Book excerpt: This document is intended to help proponents & managers of dredging & marine engineering projects to design & implement sediment sampling plans that satisfy concerns about the physical & chemical characterization of sediments. The introduction describes the relevance of this guide & the context in which it was written. Chapter 2 introduces the principal objective of sediment characterization studies and discusses factors that may affect the informational value of the samples. The third chapter covers the planning of sampling operations, including development of a specific sampling approach, and explains the main components of a study design. The last chapter describes how to develop a quality assurance & control program. Appendices include statistical formulas for calculating sample size, a table showing numbers of samples required for dredging projects of different sizes, and an alternative approach for evaluating environmental sampling effort based on the use of Bayesian mathematics.

Book Synopsis Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling by : Alena Mudroch
Download or read book Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling written by Alena Mudroch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little attention has been paid to the techniques for aquatic sediment sampling in the scientific literature dealing with environmental issues. With increasing interest in aquatic sediments as a sink source of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, it has been recognized that sediment sampling is a complex and poorly documented discipline. No standardized methods exist to preserve the integrity of sediment and, particularly, sediment pore water, during sampling for different analyses and biological testing for assessment of sediment quality. A practical guide presenting the various methods available would prove extremely valuable. This is that guide. The book begins with a description of the objectives of sediment sampling for different purposes and planning of sampling programs. Most commonly used and readily available samplers and sampling techniques are explained for routine monitoring of sediment contamination and studies of sediment quality. Sample handling, transport, and storage are outlined relevant to the subsequent use of the collected sediments in physico-chemical analysis and biological testing. Measurements and notes of observations in the field during collection of sediments are described. Methods and equipment for collection of sediment pore water are detailed, and the efficiency, cost, and safety involved in sediment sampling are considered. The Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling contains examples, figures, and tables to enhance the reader's understanding of the material and of the importance of choosing proper techniques in sediment sampling programs. For each topic, recent citations are included from specialized literature. The Manual of Aquatic Sediment Sampling contains many examples, figures, and tables which will help the reader to understand the importance of choosing proper techniques in sediment sampling programs, and will provide a guide to preparation and execution of such programs.

Book Synopsis Problems Associated with Dredging Operations on the St. Lawrence by : René Rochon
Download or read book Problems Associated with Dredging Operations on the St. Lawrence written by René Rochon and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific documentation on sediment chemistry and the contamination potential of open-water disposal of dredged material are criticallly reviewed and summarized in this report. Analyses, comparisons and recommendations are made on techniques for possible use in dredging projects. The most important limitations of these techniques are described. Recommendations are made for the establishment of priorities for future research on dredging projects, particularly those on the St. Lawrence River.

Download or read book Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) of Open-water Disposal of Sediment to Support the Management of Dredging Project in the St. Lawrence River written by Gaëlle Triffault-Bouchet and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Lawrence River is subject to various anthropological pressures that can entail negative consequences for the ecosystem. As a result of the third and fourth St. Lawrence Action Plans, the current vision of sustainable management of this river and its main functions emphasizes the need for sound risk-based assessment approaches to support management decisions. More specifically, the sustainable navigation strategy, drawn up under St. Lawrence Action Plan III, explicitly identifies the need to develop sediment quality assessment tools, including those derived from ecotoxicological studies. The first management option addressed in this perspective was the open-water disposal of dredged sediments. In this context, an ecotoxico-logical risk assessment (ERA) approach using chemical characterization in Tier 1 and benthic organisms' toxicity tests in Tier 2 was elaborated based on physicochemical, toxicity testing, and benthic community structure data acquired from sediment samples collected in 59 sites along the St. Lawrence River. Hence this ERA approach will be used to determine whether the risk posed by the exposure of benthic organisms to dredged sediments at deposit sites and downstream is acceptable and compatible with open-water disposal.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes methods recommended for the selection of sampling stations within an environmental study site, and the collection, handling, storage, transportation, and manipulation of samples of whole sediments from marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. Outlines general methods and procedures for two types of undertakings: monitoring and assessment studies, and studies specified in permit requirements for open-water disposal of dredged materials. Included in the general procedures are recommended methods of collection for test, control, and reference sediment, in-situ collection of pore water, sample handling, transportation, storage methods or conditions, and whole-sediment sample preparation for bioaccumulation tests, physicochemical characterisation, and/or toxicity testing. Methods are also recommended for the laboratory collection of pore water and elutriate from field-collected whole-sediment samples. Additional procedures or conditions specific to the various aquatic environments are also addressed.

Book Synopsis Sampling Surface and Subsurface Particle-size Distributions in Wadable Gravel- and Cobble-bed Streams for Analyses in Sediment Transport, Hydraulics, and Streambed Monitoring by : Kristin Bunte
Download or read book Sampling Surface and Subsurface Particle-size Distributions in Wadable Gravel- and Cobble-bed Streams for Analyses in Sediment Transport, Hydraulics, and Streambed Monitoring written by Kristin Bunte and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides guidance for sampling surface and subsurface sediment from wadable gravel-and cobble-bed streams. After a short introduction to streams types and classifications in gravel-bed rivers, the document explains the field and laboratory measurement of particle sizes and the statistical analysis of particle-size distributions. Analysis of particle parameters, including shape, density, and bulk density are also discussed. The document describes the spatial variability of bed-material particle sizes as well as the horizontal and vertical structure of particle deposits. The discussion of sampling procedures and equipment helps the user to make appropriate selections that support the sampling objective. Sample-size estimates may be obtained from empirical data or computed from statistical relationships between sample size and accuracy. The document explains a variety of methods, their usage and prerequisites. A detailed discussion of sampling schemes guides the user to select appropriate spatial sampling patterns necessary to produce representative samples.
