by Birlinn Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeds of Blood and Beauty follows the exploits of the great Scottish plant collectors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; men who left their native shores in search of exotic specimens, often risking life and limb for the sake of botany in some of the world’s most remote and dangerous places. Ann Lindsay introduces a large and varied cast of explorers, featuring men such as William Wright (1735–1810), who left the quiet Fife town of Crieff for Jamaica, and Aberdonian Francis Masson (1741–1805), who metamorphosed from an introspective under-gardener at Kew Gardens to an intrepid pioneer who faced gangs of bandits and poisonous snakes in Africa in pursuit of new botanical discoveries. As well as providing insights into the purposes and practicalities of scientific exploration over three centuries and examining the astonishing contribution these pioneers made in their field, Seeds of Blood and Beauty also shows how social change in Britain and abroad influenced botanical research and how this was reflected in Scotland's gardens. The result is a fascinating and informative book combining biography, history and horticulture.

Book excerpt: A popular health writer gets down to the nuts and bolts of these superfoods—from almonds and quinoa to chia and hemp seeds. Nuts and seeds such as almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds are bursting with vital nutrients. Even just a handful is rich with vitamins, minerals and fats, all of which we need, and which team up to help your heart, brain and waistline. As little as an ounce a day provides invaluable fiber, protein, and immune-boosting minerals. Nuts and seeds contain mono and polyunsaturated fats, healthful fats which are essential to maintaining the normal structure of every cell in our bodies. Meats, full-fat dairy, fried foods and processed foods are where the harmful forms of saturated and trans fats are found. Research shows that diets high in these unhealthy fats can lead to a host of diseases. Choosing healthy fats lowers cholesterol and enriches cell development, growth and repair. Nuts and Seeds is “a superb treatise on the benefits of those foodstuffs” (Books Monthly). “If you want to add more nuts and seeds into your diet, reading this book can be very helpful. Also, diversifying both the kind of nuts and how they are prepared is very interesting and she highlights this in the book.” —Coffee and Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Deftly showcases 600 unique species from across the globe and reveals the wonders of nature. . . . Recommended.” —Library Journal Seeds are nature’s consummate survivors. The next time you admire a field of waving green grassland or a stunning grove of acacia, stop to consider how it got that way—often against incredible odds. Seeds can survive freezing temperatures and drought. They can pass through our digestive systems without damage and weather a trip across the ocean, hitching a ride on marine debris. The Book of Seeds takes readers through six hundred of the world’s seed species, revealing their extraordinary beauty and rich diversity. Each page pairs a beautifully composed photo of a seed—life-size, and, in some cases, enlarged to display fine detail—with a short description, a map showing distribution, and information on conservation status. The whole spectrum of seeds is covered here. There are prolific species like corn and less widely distributed species, like the brilliant blue seeds of the traveler’s palm or the bird of paradise flower. There are tiny seeds and seeds weighing up to forty pounds. And while seeds in all their shapes, sizes, and colors grant us sustenance, there are even some we would be wise to treat with caution, such as the rosary pea, whose seeds are considered toxic. The essential guide to these complex plant creations, The Book of Seeds offers readers a rare, up-close look that will inspire scientists and nature lovers alike. “Handsome and handy.” —New York Times “A well-written primer on seed anatomy, evolution, and use, including conservation.” —Huntia

Book excerpt: Diabetes, also known as Diabetes Mellitus, occurs when the body is unable to make proper use of glucose, its main energy source. As a result the level of glucose in the blood becomes too high – hyperglycemia. There are three main types of diabetes – type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. The management of diabetes is a major health challenge. Diabetes is rising day by day. India is going to become the hub for diabetes mellitus patients. Its prevalence is steadily increasing everywhere. Unfortunately lack of access to quality health care by the modern medicines is an important issue to be tackled by other therapeutic means. One of the most important therapeutic means may be indigenous products. Treatments for diabetes can include many options. In addition to conventional treatments there are certain claims made about various complementary and alternative treatments for diabetes. Complementary and alternative medicine includes health treatments that are not part of standard Western medical practice. The category encompasses a variety of disciplines that include everything from diet and exercise to mental conditioning and lifestyle changes. The benefit of taking chromium and other minerals has been studied and debated for several years. Several studies suggest that chromium supplements may improve diabetes control, but at present we don't have enough evidences. Ginseng has shown some sugar-lowering effects in fasting and after-meal blood sugar levels, as well as in A1c results but the studies were of very short term. But are the claims about various indigenous products and therapies accurate? For this we need evidences. The present research work was done to produce the evidences in support of Kasni seed and their preparations in management of hyperglycemias. The present work is a pioneer in the field of effectiveness of edible seeds on the diabetes mellitus. The book has been written in subsections. The beginning of book focuses on the impact of disease globally and the short term as well as long term consequences of the disease. Then it focuses on the existing therapies available in present era. The drawbacks of synthetic products and limitations have also been highlighted. The next section is focusing on the methodologies used for this clinical study and subsequently the results have also been presented. The last section is devoted for the discussion of the possible hypothesis regarding the effectiveness of experimental seeds and the possible conclusions.

Book Synopsis The Seeds of Life by : Edward Dolnick
Download or read book The Seeds of Life written by Edward Dolnick and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why cracking the code of human conception took centuries of wild theories, misogynist blunders, and ludicrous mistakes Throughout most of human history, babies were surprises. People knew the basics: men and women had sex, and sometimes babies followed. But beyond that the origins of life were a colossal mystery. The Seeds of Life is the remarkable and rollicking story of how a series of blundering geniuses and brilliant amateurs struggled for two centuries to discover where, exactly, babies come from. Taking a page from investigative thrillers, acclaimed science writer Edward Dolnick looks to these early scientists as if they were detectives hot on the trail of a bedeviling and urgent mystery. These strange searchers included an Italian surgeon using shark teeth to prove that female reproductive organs were not 'failed' male genitalia, and a Catholic priest who designed ingenious miniature pants to prove that frogs required semen to fertilize their eggs. A witty and rousing history of science, The Seeds of Life presents our greatest scientists struggling-against their perceptions, their religious beliefs, and their deep-seated prejudices-to uncover how and where we come from.
