Summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes Explores timescales ranging from particle transport at one extreme, to deep burial at the other Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey), enabling detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy Includes observational studies which document the processes and strata found on particular margins, in addition to numerical models and laboratory experimentation, which provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental-margin sedimentation Provides a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient margins, and an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy

Book Synopsis Geologic Modeling and Simulation by : Daniel F. Merriam
Download or read book Geologic Modeling and Simulation written by Daniel F. Merriam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation were introduced to the earth sciences about four decades ago. Modeling has proven its worth and now it is an accepted procedure for analyzing and solving geological problems. The papers in this collection are focused on modeling sediment deposition and sedimentary sequences and have a decidedly practical flavor. Some of the leading simulation packages, such as CORRELATOR, SEDFLUX, SEDpak, SEDSIM, STRATA, and STRATSIM are applied to problems in hydrocarbon exploration, oil production, groundwater development, coal-bed appraisal, geothermics, and environmental diagnosis. All of these subjects fall under the broad heading of sedimentary basin analysis. The fifteen papers in this volume are written by internationally recognized experts from academia and industry. The contributions represent the status of geologic modeling and simulation at the start of the 21st century, and will give the reader an insight into current research problems and their possible solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The innovation and refinement of the techniques and concepts ofsequence stratigraphy has been one of the most exciting andprofound developments in geology over the past thirty years.Seismic stratigraphy has now become one of the standard tools ofthe geoscientist, and there is a pressing need for an introductorytext on sequence stratigraphy. This new book sets out to define andexplain the concepts, principles and applications of thisremarkably influential approach to the study of sedimentary strata. The authors take a rigorous objective stance in evaluating thetechniques and interpretation of sequence stratigraphy - basing thetext on an internal training course developed by British Petroleum(BP). A new text on this increasingly important field A practical guide based on the experience of practisingsequence stratigraphers Based on a highly successful BP training course
Book Synopsis From Depositional Systems to Sedimentary Successions on the Norwegian Continental Margin by : Allard W. Martinius
Download or read book From Depositional Systems to Sedimentary Successions on the Norwegian Continental Margin written by Allard W. Martinius and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), focus of this special publication, is a prolific hydrocarbon region and both exploration and production activity remains high to this day with a positive production outlook. A key element today and in the future is to couple technological developments to improving our understanding of specific geological situations. The theme of the publication reflects the immense efforts made by all industry operators and their academic partners on the NCS to understand in detail the structural setting, sedimentology and stratigraphy of the hydrocarbon bearing units and their source and seal. The papers cover a wide spectrum of depositional environments ranging from alluvial fans to deepwater fans, in almost every climate type from arid through humid to glacial, and in a variety of tectonic settings. Special attention is given to the integration of both analogue studies and process-based models with the insights gained from extensive subsurface datasets.
Book Synopsis Cyclostratigraphy and the Milankovitch Theory by : W. Schwarzacher
Download or read book Cyclostratigraphy and the Milankovitch Theory written by W. Schwarzacher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-08-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclostratigraphy is concerned primarily with measuring geological time and the time units used in this approach are sedimentary cycles. Milankovitch cycles mark time intervals of tens of thousands to several millions of years. Such cycles are the result of variations in the Earth's position in relation to the Sun and these in turn determine the climatic variations. The Milankovitch theory was resurrected in the 1960's when evidence from Pleistocene deep sea sediments linked orbital variations and climate. This monograph discusses sedimentary cycles and their use in measuring geologic time. There is considerable effort made to clarify the term "sedimentary cycle", in particular, the two opposing concepts of cyclic stratification and event stratification. The recognition of sedimentary cycles and of Milankovitch cycles specifically, is considered and care is taken with the question of relating sediment thickness to time. Several examples from the Carboniferous to the Cretaceous are given to show how cyclostratigraphy can be applied to current geological problems. This volume should be of interest to geologists involved with stratigraphical analysis and basin analysis.

Book Synopsis Computerized Modeling of Sedimentary Systems by : Jan Harff
Download or read book Computerized Modeling of Sedimentary Systems written by Jan Harff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computerized modeling is a powerful tool to describe the complex interrelations between measured data and the dynamics of sedimentary systems. Complex interaction of environmental factors with natural variations and increasing anthropogenic intervention is reflected in the sedimentary record at varying scales. The understanding of these processes gives way to the reconstruction of the past and is a key to the prediction of future trends. Especially in cases where observations are limited and/or expensive, computer simulations may substitute for the lack of data. State-of-the-art research work requires a thorough knowledge of processes at the interfaces between atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere, and is therefore an interdisciplinary approach.

Book Synopsis Shelf Sand and Sandstone Bodies by : D. Swift
Download or read book Shelf Sand and Sandstone Bodies written by D. Swift and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade of study of the shallow-marine boundary layer has arrived at a synthesis of sediment dynamic principles that can begin to be transferred from the time scales of the rock record (years to millenia). At the same time, the technology of petroleum exploration has lead to a fundamentally new way of examining the deposits of sedimentary basins. This book applies these insights to continental shelf and continental margin deposits, providing an entirely new viewpoint to the subject.
