Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journey of sixty-five years old for an African American male in the United States has been a rough and rocky endeavor. A discussion of four major topics of great importance today is critical in explaining the most important factors in the life of Charles Henry Orr. Father-and-Son Relationships help explain how Charles and his father interacted and cared about one another in a time where survival was a challenge. Becoming a man and/or developing into manhood were not a fast process for Charles; some of the reasons will be highlighted in this book. The importance of education came to him slow as well and will be explained. The role of dignity and respect in both of their lives had negative effects relative to their accomplishments in life. Fortunately, Charles is still alive and working on some accomplishments that will contribute to society after he is gone. Soichiro, the founder of Honda, said, To me success can only be achieved through repeated failure and introspection. In fact, success represents 1% of your work that results from the 99% called failure. Charles Orr has lived through many failures in life, but the point here is he has always worked on being successful. Webster defines success as favorable outcomes of desired goals and/or becoming wealthy or famous. Charles has been successful on the desired outcomes of some of his goals, but being wealthy and famous is not included. Drawing from Hornsbys (2004) article titled African Americans in order to put Charless story in a historical perspective, there are thirty-five million black Americans living in the United States, accounting for 12 percent of the total population. They basically came from Western Africa. Without the use of genealogy research, Charles is sure he is in this group.

His poor volitional talents psychologically devastated his daughter to only lose herself in a labyrinth of green wrist and blue floating ladders. Will his constellation of conflicting emotions affect the existence of his own daughter??

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of 2023 Shortlisted for the 2023 Moore Prize The astonishing story of immigrants lured to the United States from India and trapped in forced labor—an "eye-opening" "must-read" told by the visionary labor leader who engineered their escape and set them on a path to citizenship (The New York Times Book Review). In late 2006, Saket Soni, a twenty-eight-year-old Indian-born community organizer, received an anonymous phone call from an Indian migrant worker in Mississippi. He was one of five hundred men trapped in squalid Gulf Coast “man camps,” surrounded by barbed wire, watched by guards, crammed into cold trailers with putrid toilets, forced to eat moldy bread and frozen rice. Recruiters had promised them good jobs and green cards. The men had scraped up $20,000 each for this “opportunity” to rebuild hurricane-wrecked oil rigs, leaving their families in impossible debt. During a series of clandestine meetings, Soni and the workers devised a bold plan. In The Great Escape, Soni traces the workers’ extraordinary escape, their march on foot to Washington, DC, and their twenty-three-day hunger strike to bring attention to their cause. Along the way, ICE agents try to deport the men, company officials work to discredit them, and politicians avert their eyes. But none of this shakes the workers’ determination to win their dignity and keep their promises to their families. Weaving a deeply personal journey with a riveting tale of twenty-first-century forced labor, Soni takes us into the lives of the immigrant workers the United States increasingly relies on to rebuild after climate disasters. The Great Escape is the gripping story of one of the largest human trafficking cases in modern American history—and the workers’ heroic journey for justice.

Book excerpt: Waverley Traylor grew up knowing little about his fathers life or what made him tick. Yet like life itself, time breeds change. After his father was unable to obtain the Purple Heart medal for his service in World War II, Traylor embarked on a fascinating journey to not only prove his fathers qualifications, but also to learn more about his fathers true identity. Legacy of My Father is the result of years of research by Traylor, who visited family and comrades around the nation, extensively read about World War II battles, and sorted through thousands of photographs, newspapers, and letters in order to accurately share his fathers compelling life story. Presented in three distinct periods, this biography describes his fathers childhood growing up in pre- and post-Depression America, where he became a well-adjusted youth with strong Christian values. Later, his father was drafted into the US Marines and sent to fight in one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Corps; Traylor shares heartbreaking details how these events forever changed his fathers post war life. This moving biography shares the intriguing story of a courageous man haunted by war until his last days on Earth and honors the unique relationship he shared only with his son.

Book excerpt: David Yorke retired from an English espionage unit that nobody, except its members, ever knew existed. He was recruited and trained to kill, he became the best there was. This is his story as told to a professional writer. It records the devastating personal damage inflicted on Yorke by his job. He was brought out of retirement and given the option of being loaned to an American government security division. He accepted because he felt this final assignment could provide the justification for his life. He came to possess the antiviral to a newly developed virulent smallpox virus against which there was no known antidote; existing supplies of the traditional antiviral would be ineffective. The antiviral would be the only defense against a secret distribution method of the smallpox virus that could devastate the American Continent. Time was of the essence. The writer woke up: why was the old guy telling him all this so it was recorded? What he had disclosed was potentially more devastating than the 9/11 event, and he wasn't over yet. There was one more chapter to come. The final chapter takes place in Central Park in New York City in early 2002.
