Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many current approaches to the treatment of psychological problems focus on specific disorders and techniques that are purported to be effective and distinct. Recent advances in knowledge and theory, however, have called into question this approach. The conceptual framework of transdiagnostic, rather than disorder specific, processes is gaining traction. Alongside this has been the call to focus on evidence-based principles rather than evidence-based practices and techniques. The rationale behind this is that many apparently unique and innovative practices are usually the reflection of common underlying principles. This book describes three foundational principles that are key to understanding both the rise and the resolution of psychological distress. Principles-Based Counselling and Psychotherapy promotes a Method of Levels (MOL) approach to counselling and psychotherapy. Using clinical examples and vignettes to help practitioners implement a principles-based approach, this book describes three fundamental principles for effective therapeutic practice and their clinical implications. The first chapter of the book provides a rationale for the principles-based approach. The second chapter describes the three principles of control, conflict, and reorganisation and how they relate to each other from within a robust theory of physical and psychological functioning. The remainder of the book covers important aspects of psychological treatment such as the therapeutic relationship, appointment scheduling, and the change process from the application of these three principles. With important implications for all therapeutic approaches, Principles-Based Counselling and Psychotherapy will be an invaluable resource for psychotherapists, counsellors and clinical psychologists in practice and training. It provides clarity about their role, and a means for providing a resolution to psychological distress and improving the effectiveness of their practice.

Book excerpt: In The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure, Victor Turner examines rituals of the Ndembu in Zambia and develops his now-famous concept of "Communitas." He characterizes it as an absolute inter-human relation beyond any form of structure. The Ritual Process has acquired the status of a small classic since these lectures were first published in 1969. Turner demonstrates how the analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism may be used as a key to understanding social structure and processes. He extends Van Gennep's notion of the "liminal phase" of rites of passage to a more general level, and applies it to gain understanding of a wide range of social phenomena. Once thought to be the "vestigial" organs of social conservatism, rituals are now seen as arenas in which social change may emerge and be absorbed into social practice. As Roger Abrahams writes in his foreword to the revised edition: "Turner argued from specific field data. His special eloquence resided in his ability to lay open a sub-Saharan African system of belief and practice in terms that took the reader beyond the exotic features of the group among whom he carried out his fieldwork, translating his experience into the terms of contemporary Western perceptions. Reflecting Turner's range of intellectual interests, the book emerged as exceptional and eccentric in many ways: yet it achieved its place within the intellectual world because it so successfully synthesized continental theory with the practices of ethnographic reports."

Book excerpt: "Once touted as the single best way to measure students from diverse backgrounds, schools, and experiences, standardized college admissions tests are now criticized for being hopelessly biased in favor of traditionally privileged groups. Out of this has emerged the test-optional movement that seeks to allow students to apply to schools without sitting through the rigors of the SAT. This book takes a step back and applies rigorous empirical measurements to these rival claims. Drawing upon the expertise of higher education researchers, admissions officers, enrollment managers, and policy professionals, this edited volume is among the first to investigate the research and policy implications of test-optional practices. It was conceived in response to the editors' frustration with the fragmented and incomplete state of the literature around the contemporary debate on college admissions testing. Many students, teachers, parents, policymakers--frankly, nearly anyone immediately outside the testing industry and college admissions--have little understanding of how admissions tests are used. This lack of transparency has often fueled beliefs that college assessments are biased, misused, or overused. Decades of research on various aspects of testing, such as the predictive validity of assessments, makes a compelling case for their value. But all-too-frequently researchers and admissions officers talk past one another instead of engaging substantively. This collection intends to remedy the situation by bringing these disparate voices together. This book is designed for provosts, enrollment managers, and college admissions officers seeking to strike the proper balance between uniformity and fairness"--

Book excerpt: Have you ever stopped and realized that a thought that was going through your mind did not seem like your own? Perhaps it seemed far too foreign to ever have originated from you, or perhaps it seemed to detract from a well-formed belief that you have had for ages. Is it possible that you were the victim of dark psychology mind control? Would you like to find out? Dark psychology mind control is any of several techniques that are commonly used by some of the worst abusers out there. People like the sadist, the manipulator, the narcissist, and the sociopath naturally have ways of thinking that are negative, dangerous, and directly threaten your own sanity. These people tend to use techniques that allow them to covertly and secretly implant thoughts into your mind. The worst part is, unless you are trained in noticing, you will likely never find out. That is where Dark Psychology Secrets comes in. If you are sick of the abuse, sick of always wondering where your thoughts came from or if they are even your own, this book is for you. It will help you in learning to understand some of the most potent forms of mind control that exist in real life so you can begin to combat them, preventing them from becoming a serious drain on your life, your relationships, and your happiness. Within this book, you will be guided through learning to understand these dark personality types as dark psychology ultimately comes from how these dark people see the world. You will be walked through recognizing and using some of their darkest methods, and in knowing how they work, you can begin to recognize them as they happen to you if you ever happen to be on the receiving end of the abuse. In reading this book, you will find: - What dark psychology is, as well as a brief history on behaviorism to help understand the process - The dark sides of personality-the narcissist, the Machiavellian, the psychopath, and the sadist, and how they are among the most abusive people you will ever meet - A crash-course in manipulation, how it is used, and why - Information on both the principles of persuasion and rhetoric - How to brainwash someone else or understanding how others have brainwashed you - Recognizing deception and how to deceive other people - Understanding what neuro-linguistic programming is, how it works, and several valuable techniques that utilize it - Using hypnosis, both for nefarious purposes and for good ones - An understanding of the benefits of dark psychology and a debate on the ethics of using such techniques - AND MORE! Do you want to continue to find yourself tossed from feeling to feeling as you interact with other people? You do not have to be controlled by those emotions any longer-in fact, you can take control of them yourself. Ultimately, emotional intelligence and cognitive behavioral therapy are two different methods that are used for emotional regulation-the ability to control the reaction to your emotions that you have instinctively. With the ability to regulate, you are able to avoid screaming at people when you are angry or hurting people when you are frustrated. The skills of emotional regulation are critical if you wish to be successful with other people, and developing these skills can be a bit of a challenge if you do not know where to start. However, Emotional Intelligence & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is here to help. In reading this book, you will find that becoming capable of controlling your emotions does not have to be as difficult as it may sound. Anyone can learn how to control their emotions if they are willing to go through the effort to do so, and if you find that you are willing to, try this book. As you read through it, you will be introduced to both emotional intelligence and cognitive behavioral therapy, two such techniques that help you regulate your emotions. Emotional intelligence promises success if you master the skills within it whereas CBT offers people peace of mind and knowledge of how best to control their own thought processes. Within this book, you will find: ● A working definition of both emotional intelligence and cognitive behavioral therapy ● Why emotional intelligence is so critical and how it directly influences every aspect of life ● The pillars of emotional intelligence and the skills each entails ● Emotional intelligence as it relates to the narcissist ● How CBT took the best of both cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy to create an entirely new school of therapy ● A working guide of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and anger, and how to deal with all of them using CBT-approved methods ● How to develop social skills that will help you thrive in any situation that you find yourself in ● AND MORE! While it may be impossible to believe that you can learn to control emotions after reading a book after a lifetime of being controlled by your emotions, it is true. You can learn to control your emotions by learning to acknowledge them without discrediting them, and learning how the cycle of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors works in practice. You will learn how to overcome those negative feelings in order to stop allowing them to take control of your life. It may be intimidating to think that you can do it, but you can. Book excerpt: Rosalind Brodsky, the alter ego of artist Suzanne Treister, is a delusional time traveller who believes herself to be working at the Institute of Militronics and Advanced Time Interventionality in the twenty-first century. HEXEN 2039 charts Brodsky's scientific research in the development of new mind control technologies through a series of drawings, diagrams and photographs. By turns baroque, challenging, comic, elegant, mysterious and intriguing, these works uncover or construct links between conspiracy theories, occult groups, Chernobyl, witchcraft, the US film industry, British Intelligence agencies, Soviet brainwashing, and behaviour control experiments of the US Army and its Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (PSYOP), in light of alarming new research in contemporary neuroscience. In addition, an essay by Richard Grayson examines Treister's practice in detail. As a whole, this fascinating and complex body of work questions the way we look at history and the future, science, technology, politics, and narrative. A rich and engaging book, HEXEN 2039 is part artist's monograph and part chilling premonition of the future, echoing the world of graphic novels and computer games. The book also includes a 62 x 53 cm poster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOREWORD The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration worldwide by serving the policy and programme needs of governments and migrants. The challenges of migration management reflect the contemporary challenges posed by migration itself, many of which can be turned into opportunities that can benefit countries of origin, countries of d- tination and migrants themselves. To be effectively managed, migration has to be looked at comprehensively, taking into account its economic, social, humanit- ian, demographic, development, security and normative aspects. The normative approach to migration can be viewed mainly from two dif ferent, but complementary angles. Firstly, there are the principles and standards deriving from State sovereignty, among which are the right to protect borders, to confer nationality, to admit and expel foreigners, to combat trafficking and smuggling and to safeguard national security. Secondly, there are the human rights of the persons involved in migration. These two elements constitute the main pillars of what is generally known and accepted today as ‘international migration law’.
