Book excerpt: Routing is a fundamental networking function in every communication system, and multi-hop wireless networks are no exceptions. Attacking the routing service, an adversary can easily paralyse the operation of an entire network. The malicious manipulation of some routing messages results in the dissemination of incorrect routing information which can eventually lead to network malfunction. Even more, intermediate nodes can be corrupted, and thus, exhibit arbitrary behavior. Due to the subtle nature of attacks against routing protocols, informal reasoning about wireless routing security is an error-prone method. In this work, I develop a formal framework in which precise definitions of secure routing can be given, and secure routing protocols proposed for multi-hop wireless networks can be rigorously analysed. I demonstrate the usefulness of this framework in two ways: first, I prove the security of several existing routing protocols. Second, applying the design principles that were identified during the analyses, I propose novel routing protocols for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks and I prove that they are secure in my model.

We usually represent a wireless network as a Unit Disk Graph (UDG) G = ( V, E ) . There are many issues considered in wireless networks. In this dissertation, I mainly focused on the security and routing issues which are two of the most important issues in wireless networks. Security is one of the important issues in wireless networks. Secure clustering problem plays an important role in distributed sensor networks. Weakly Connected Dominating Set (WCDS) is used for solving this problem. Therefore, computing a minimum WCDS becomes an important topic of this research. I compared the size of Maximal Independent Set (MIS) and minimum WCDS in unit disk graph. The analysis showed that five is the least upper bound for this ratio. I also presented a distributed algorithm to produce a weakly connected MIS within a factor 5 from the minimum WCDS. DENIAL-OF-SERVICE (DoS) attack, which aims to make a service unavailable to legitimate clients, is another threat to the internet security. I made a connection between group testing and internet security. Group testing is a technique to detect the defective items with minimum number of tests. It tests the items by group instead of one by one to save the testing times. I used group testing technique to test which server or application is being attacked. Routing is another most important issues in wireless networks. A good routing path can save much energy. Energy consumption is always a big concern in wireless networks. And I approached to the solution of MOC-CDS problem by showing a little weaker result using Generalized Hitting Set.

Malicious hackers are generally individuals from outside of an organization (although users within an organization can be a threat as well). Such hackers may gain access to the wireless network access point by eavesdropping on wireless device communications. Malicious code involves viruses, worms, Trojan horses, logic bombs, or other unwanted software that is designed to damage files or bring down a system. Industrial and foreign espionage involve gathering proprietary data from corporations or intelligence information from governments through eavesdropping. In wireless networks, the espionage threat stems from the relative ease in which eavesdropping can occur on radio transmissions. This chapter provides an overview of wireless networking security technologies most commonly used in an office environment and by the mobile workforce of today.
