Book excerpt: The objective of this text is to develop and implement a model for allocating the industries of the Sectorial Programs of Industrial Development of the Andean Common Market. In the Andean Common Market, as in most other integration schemes among less developed countries, the main expectations regarding the promotion of economic growth are based on the expectation of increased opportunities for import substituting industrialization. The concern here is with the Andean Common Market in particular because it has been the economic integration scheme that has most explicitly recognized the objective of the less developed countries of taking advantage of the new opportunities for industrial ization created by the combination of the individual markets. In the Andean Common Market the importance attached to the expectation of the gains from industrialization was expressed in the formulation of Sectorial Programs of Industrial Development. Other integration schemes among less developed coun tries have not addressed the issue of import substituting industrialization in such detailed manner. In the first section of this chapter the importance of the topic of allocating industries in integration schemes among less developed countries is discussed. It is argued that the benefits to be derived from increased trade in the traditional products of the member countries are minimal. Instead, the member countries 1 2 ALLOCATION OF INDUSTRY IN THE ANDEAN COMMON MARKET expect the benefits from economic integration schemes to be derived from the utilization of the opportunities for industrialization created by such schemes.

Book excerpt: This book provides readers with a timely snapshot of human factors research and methods fostering a better integration of technologies and humans during the whole manufacturing cycle, giving a special emphasis to the quality and safety of the industrial environment for workers, the efficiency of the manufacturing processes itself, the quality of the final product, and its distribution to and use by the customers. It discusses timely issues relating to the automation of the manufacturing processes, and the challenges imposed by the implementation of industry 4.0, additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies. Contributions cover a range of industrial sectors, such as the automotive, health and constructions ones, highlighting both organizational and engineering solutions fostering sustainability, globalization, customization, workers’ well-being and consumers’ satisfaction, among other issues. Based on the AHFE 2021 Conferences on Human Aspects of Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Production Management and Process Control, and Additive Manufacturing, Modeling Systems and 3D Prototyping, held virtually on 25–29 July, 2021, from USA, this book, which merges ergonomic research and technical know-how in the field of manufacturing and product design, addresses a wide range of engineers, designers and professionals, dealing with the integration of technologies and humans in the factories of the future.

Book excerpt: There is a rapidly expanding literature on the economics of the so called 'new technologies' - especially on those using microelectronic systems. Dr. Jacobsson's book deals with microelectronics-based innovation in machine tools: with the production and use of computer numerically controlled machine tools in the world economy and especially in the Third World. Jacobsson is mainly interested in the implications which CNC machine tools may be expected to have for users and producers in the Newly Industrialising Countries. He approaches this as a problem in applied economics and the book will have a primary interest for those economists whose concern is with the problems of industrialisation in developing countries. It will be parti cularly valuable to those who are preoccupied with the role of local capital goods manufacture and with the technological preconditions for this kind of production. Jacobsson is able to give detailed and specific arguments on these matters as far as CNC machine tools are concerned. In my view, the book has a considerably wider interest and relevance than its specification may at first sight suggest. Jacobsson's achieve ment is not just that he has provided valuable and convincing quantita tive arguments about policy in setting up production of CNC machine tools. In addition, he has set a new and much needed methodological standard for analysis of the impacts of 'new technologies' on the international economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the state's role in society has clearly expanded since the 1930s, its independent effect on social structure and change has been given little weight in modern political theories. To bring theory more into line with reality, Stepan proposes a new model of state autonomy which he shows to be particularly well suited for understanding political developments in the Iberian countries and their former Latin-American colonies.
